A problem California black bear that gained a nickname and celebrity by stealing meatballs from a Southern California garage freezer will be portrayed on a 2014 Rose Parade float.
The Glendale City Council Tuesday approved an artist's rendering for a city float that depicts a mechanical Meatball the bear popping up and down from a trash can, wearing the lid as a hat.
The float design, called "Let's Be Neighbors," also includes other wildlife, including a skunk and coyote.
The foothill suburb has appropriated $155,000 and is seeking public donations for the city's 100th entry in neighboring Pasadena's Tournament of Roses.
Meatball was tranquilized twice after being found foraging through backyards and returned to the Angeles National Forest, but he kept returning to Glendale. He was captured last year and shipped to a sanctuary in Alpine, where he lives today.
