Melanie Hick: The Best Day of Your Life

In Caitlin Moran's brilliant new book, How To Be a Woman, she says you've got to get over the wedding day being the best of your life. I don't agree. Your wedding day really can be the best day ever. The secret is to forget what all the bridal magazines tell you, and make the day your own.

The first step is to forget everything anyone ever told you a wedding has to be. Chocolate fountain? Fluffy white dress? Stupidly expensive cars? I can't believe I'm saying this in 2011, but you just don't need any of those things to get married and have a great time doing it.

To make your wedding the best day of your life, the key is to whittle through the crap and get to the gem of why you're getting married and what makes you happiest.

What mattered to us was a not spunking all our hard-earned on one day. Close family, London (the city where we met), Australia, a bloody great knees-up, good food and gluten-free cake and of course, each other, were what mattered to us.

Sure, first we went through the whole fantasy malarchy and looked at some expensive, but ultimately inadequate, venues. Then we settled on a combination that was truly us.

Our wedding was a ceremony held in an old building I really liked in Hampstead, London, followed by a party in an east end pub and then another party at my mother's home in Australia later in the year.

I wore the dress my great-great-aunt made for my grandmother, our guest list was limited to the capacity of the room and his mum did the flowers. We chose to get married on a Friday because the venue was half price, that also meant we had the whole weekend for a mini-honeymoon.

The processional music was played by a friend, and our party was DJ'd by other friends. Our friends are awesome. We couldn't afford to cater for everyone we knew, so anyone who fancied celebrating with us was invited to the pub for champagne, cake and dancing after dinner.

One of our few extravagances was a double decker bus to transport our guests from the ceremony to the venue. It was riotous fun -- we drank champagne on board, it got stuck in a narrow London lane-- but it was also practical. Many of our guests were from out of London, and crossing the city was made much more enjoyable done together.

Another worthwhile expense was good photographers who could shoot us news-style during the events. We wanted out photos to document the day as it unfolded, not create some kind of posed fantasy that didn't reflect what actually went on.

To share our invitation and the photos after the event, we set up a website. You can do that pretty easily, just buy a domain and add a Wordpress template that you like.

The brilliant thing about modern weddings is there's so little that you actually have to do. Basically, you have to turn up in a certain place and say something particular to the law of your 'hood. Other than that, you're completely free to make your day completely original and filled with the things that make you happy.

Besides my own, the happiest weddings I have ever been to were filled with the quirks that made those people so ideal for each other in the first place. They weren't the ones jammed with expensive decorations, coordinated everything, fecking chocolate fountains and dry ice.

So when you're getting carried away planning your wedding and you're considering one more extravagance, sit back and think "is that hand-carved marzipan bride and groom sculpture really us?" If it's not, if it's even a little bit not you, step away from the tat and take one step close to the best day of your life.

(AP) ? Cricket legend and opposition politician Imran Khan railed against the government and its alliance with the U.S. before more than 100,000 flag-waving supporters Sunday, establishing himself as a force in Pakistani politics.

Khan, 58, entered politics 15 years ago when he founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or the Movement for Justice Party, but up to now he has struggled to translate his fame into votes. The rally in the eastern city of Lahore indicated his message may have found new resonance at a time when Pakistanis are fed up with the country's chronic insecurity and economic malaise.

"I have come here to register my hatred against this corrupt system," said 29-year-old Nadeem Iqbal, who attended the rally.

A poll conducted by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center in June found Khan, the captain of Pakistan's 1992 world champion cricket team, to be the most popular political figure in the country.

Khan's rising popularity could be a concern for the U.S., given his harsh criticism of the Pakistani government's cooperation with Washington in the fight against Islamist militants.

He has been especially critical of U.S. drone strikes targeting militants in Pakistan's rugged tribal region along the Afghan border. The latest suspected strike killed six alleged militants Sunday.

Khan has argued that Pakistan's alliance with the U.S. is the main reason Pakistan is facing a homegrown Taliban insurgency.

"Our leaders owned this war on terror for the sake of dollars," Khan told the crowd assembled around the country's most important national monument, the Minar-e-Pakistan. "Let me curse you. You sold out the blood of innocent people."

Pakistan's state news agency, The Associated Press of Pakistan, estimated the crowd was over 100,000 people.

Mosharraf Zaidi, a Pakistani political analyst, said the rally was significant because Khan's party has not been able to attract such large crowds in the past.

