HTC debuts One brand at MWC 2012, unifies Android device lineup

Shearing clippers, meet HTC's Android device portfolio. It appears UK head Phil Roberson wasn't just blowing the proverbial smoke this past January when he stated intentions to tighten up the manufacturer's portfolio with fewer releases focused on "amazing hardware" experiences. At today's MWC keynote the company announced an initiative that'll quite literally institute a One product line to rule them all ethos. Functioning much like Samsung's Galaxy series does, all smartphones and tablets that fall under the 'One' brand umbrella will showcase an attention to three distinct areas of detail: top-notch imaging, integrated Beats audio and industrial design. And, unlike the divisive monikers that often results from heavy-handed carrier intervention, the 130 operators already on board for the OEM's newborn products will retain that streamlined naming convention. No word yet on whether the outfit intends to group its Windows Phone array under this same tree or if that'll warrant an entirely new family itself.

Telephone conferencing as the fast food approach to Communications

In the modern business world, standard meetings are sometimes less structured events as they are emergency necessities. In a fast-paced field, the need to get parties together quickly to iron out pieces of a deal may require telephone conferencing in order to successfully reach an agreement. Or, portions of a complicated project may require minute adjustments in a short timeframe, which requires some communication between participants who are remotely stationed.telephone conferencing

Teleconferencing?as come to the rescue to make a quick and dirty virtual meeting a reality for such situations.

Telephone conferencing can bring people together from across the globe on a dime, or very quickly compared to the logistics of the traditional staff or organization meeting. For this reason, some call it the ?fast food? of modern business communication. This type of business connectivity can be as formal or informal as the case requires, and not all participants need to be engaged equally in the proceedings. If an executive who?s vacationing on the golf course has to be contacted, for example, that party?s ?attendance? on the call may be limited to certain items requiring approval or verification by the officer, who can then get off the call and back to putting.

The flexibility of the format, in other words, can eliminate the necessity for physical contact in most cases, and in an emergency, the necessity of all the arrangements that go with in person settings.

There is no costly meeting space, video presentations, handout materials, etc. have to be introduced in order to hold productive calls via telephone conferencing. Such extras are probably a hindrance in the case of an emergency conference, because it may bog down the pace of home it to solve the direct issue we discussed.

This kind of communication works for both internal relations and external, goodwill sessions with suppliers, consumers, and peers in the industry. The fact that one of its great advantages is the speed with which it can be created, some online based companies have opted to utilize telephone conferencing as its main mode of regular staff communication. In light of the rise in complexity and pace with which organizations must make decisions, conference calls might be the ?fast food? method of connecting for many more companies in the near future.

This post is written by our guest author,?Michael, on the behalf of?Powwownow. Powwownow is one of the UK?s leading conference call, telephone conferencing,?teleconferencing provider.

(AP) ? The president just couldn't say no: Mick Jagger held out a microphone almost by way of command, and soon Barack Obama was belting out the blues with the best of them.

The East Room of the White House was transformed into an intimate blues club on Tuesday night for a concert featuring blues all-stars of the past, present and future ? and the president himself.

The surprise performance by Obama came at the end of the playlist when the blues ensemble was singing "Sweet Home Chicago," the blues anthem of Obama's home town.

Buddy Guy prodded the president, saying he'd heard that the president sang part of an Al Green tune recently, and adding, "You gotta keep it up."

Then Jagger handed over the mic, and Obama seemed compelled to comply.

"Come on, baby don't you want to go," the president sang out twice, handing off the mic to B.B. King momentarily, and then taking it back to tack on "Sweet Home Chicago" at the end.

That was how Obama ended the night.

This was how he began it: Obama said sometimes there are downsides to being the president. You can't just go for a walk, for example.

And then there are the times that more than make up for all those frustrations, he said, like Tuesday night, when Jagger, King, Jeff Beck and other musical giants came by the house to sing the blues.

"I guess things even out a little bit," Obama joked at the start of a rollicking East Room concert that was electrified by Jagger and the rest.

"This music speaks to something universal," Obama declared. "No one goes through life without both joy and pain, triumph and sorrow. The blues gets all of that, sometimes with just one lyric or one note. "

King, 86, arrived in a wheelchair but rose tall to kick off the night with a raucous "Let the Good Times Roll," quickly joined by other members of the ensemble. And he followed with "The Thrill is Gone."

From there, Obama and his wife, Michelle, were swaying in their seats and singing along to an all-hits playlist including "St. James Infirmary" and "Let Me Love You."

Beck slowed things down with an instrumental "Brush With the Blues," as anticipation built for the arrival of Jagger, who did not disappoint.

