Real Estate Office in Tokyo Gets Deep Daylighting Design ? Real ...

Hulic, a real estate company in Tokyo, will have its head office building installed of the new deep daylighting prototype developed by Professor Marilyne Andersen. This daylighting prototype for curtain-wall facades was refined at Andersen?s former lab at MIT and was refined at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) at EPFL. This will be installed on Hulic?s head office building, from floors 5 to 10 and will be formally inaugurated in September 2012.

The so-called Soralux system (?Sora? which means ?sky? in Japanese) is embedded in a double-gazing unit which combines curved reflective louvers for collecting light with acrylic rods and a reflective ceiling, to spread light deep in space.

According to reports, the main challenge in this product is to offer a static and well-integrated solution to up to 12 m deep office illumination using sunlight without risks of glare. The first prototype has been installed on the building?s 6th floor, an area that is specifically designed for the testing of the system.

Tests and measurements were conducted by professor Andersen herself, based on the MSc thesis by Kevin Thuot. The tests were conducted for over a week, to finalize the choice of ceiling finish and also to confirm the effectiveness of the system.