Despite the strong show of support, it's still unclear how much Khan can shake up the political scene in the next national elections in 2013. His support is largely confined to urban areas of Punjab, Pakistan's largest province, where Lahore is the capital.

Pakistan's main opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-N, has dominated urban areas of Punjab in the recent past. Many analysts, including Zaidi, expect Khan's party to siphon votes away from the PML-N. But given Pakistan's electoral system, that may simply benefit the ruling Pakistan People's Party rather than win seats for Khan's party in parliament.

It's also unclear exactly what Khan would do if he did win significant political power. He has been relentless in criticizing the government for corruption and for its failure to address the many serious problems facing the country. But he has failed to offer many specifics about how he would fix these problems.

"We don't see top-shelf policy people, top-shelf professionals becoming part of the policy machine at PTI," said Zaidi. "What we see is a lot of rhetoric."

The suspected U.S. missile strike Sunday targeted a vehicle in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, said Pakistani intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The U.S. refuses to acknowledge the CIA-run drone program in Pakistan, but officials have said privately that the attacks have killed many senior Taliban and al-Qaida commanders.

Pakistani officials often criticize the attacks as violations of the country's sovereignty, but the government is widely believed to support the strikes in private. They are extremely unpopular among ordinary people who believe they mainly kill innocent civilians.

Getting your home ready for the big chill

Winter wonderlands are cute and all, but they get pretty cold too.

By Zillow

While September brings the first day of fall, October can be the harbinger of the winter and all of its frigid pitfalls. It's best to be prepared for the frost and snow with a few simple tasks that will prevent drafts, frosty windows and every homeowner's nightmare: Busted pipes.

A good place to start prior to tackling problem areas in your home is a home energy audit. This will pinpoint specific places in your house where heat escapes. The U.S. Department of Energy has a do-it-yourself energy assessment, or you can hire someone to do the audit for you.

Weatherstripping

Cold air can seep in through those little gaps between your door and the door frame, quickly reversing any effort you take to heat your home. Weatherstripping covers the sides and top of the door and a sweep fills the space between the threshold and door bottom. Hardware stores and home centers sell numerous products in metal, foam, rubber and plastic for this purpose and many can be installed in an afternoon.

Windows
This may be another area where additional weatherstripping or caulk is needed to fill any visible gaps, though that still might not be enough remediation to prevent drafts. While windows add much needed winter light, they can let out a lot of heat ? up to 12 times more than a wall if they're single pane. Blinds can keep a little heat in, but heavier shades or curtains will minimize heat loss.

Fireplace
Fantasizing about a cozy evening in front of the fire? Your romantic night might be cut short if your fireplace hasn't been serviced. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys are swept at least once a year.

Furnace
It's also recommended that furnaces be serviced once a year. A heating system can break down at the most inopportune time is it's not serviced. Worse, it can pump carbon monoxide into a home or eventually stop working. While a furnace service can run up to $100, the cost benefits are undeniable, considering the cost of a major fix or replacement.

Ducts
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home with central heating can lose between 10 and 30 percent of its heated air before that air reaches the vents if duct work is not well-connected and insulated, or if it must travel through unheated spaces.

Pipes
Frozen pipes are a royal nuisance, but with a little effort, many instances can be prevented. The best way to tackle these is to wrap pipes that run the exterior of the home with heating tape. Turn off the water and drain the remaining water at the inside valves. You can also purchase insulated covers for additional prevention.

Stevie Wonder to ring in '12 in Vegas

Music legend Stevie Wonder plans to headline in Sin City on New Year's Eve, playing to a ballroom crowd at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and to thousands of revelers on the Las Vegas Strip by video.

Casino officials told The Associated Press the 25-time Grammy winner known for top hits including "Superstition" and "You are the Sunshine of My Life" will be its top performer one year after an exclusive grand opening bash that featured Jay-Z and Coldplay.

This year's party is slightly more accessible than last year's invite-only affair ? a limited number of tickets start at $250 and include an open bar.

The New Year's Eve show caps a year of entertainment at the Cosmopolitan that featured top acts including Adele, the Flaming Lips and Deadmau5.

Wonder's concert will stream to partiers on the Las Vegas Strip, which will shut down to vehicle traffic and fill up with tourists.

Lisa Marchese, the Cosmopolitan's chief marketing officer, said Wonder has proven over several decades of performing he can appeal to audiences young and old.

In June, the former child prodigy was honored at the Apollo in New York with induction into the Legends Hall of Fame, joining Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald.