The longtime Rolling Stones frontman delivered on "I Can't Turn You Loose" and then teamed up with Beck on "Commit a Crime." Jagger got the president and his wife up out of their seats, swaying and clapping to the music, and picked up the pace with "Miss You," performed with Shemekia Copeland and Susan Tedeschi.

Obama was clearly savoring the moment, closing his eyes at times and nodding his head as he lip-synced the words.

The president rose at the end to introduce the ensemble as the "White House Blues All-Stars" for the final song of the night, "Sweet Home Chicago."

"For Michelle and me," the president said, "there's no blues like the song our artists have chosen to close with ? the blues from our hometown."

With that, the ensemble wrapped up the evening with "Sweet Home Chicago." And then Jagger handed off the mic to Obama for his presidential coda.

In advance of the concert, Grammy-winner Keb Mo had joked during a rehearsal break that Obama himself would perform, and there could even be a record in the works. He joked that Obama's record would be called, "After the second term, now I can finally get my groove on."

Maybe he wasn't joking after all.

The lineup for Tuesday's concert spanned multiple generations, from legends like King and Guy to young faces such as 26-year-old Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and Gary Clark Jr., whose style blends hip hop, contemporary soul and indie rock. Also performing were Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, with actress Taraji P. Henson as the program host and Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader.

The blues concert will be part of the "In Performance at the White House" series that airs on the Public Broadcasting Service. This one, designed to recognize Black History Month, will be broadcast on Monday on PBS stations and aired later on American Forces Network.

Stocks flat as housing data offsets Europe worries

By Reuters

Stocks were little changed on Wednesday as an encouraging U.S. housing report offset soft euro zone data, while the S&P 500 struggled to break through a high not seen since last May.

The benchmark S&P is up 8.3 percent for the year and more than 20 percent from October lows. But the index has been unable to convincingly pierce the 1,360 level, a high hit May 3 and a key resistance point that could spark further gains if broken.

U.S. home resales surged to a 1-1/2 year high in January and supply fell to its lowest in nearly seven years, the National Association of Realtors said, pointing to a nascent housing recovery.

European shares fell for a second straight session as recession concerns increased after data showed the euro zone's service sector unexpectedly shrank and amid residual worries about Greece despite its success in getting a bailout. The FTSEurofirst 300?index of top European shares was down 0.8 percent.

"On the one hand Greece looks like maybe it is finally sort of taken care of temporarily, U.S. economic data has been pretty good, there hasn't been any real bad news out there, so there is no real motivation to sell," said Uri Landesman, president of investment firm Platinum Partners in New York.

"But on the other hand, everybody is kind of thinking '1,080 to 1,360 is a hell of a run.'"

The Dow Jones industrial average?was down 15.48 points, or 0.12 percent, at 12,950.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index?slipped 2.60 points, or 0.19 percent, at 1,359.61. The Nasdaq Composite Index?was off 7.63 points, or 0.26 percent, at 2,940.94.

Dell Inc slumped 6.1 percent to $17.10 and was one of the biggest drags on the S&P. The world's No. 3 personal computer maker forecast revenue below expectations late Tuesday.

DURHAM, N.H. With the full sky shimmering in green aurora, Saturday night (Feb. 18, 2012) a team of scientists, including space physicist Marc Lessard and graduate students from the University of New Hampshire's Space Science Center, launched an instrument-laden, two-stage sounding rocket from the Poker Flat Research Range in Fairbanks, Alaska. The precision measurements from the rocket's instruments will shed new light on the physical processes that create the northern lights and further our understanding of the complex sun-Earth connection.

Funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling in the Alfvn resonator (MICA) mission sent a 40-foot Terrier-Black Brant rocket arcing through aurora 186 miles above Earth. The rocket sent a stream of real-time data back before landing some 200 miles downrange shortly after the launch.

Instruments onboard, including those built at UNH, sampled electric and magnetic fields as well as charged particles in Earth's upper atmosphere (ionosphere) that get sloshed back and forth by a specific form of electromagnetic energy known as Alfvn waves. These waves are thought to be a key driver of "discrete" aurora the typical, well-defined band of shimmering lights about six miles thick and stretching east to west from horizon to horizon.

The mission involves collaborators from Cornell University, Dartmouth College, the Southwest Research Institute, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Oslo.

According to Lessard, an associate professor at the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) and department of physics, the Alfvn resonator is a structure in the ionosphere that acts like a guitar string when "plucked" by energy delivered by the solar wind to Earth's magnetosphere high above.

"The ionosphere, some 62 miles up, is one end of the guitar string and there's another structure over a thousand miles up in space that is the other end of the string. When it gets plucked by incoming energy we can get a fundamental frequency and other 'harmonics' along the background magnetic field sitting above the ionosphere," Lessard says.

