Disney Has The Stuff of Legend

Disney is developing a mixed live-action/CGI movie called The Stuff of Legend, according to Deadline. Pete Candeland is attached to direct, with Shawn Christensen writing the script.

Based on a graphic novel by Mike Raicht, Brian Smith, and Charles Paul Wilson III, The Stuff of Legend takes place in 1944 when a boy is pulled into his closet by the Boogeyman and is locked up in a magical realm called The Dark. The boy's toys, led by the Colonel, travel to The Dark to save their owner from his kidnapper. The boy's puppy is also in the rescue party as well.

Toys coming to life? Can't help but think of Toy Story. And that bit about the toys going through a closet to a magical land to battle the forces of evil? Totally, The Chronicles of Narnia.

From the sound of things, The Stuff of Legend is geared toward older children, so depending on what's left out of the adaptation, the movie will be rated either PG or PG-13.

Pete Candeland is a seasoned animator, having worked on various TV series, movies, commercials, and music videos. He is also attached to direct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride for Disney.

Shawn Christensen's most notable screenplay is the 2011 action-thriller Abduction which starred Taylor Lautner. The movie received a 4% from Rotten Tomatoes and has under-preformed at the domestic box office, making only $28 million on a budget of $35 million.

The Stuff of Legend sounds expensive so let's see how far it can go until Disney either bring in someone more experienced to shepard this project to the finish line or shelf it all together over "budget concerns."