But Wonder, who has seven Billboard No. 1 singles, got top billing in September at the Austin City Limits music festival, which featured dozens of acts including Coldplay, Kanye West and Arcade Fire.

"He's gotten cool again in a whole different way with a young group of people who didn't grow up with his music," Marchese said. "He's legendary, he's an impresario, he's contemporary but old school in this really unexpected way."

Marchese said other acts and surprises would likely be added to the show, and other acts will perform throughout the property, including Mayer Hawthorne at a lounge on the casino floor.

(AP) ? Simon Cowell doesn't use Twitter but he wants "X Factor" fans to use the site to vote for their favorite contestants.

The Fox show announced Tuesday that beginning Nov. 2, fans can cast a ballot by sending a direct message over Twitter to the official "X Factor" account. Viewers can also cast a ballot on the show's Facebook page and its official website.

"It's a sign of the times," said Cowell, who believes more votes will come in as a result of expanding the process.

"Sites like Twitter and Facebook give (the audience) a much bigger voice."

Aside from social media, votes can be sent the old fashioned way, by making a phone call or sending a text message and by using a special App created for Verizon Android devices.

Cowell uses the Internet to gauge what people think of the series so far. He goes online during and after the show to see what people are saying and plans to join Twitter once he learns "how to type quicker."

The show is averaging about 12.5 million viewers an episode, but one thing that's hindered it in recent weeks is the Major League Baseball World Series. Games on Fox have pre-empted the show leading to confusion among viewers and causing some DVRs to not record "X Factor."

Cowell says the conflict has been frustrating but they "knew in advance this was going to happen." He believes the ratings have been consistent so far and word of mouth will get people to tune in.

On Tuesday's first live show, five acts were cut leaving 12 remaining contestants. With the competition heating up, so has the tension among its judges, who are each mentoring a class of contestants. Cowell has the girls. LA Reid is mentoring the boys. Paula Abdul is helping the groups and Nicole Scherzinger has the solo acts over 30-years-old.

Cowell says Abdul claims to have the hardest category to mentor, but disagrees with her. He mentored the groups in the U.K. version of the show and "loved doing it."

"Right now each judge has someone in their category who could win the show," he said. "But if I had to bet on it, I'd back me."

Studio pulling Harry Potter discs from stores December 29 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Warner Brothers is taking a page from Disney.

The studio announced that it will pull all Harry Potter DVDs and Blu-rays from store shelves on December 29, 2011.

Move follows the November 11 home entertainment release of the final film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which should send disc sales into the stratosphere. The studio is also releasing a box-set of all eight Potter films on that date.

Disney has employed a similar strategy with animated hits like "Beauty and the Beast" and "Sleeping Beauty," re-releasing the movies in theaters and on tricked out versions for limited periods of time.

If the runaway success of the 3D re-release of "The Lion King" is any guide, fans can expect Potter to wave his wand in theaters at some point in the future.

Warner Brothers says the new moratorium will not apply to digital copies or video-on-demand.

HBT: Seven walks by Jackson? That's nothing

Edwin Jackson walked seven batters last night before being pulled from Game 4 in the sixth inning, marking the third time in his career the 28-year-old right-hander has issued seven or more walks in a game. And one of those three was a no-hitter.

It was the first time a pitcher had walked seven batters in a World Series game since Livan Hernandez in 1997 and also got me curious about which pitchers have the most seven-walk starts in baseball history.

In retrospect, I should have known the answer before looking it up. After all he was sitting in the stands, next to George W. Bush, watching Jackson?s walk-fest last night.

Via the magic of Baseball-Reference.com:

STARTS WITH 7+ WALKS Nolan Ryan 71 Bob Feller 44 Tommy Byrne 37 Bob Turley 32 Bobo Newsom 32

Amazing. Nolan Ryan walked seven or more batters 71 times, which is 61 percent more than any other pitcher in the history of baseball. Also of note is that Ryan had just 27 career starts in which he walked zero batters. My favorite Ryan pitching line might be this one. Seriously, it?s insane. I estimate his pitch count in that game at 1,572.

During the past 20 seasons Randy Johnson has the most seven-plus-walk starts with 12, followed by Oliver Perez, Darryl Kile, and Wilson Alvarez with nine apiece.

Yahoo's 3Q shows company remains in financial funk

Yahoo's third-quarter results showed little evidence of ending the financial funk that got former CEO Carol Bartz fired last month.