The Alfvn resonator is a narrow, confined area of space a channel that is perhaps several hundreds of miles tall but only six miles wide. It is hypothesized that energy from the sun accelerates a beam of electrons producing aurora and also increasing the overall electrical conductivity within the channel. Understanding how the ionosphere participates in providing the downward current is a critical component of understanding magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.

"The process turns on an auroral arc and then these waves develop on both sides of the resonator moving up and down. That's the theory and it appears to be valid, but there's never been any really good measurement of the process in action. That's what MICA is all about," Lessard says.

MICA will provide insight into these wave-driven aurora specifically, but Lessard notes there are other types of aurora that are initiated by different processes and these, too, were investigated at ground-based stations during the MICA launch by scientists, including Allison Jaynes and Ian Cohen, both Ph.D. students working with Lessard in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Research Laboratory at EOS.

UNH has a rich history of sounding rocket development and launches dating back to the early 1960s. As Lessard notes, rocket work is ideal training ground for graduate students, as it was for him at UNH, because, unlike satellite missions, rocket missions generally offer "soup to nuts" involvement from design, construction, launch, and data analysis. Rockets also offer relatively quick and inexpensive access to space compared to satellite missions.

As for the significance of continued investigation into auroral processes, Lessard notes, "It's all about understanding how the energy of the solar wind gets coupled to Earth's magnetic field and eventually gets dumped into the our upper atmosphere."

A reseller internet hosting service gives someone or a company a chance to make their websites competent to be accessed via the internet. Web hosts in many cases are large companies that supply lease to clients on the servers and supply them with internet connectivity. Banner Advertisement Disadvantages Of Free Banner Exchange

Published by witter | February 20, 2012 | | 18

In order to effectively promote your website, you need to use good promotion methods on your website. Banner advertising is one way of promoting an online business. Banner advertisements contain graphic and other informative elements. Looking at the images on a banner can give a better picture of the company. Perhaps this is why banner advertisements get more clicks than they used to in the past.

There are many sites that provide banner advertising services. All you have to do here is pay them monthly and ask them to put your banner on their site. This may help you get visitors from their website to your own site. This would also increase your sales. Getting profits will be a great deal faster than waiting for search engine optimization techniques to work. If you do not want to go for paid banner advertisement services, you can always opt for the free ones. Only remember that it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Free banner exchange is basically a free service which allows you to exchange banners with some other website. Here, both the sites are supposed to agree to put the others? banner on their site. Your banner will be placed on their site and theirs on yours. Since it is free, it does have its disadvantages.

The very first disadvantage is that there are not many sites to exchange banners with. You cannot exchange your banner with many sites because then you will end up with a lot of banners on your own. And, the more banners you have, the more time your website will take to load. Your visitors do not like waiting patiently for loading of websites and they might just exit. If you are running an affiliate website, then banner advertising may not work for you. People will click on the merchant?s banner that contains their website?s link and not yours.

Some sites employ the use of black hat techniques for their site?s search engine optimization. These sites also place many banner advertisements on their site. These sites do not have any content and are likely to be banned by Google. If you exchange banners with them, you will gather bad reputation for your own site. Therefore, carry on an extensive research on the site you are planning to exchange links with. Make sure that the site is reliable and safe.

New Hope For Open Source Textbooks

textbooksEditor’s note:?Verne Kopytoff is a technology journalist who lives the the Bay area. A college textbook can cost a staggering $200. Over four years of study, students can easily spend thousands of dollars on books on top of a hefty tuition. The situation is not much better in public elementary, middle and high schools, where taxpayers pick up the bill. California spends around $100 on every math and science book for its 2 million high school students, for example. But textbooks don?t have to be such a financial burden. Free digital open source textbooks are a promising alternative for states looking to cut costs and for universities trying to spare students from the soaring price of higher education. A growing number of laptop computers and tablets in the classroom provide an even greater opportunity to switch. Indeed, the fledgling open source textbook movement is getting extra attention these days. Experiments are underway in a number of states and districts. Last month, Utah?s State Office of Education said it would start a program to make open source textbooks available to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Washington State?s legislature is considering a similar program. The idea of open source textbooks is not new. They have been around for more than a decade, a period in which the major commercial publishers hiked textbook prices faster than inflation. Until recently, however, open source textbooks gained little traction, in part, because of the byzantine process for approving school books. State and local school boards, which insure that books meet standards, are not known for innovative thinking. California?s experiment with open source books started in 2009 when then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, facing a huge budget shortfall, endorsed a digital textbook initiative to quickly bring digital textbooks in the classroom. The effort, however, fell far short of the revolutionary change that he had hoped for. A state body evaluated a number of digital high school textbooks as to whether they met state standards. But the review served as merely a guide for local school districts, which have the ultimate say in which books they use and are under no requirement that those books be open source. Nor does it help the cause that most open source textbooks?produced by a mix of non-profits, academics and a handful of companies?lack the polish of the major commercial publishers like Pearson and McGraw-Hill. Anyone scanning the books will immediately notice