The performance, announced Tuesday, may increase the pressure on Yahoo Inc. to sell itself in parts or as a whole.

Yahoo earned $293 million, or 23 cents per share, in the July-September period. That represented a 26 percent decline from net income of $396 million, or 29 cents per share, at the same time last year.

The numbers for both this year and last year were boosted by one-time gains. After adjusting for those items, Yahoo said it would have earned 21 cents per share in the latest quarter versus 16 cents per share last year.

The earnings exceeded the average estimate of 17 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

But Yahoo's revenue is still eroding at a time when the Internet advertising market is growing. That's a sign of the challenges facing Yahoo as it falls further behind Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc. and Facebook, the Internet's most popular hangout.

Revenue fell 24 percent from the same time last year to $1.22 billion.

After subtracting ad commissions, Yahoo's revenue stood at $1.07 billion. That was a 5 percent drop from the same time last year.

The revenue slump will extend into the final three months of the year ? typically the busiest time for online advertising because it coincides with the holiday shopping season.

Yahoo's fourth-quarter forecast calls for net revenue to range from $1.12 billion to $1.24 billion. If Yahoo hits the middle of that target, its fourth-quarter revenue will be down by about 6 percent from last year.

Normally, Yahoo's stock falls after a lackluster quarterly report or a cautious outlook pronouncement. But that didn't happen on Tuesday, partly because many investors have been betting that Yahoo's financial mediocrity will increase the likelihood that the company will decide to sell itself.

Yahoo shares gained 53 cents, or more than 3 percent, to $16 in Tuesday's extended trading.

Tim Morse, Yahoo's interim CEO, declined to address the takeover speculation in a brief interview Tuesday with The Associated Press.

Archaeologists find blade 'production lines' existed as much as 400,000 years ago

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2011) ?

Archaeology has long associated advanced blade production with the Upper Palaeolithic period, about 30,000-40,000 years ago, linked with the emergence of Homo Sapiens and cultural features such as cave art. Now researchers at Tel Aviv University have uncovered evidence which shows that "modern" blade production was also an element of Amudian industry during the late Lower Paleolithic period, 200,000-400,000 years ago as part of the Acheulo-Yabrudian cultural complex, a geographically limited group of hominins who lived in modern-day Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

Prof. Avi Gopher, Dr. Ran Barkai and Dr. Ron Shimelmitz of TAU's Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations say that large numbers of long, slender cutting tools were discovered at Qesem Cave, located outside of Tel Aviv, Israel. This discovery challenges the notion that blade production is exclusively linked with recent modern humans.

The blades, which were described recently in the Journal of Human Evolution, are the product of a well planned "production line," says Dr. Barkai. Every element of the blades, from the choice of raw material to the production method itself, points to a sophisticated tool production system to rival the blade technology used hundreds of thousands of years later.

An innovative product

Though blades have been found in earlier archaeological sites in Africa, Dr. Barkai and Prof. Gopher say that the blades found in Qesem Cave distinguish themselves through the sophistication of the technology used for manufacturing and mass production.

Evidence suggests that the process began with the careful selection of raw materials. The hominins collected raw material from the surface or quarried it from underground, seeking specific pieces of flint that would best fit their blade making technology, explains Dr. Barkai. With the right blocks of material, they were able to use a systematic and efficient method to produce the desired blades, which involved powerful and controlled blows that took into account the mechanics of stone fracture. Most of the blades of were made to have one sharp cutting edge and one naturally dull edge so it could be easily gripped in a human hand.

This is perhaps the first time that such technology was standardized, notes Prof. Gopher, who points out that the blades were produced with relatively small amounts of waste materials. This systematic industry enabled the inhabitants of the cave to produce tools, normally considered costly in raw material and time, with relative ease.

Thousands of these blades have been discovered at the site. "Because they could be produced so efficiently, they were almost used as expendable items," he says.

Prof. Cristina Lemorini from Sapienza University of Rome conducted a closer analysis of markings on the blades under a microscope and conducted a series of experiments determining that the tools were primarily used for butchering.

Modern tools a part of modern behaviors

According to the researchers, this innovative industry and technology is one of a score of new behaviors exhibited by the inhabitants of Qesem Cave. "There is clear evidence of daily and habitual use of fire, which is news to archaeologists," says Dr. Barkai. Previously, it was unknown if the Amudian culture made use of fire, and to what extent. There is also evidence of a division of space within the cave, he notes. The cave inhabitants used each space in a regular manner, conducting specific tasks in predetermined places. Hunted prey, for instance, was taken to an appointed area to be butchered, barbequed and later shared within the group, while the animal hide was processed elsewhere.

(AP) ? An afterthought in early September, the St. Louis Cardinals are taking their wild ride all the way to the World Series.

David Freese hit a three-run homer in the first and manager Tony La Russa turned again to his brilliant bullpen for seven sturdy innings as St. Louis captured its 18th pennant with a 12-6 victory over the bumbling Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday night.

Albert Pujols and the wild-card Cardinals took out the heavily favored Phillies in the first round, then dispatched the division-rival Brewers on their own turf in Game 6 of the NL championship series.

Looking for its second title in six seasons, St. Louis opens the World Series at home Wednesday night with ace Chris Carpenter on the mound against the AL champion Texas Rangers.

"I mean, you could have never known," Pujols said.

Trailing by 10? games in the wild-card race on Aug. 25, the Cardinals surged down the stretch and took advantage of a monumental collapse by Atlanta to win a playoff spot on the final night of the regular season.

Now, bolstered by a group of no-name relievers who keep answering La Russa's call, the Cardinals are back in the World Series for the first time since beating Detroit in 2006.

What a relief!

"Well, it was crazy," outfielder Matt Holliday said. "We had a lot of adversity, but we found a way."

It was a disappointing end to a scintillating season for Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and the NL Central champion Brewers, who finished with a franchise-record 96 wins, six games ahead of St. Louis.

Baseball's best home team collapsed in the NLCS, though, losing twice at Miller Park in an error-filled flop. It was likely Fielder's final game with the Brewers, too. He can become a free agent after the season.

Rafael Furcal and Pujols hit solo homers off Chris Narveson and St. Louis built a 9-4 lead by the time the bullpen took over for Edwin Jackson in the third inning.

The group of Fernando Salas, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, Lance Lynn and Jason Motte allowed two runs the rest of the way. For the series, St. Louis relievers finished 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over 28 2-3 innings.

The biggest scare came when Pujols appeared shaken up after tagging out Braun in the fifth inning when he fell hard on his right forearm on a close play at first base. The three-time MVP was slow to get up, but stayed in the game.

St. Louis went 15-5 over the final 20 games to clinch a playoff spot on the final day of the regular season. The Cardinals needed Carpenter to throw a shutout to beat the Phillies 1-0 in Game 5 of the NLDS, but took control of this series beginning in Game 2 by jumping out to early leads and letting their bullpen lead the way.

La Russa called on his relievers 28 times in the NLCS and Jackson's start was the shortest of the postseason for the Cardinals rotation, which finished the NLCS with a 7.66 ERA. St. Louis became the first team to win a postseason series without a starter reaching the sixth inning, according to STATS LLC.

Picked as the NLCS MVP, Freese gave others credit.

"I wish we could make eight or nine of these and give them to our bullpen. They're the reason why we won this series," he said.

Corey Hart, Rickie Weeks and Jonathan Lucroy all homered for the Brewers, who won a major league-most 57 times at Miller Park this season and four straight in the postseason before losing Game 2 to the Cardinals.

It was the two ugly defensive performances that will likely linger for Milwaukee, which committed four errors in a 7-1 loss in Game 5 and added three more in Game 6.

"You can't get away with mistakes to them and we made way too many mistakes," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.

The Brewers' biggest hitters ? Braun, Fielder and Weeks ? finished 1 for 12. Fielder, the All-Star game MVP and the reason St. Louis will start at home on Wednesday, received a standing ovation in his final at-bat in the eighth. He grounded out and slowly walked back to the dugout with his head down.

Struggling starter Shaun Marcum never really gave Milwaukee a chance and was hurt by defensive plays that weren't ruled errors.

In the first, Jon Jay singled with one out and stole second when Weeks couldn't hold onto Lucroy's throw. Marcum believed he had strike three on Pujols, who ended up walking.

Lance Berkman singled for the second time in 18 career at-bats against Marcum to drive in the first run, and center fielder Nyjer Morgan made an ill-advised throw to third, with Pujols moving from first to third, that let Berkman advance.

Marcum saved a run by grabbing Matt Holliday's grounder and flipping it out of his glove to Lucroy to get Pujols at the plate, but Freese homered on the next pitch to make it 4-0 and extend his postseason hitting streak to 10 games.

Marcum finished the first, ending his postseason 0-3 with a 14.90 ERA.

Furcal homered off Chris Narveson with two outs in the second and Pujols followed with a drive to left field to give St. Louis a 6-4 lead.

Holliday then singled, Freese doubled and the Brewers intentionally walked Yadier Molina with one out. Nick Punto hit a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter Allen Craig singled in two more runs off LaTroy Hawkins to make it 9-4.

Yuniesky Betancourt's RBI double in the fourth cut the lead to 9-5, but Milwaukee fell apart in the fifth with three errors in a span of two plays.

First, Hart bobbled Freese's single in right field, allowing Holliday to reach third.

Holliday scored on the next play when third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr. committed two errors. First, he booted Molina's grounder and then flipped the ball out of his glove through Weeks' legs at second.

Pinch-hitter Adron Chambers' sacrifice fly gave St. Louis an 11-5 lead in the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Braun's groundout cut the lead to 11-6, but the focus was on Pujols when he was slow to get up.

La Russa came out to check on his star, who gripped his right forearm and had a brief limp, but stayed in the game. He looked better, contributing a two-out RBI single in the eighth for the final margin.

Jackson allowed Hart and Weeks to lead off the first two innings with homers and Lucroy added a two-run shot to cut the lead to 5-4 after the second. St. Louis answered back with four more runs, keyed when Jackson was pulled for Craig, who delivered the two-run single.

Salas caught a break in the third when Jay made a leaping catch of Fielder's drive at the wall in right-center. Jay added another spectacular grab, crashing into the padding in the ninth with Motte on the mound.

One out later, the celebration was on.

NOTES: St. Louis joins the Dodgers and Giants with 18 World Series appearances, second only to the Yankees (40). ... It was Milwaukee's 26th loss at Miller Park this season. Marcum started 13 of those games. ... Furcal has six of his nine homers this season off the Brewers. ... Marcum gave up 34 runs over his final 34 innings dating to Sept. 9. ... The Brewers had clubhouse attendant Alex Sanchez dressed as the giant blue cartoon monster James Sullivan from the 2001 movie Monsters, Inc. throw out the first pitch. ... The Miller Park roof was closed with the gametime temperature 55 degrees and a strong autumn wind blowing throughout the day. Inside, it was 67 degrees.

Gilad Shalit freedom marks a milestone. Now lift the Gaza blockade, says Hamas.

Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier was freed today after being held for more than five years in Gaza. Some 477 Palestinian prisoners were released at the same time.

Israel and Hamas carried out an unprecedented prisoner swap on Tuesday, freeing Israeli Sgt. Gilad Shalit after five years in captivity as some 477 Palestinian prisoners were released to the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Egypt.

The dramatic exchange, which kept Israelis and Palestinians on edge until the final moment of the swap, marks a milestone in the relations between the two sworn enemies.

Sergeant Shalit?s abduction prompted Israel to tighten its blockade on the Gaza Strip, and his release removes a bone of contention that destabilized the volatile border.

Looking emaciated, exhausted, and wearing a black baseball cap, Shalit emerged from imprisonment at the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing. He was accompanied the chief of Hamas?s military wing, Ahmed Jaberi, according to Israeli state-run television's Channel 1.

He was later handed over to Israeli military representatives and crossed back to Israel at the Kerem Shalom crossing, located at the intersection of Israel, Egypt, and the Gaza Strip. He later flew by helicopter to the Tel Nof military base where he was reunited with his family.

"Gilad Shalit has returned home more than five years after the mission he embarked on," said Israel's chief army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, adding that Shalit is in his health good.

"I?m moved,?? he told Egyptian television, his voice faltering in an interview before returning to Israel. "I hope the deal with advance peace and there won?t be clashes between Israelis and the Palestinians."

Bank of America earns $6.2B on accounting gains

(AP) ? Bank of America earned $6.2 billion in the third quarter, following a big loss in the same period a year ago. The earnings mostly came from accounting gains and the sale of a stake in a Chinese bank.

Revenue and income from almost all of its businesses fell, including credit cards, real estate, investment banking and trading.

The Charlotte, N.C. bank earned 56 cents per share, following a loss of $7.3 billion, or 77 cents a share in the same quarter last year. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast the bank would earn 28 cents per share.

Bank of America Corp.'s stock rose 2.8 percent to $6.19 in pre-market trading Tuesday.

The income included accounting gains of $4.5 billion and $1.7 billion, both related to drops in the value of its debt. Bank of America gained $3.6 billion from selling its stake in China Construction Bank and recorded a loss in its private equity business of $2.2 billion as the value of its investments fell.

The sale of its stake in the Chinese bank was part of CEO Brian Moynihan's effort to focus the company and shed non-core businesses. The bank also announced 30,000 job cuts in the quarter as part of an initiative to reduce expenses. Its goal is to reduce expenses by $5 billion a year in the next three years.

Moynihan said in a statement that his mission is to transform Bank of America into a "leaner, more focused company."

The third quarter results were hurt by declines in investment banking and trading from its Merrill Lynch division, which has been an income generator in previous quarters. Turbulent financial markets in the third quarter, brought on by the debt crisis in Europe and a downgrade of the U.S. government's credit rating, kept many investors away and led companies to put off stock and bond offerings.

Bank of America's investment banking and trading business reported a net loss of $302 million, compared to net income of $1.5 billion in the year-ago quarter. Revenue declined 26 percent to $5.2 billion. Fixed income, currency and commodity sales fell by $3.2 billion, while equity trading declined by $201 million. Investment banking fees fell 21 percent to $1.1 billion.

Bank of America's results are considered a proxy for the health of the U.S. consumer because the bank serves about half of all American households. The consumer business results showed that Americans were still holding back spending and demand for loans was low.

The bank's consumer real estate business reported a loss of $1.1 billion, while revenue declined 22 percent to $2.8 billion. The bank said it wrote fewer real estate loans due to lower demand.

One of the largest credit card issuers, Bank of America's revenue from the division dropped 16 percent to $4.5 billion. Customers used less credit than last year, leading to lower income for the bank.

The bank set aside less money for losses as more Americans got their financial houses in order and paid their bills on time. Bank of America's provision for losses from credit cards decreased $2 billion from a year ago to $1 billion.

Maximum PC | Can You Build A 2560 x 1600 Gaming Rig Without ...

It's easy to build a gaming machine on a budget if you're playing at 1650x1080 or 1920x1200, but if you're rocking 2560x1600, you need a little more oomph

As Maximum PC senior editor Gordon Mah Ung puts it, building a budget gaming rig for a 30-inch panel is the metaphorical equivalent of slapping a Ferrari engine into a crappy Ford car. If you can afford a display that rings up north of $2,000, then why the heck are you trying to cut corners on the system you?re connecting it to?

I can?t answer that one for you. But what I can tell you is exactly how you can go about getting the best frame rate for your buck without purchasing a PC that?s more expensive than your mega-monitor. That?s my task for this build-it: killer gaming performance without needless budgetary destruction. And as you might expect, picking the perfect graphics card for the mix is the biggest challenge of this build.

So in the interest of fairness, I selected two videocard setups that I put to the test in this build: the best of Nvidia?s dual-GPU monstrosities, and two high-end ATI cards in a CrossFire setup. Compared to what these cards can do, everything else on this PC is practically window dressing.

Choosing the Right Hardware

As far as top-notch processors go, Intel?s Sandy Bridge architecture is a no-brainer for my killer system build. I?ve opted for the 3.3GHz 2500K instead of its 2600K cousin because it?s less expensive and is easy to overclock up to the 2600K?s 3.4GHz, and I don?t feel that the addition of Hyper-Threading is going to make that much of a difference to gaming frame rates. To keep the system speedy (and load times low), Intel?s Z68 platform and its integrated Smart Response Technology allow me to use an SSD as an expanded read/write cache for a standard hard drive. What little benefit in speeds I?d see by jumping from a Western Digital Caviar Blue to a Caviar Black drive is eclipsed by the SSD cache?s performance.

And now for the elephant in the room: the videocards. The point of this system build is to present an affordable PC that can dish out top-notch gaming on a 30-inch panel. That?s why I?m not just taking the easy route and slapping in two Nvidia GTX 590 cards or two ATI Radeon HD 6990 cards in a paired configuration and calling it a day (don?t do the math; the cost of these cards hurts.)

Maximum PC recommending a CrossFire scenario instead of a single-card setup? What is this world coming to?

As for my ultimate decision to go with two ATI Radeon HD 6970 cards in a CrossFire configuration instead of a single, dual-GPU Nvidia GTX 590, I?ll let the benchmarks (see page 2)?and the price points?speak for themselves. Simply put, I found that I could achieve similar or even better performance (depending on the game) from a comparably priced CrossFire setup than with Nvidia?s single-card solution.

From benchmark tests of Batman: Arkham Asylum, to Dirt 3, to Metro 2033, to an ever-punishing trip through Crysis 2, my CrossFire setup consistently spanked Nvidia?s GTX 590. Now, I realize that my selection flies in the face of the advice that Maximum PC has been giving you since videocards were invented?namely, that you should always purchase the fastest single-card solution you can get under the presumption that you?ll later be able to bolster your setup with a wicked-fast SLI or CrossFire setup, if you so desire.

But with the price of these extreme videocards shooting up into the $700 range, I think we can take that suggestion and throw it out the window. If you can afford $1,400 worth of videocards, you?re reading the wrong article. For the best out-of-box solution that can make your games scream on a 30-inch display without breaking your bank account, you can?t go wrong with dual ATI Radeon HD 6970s.

Long before Lisa Irwin vanished from her Kansas City home, there was another desperate search in Missouri for a little girl. Her name was Elizabeth Gill. On the afternoon of June 13, 1965, Elizabeth was in her family's front yard in Cape Giradreau. It was the last time the 2-year-old was seen alive.

Scott Kleeschulte also disappeared in Missouri. On June 18, 1988, the 9-year-old freckled face boy was walking down a street in St. Charles County. To this day, nobody knows what happened to him.

The three cases, separated by decades, share a common bond with thousands of other files accessible to the public on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System website.

Known as NamUs, the vast national registry lets relatives, law enforcement, victim's rights advocates, and anyone scan the records and search for information that could help solve these heartbreaking mysteries.

NamUs, which is run by the National Forensic Science Technology Center, is under the direction of the National Institute of Justice.

Story: $100,000 reward in Lisa Irwin disappearance

?We know that NamUs could really be the key to making a difference in the lives of families that have been waiting and waiting to find missing loved ones,? said Kristina Rose, deputy director of the National Institute of Justice

There are more than 8,800 total missing persons cases on NamUs, of which 75 percent remain open, including one that goes back to the Great Depression.

'Really cold cases'
Joseph Lawrence Halpern was 22 on Aug. 14, 1933. That was the day he disappeared while hiking in Colorado?s Rocky Mountain National Park. The NamUs website indicates Halpern was wearing a light blue shirt, brown trousers and was carrying an army backpack.

?Many are really cold cases,? Rose told NBC News, ?but the more people you have looking at them and make the connection and build bridges to share information, the chances become much higher in solving those cases.?

There are many familiar names in the NamUs system, names like Lauren Spierer, the Indiana University student who vanished last June. The case of Etan Patz, who was the first missing child to appear on a milk box, is also detailed in the database.

?Etan was last seen at 8:00 a.m. at Prince and Wooster Streets going to the school bus stop,? the NamUs information indicated. ?He was wearing a black cap, a blue corduroy jacket, blue pants, blue sneakers, and carrying a blue bag with elephants on it.?

NamUs said it has helped solve 62 missing and unidentified person cases, including that of Paula Davis.

Video: Home videos released of missing baby Lisa (on this page)

?She went missing in 1987 out of Kansas City, Missouri and 14 hours later a body was found in Ohio,? Rose said.

In 2009, after watching a public service announcement for NamUs, Davis? sister searched the database and ultimately determined that the body discovered in Ohio was that of Paula Davis.

NamUs gave her an answer. But many other families are still waiting for one, including that of Jamie Peterson.

The 30-year-old Pittsburgh mother was home Sept. 26 when her children went to school. When they returned in the afternoon, Peterson was gone.

Her file, #12519, was entered into NamUs last week.

?I think there?s always hope,? Rose said, ?and that?s what NamUs does, it gives people hope that these cases will be solved.?

Paper shows Japan feared aftershocks at nuke plant (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan feared aftershocks could further damage one of the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear plant's fuel pools and cause spent fuel rods to melt and spew radiation within hours.

The Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization says its simulation showed some 1,500 mostly used fuel rods at the plant's No. 4 reactor building could start breaking in two hours if aftershocks further damaged the pool and caused cooling water to escape. The fuel rods could start melting within eight hours, the organization said in a paper dated June and released late Friday.

The March quake and tsunami triggered meltdowns at the plant's reactors. Explosions also damaged buildings, including Unit 4. Its operator has since reinforced Unit 4's spent fuel pool to increase quake resistance.