Syrian troops attack Deraa, cradle of uprising (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian troops attacked rebel strongholds in Deraa on Thursday where the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad erupted nearly a year ago, and the U.N. chief said crimes against humanity may have been committed in Syria.

The assault on Deraa followed a push against rebels in the cities of Hama and Homs, which has faced nearly two weeks of bombardment from Assad's forces, in an apparent drive to crush the 11-month-old uprising against his rule.

Assad has intensified a crackdown on protesters and insurgents, while also setting a February 26 referendum on a draft constitution that would end the Baath Party's monopoly on power, to be followed by a multi-party parliamentary election.

Syria's opposition and Western powers dismissed the promised reforms and U.N. Secretary General Bank Ki-moon, speaking before a non-binding vote at the United Nations on a draft resolution aimed at increasing pressure on Assad, said potential crimes against humanity were being carried out in Syria.

"We see neighborhoods shelled indiscriminately, hospitals used as torture centers, children as young as 10 years old killed and abused. We see almost ... certain crimes against humanity," he told reporters in Austria.

China, which along with Russia blocked a draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council backing an Arab call for Assad to step aside, said it was sending a senior envoy to Syria.

"(China) does not approve of the use of force to interfere in Syria or the forceful pushing of a so-called regime change," Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said.

Zhai, who will travel to Syria on Friday and Saturday, said China believed that "sanctions or the threat of sanctions are not conducive to the appropriate resolution of this issue."

An authoritative Chinese newspaper, apparently responding to criticism of the Chinese and Russian vetoes, said on Thursday that meddling in Syria by foreign powers risked stirring up a hornets' nest of bloodshed and instability in the region.

The commentary in the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party, carried an author's pen name that is often used to state Beijing's foreign policy stance.

World powers must handle Syria and tensions elsewhere in the Middle East with a sense of realism, the paper said, adding that the spread of conflict would be a "catastrophe" in a crucial phase of global economic recovery.

"The Middle East is the world's most important fuel depot. If gripped by chaos, oil prices would skyrocket, shocking the stock market, financial systems and economies," the paper said.

FOURTEEN KILLED NEAR HAMA

After bombarding Homs for nearly two weeks, the military has begun a new offensive in Hama, a city with a bloody history of resistance to Assad's late father Hafez al-Assad. Activists said at least 14 people were killed in bombardment of the nearby town of Kfar Nubouzeh on Thursday.

The state news agency said security forces "chased and fought an armed terrorist group in the Hamidiya neighborhood of Hama that has been terrifying citizens" and arrested some of its members, who had assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

In Deraa, a city on the Jordanian border, the sound of explosions and machinegun fire echoed through districts under attack by government troops, residents said.

"The army bombardment started around dawn and after that exchanges of fire occurred," Hussam Izzedine, a member of the Syrian human rights organization Sawasiah, told Reuters from Deraa. He said the rebel Free Syrian Army has been providing security for protests in some parts of the city.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Right said three members of the security forces were killed in clashes with army deserters.

There was no immediate comment from Syrian authorities, who tightly restrict media access to the country.

An army offensive in April put down large demonstrations in Deraa, which had been provoked by the arrest of several women activists and the detention of schoolboys who had written freedom slogans on walls, inspired by other Arab revolts.

Assad's offer of a referendum on a new constitution in two weeks' time, leading to multi-party elections within 90 days, drew scornful rejections from the opposition and the West.

The constitution would allow the president to be elected for two seven-year terms. Assad's father Hafez was president for 29 years and was succeeded by his son when he died in 2000.

Thousands of civilians have been killed since the uprising began in March. The government says more than 2,000 soldiers and police have been killed by foreign-backed "terrorists."

Congress reaches bipartisan payroll tax-cut deal | G7Finance.com ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. congressional negotiators agreed on Wednesday to a bipartisan deal to extend a payroll tax cut, which would give a victory to Democrats and allow Republicans to get out from under an issue that threatened to hurt them in the November elections.

U.S. Senator Max Baucus, a Democrat, told Reuters enough negotiators from both parties had signed off on the accord to clear it for a vote by the full Senate and House of Representatives.

The two chambers are expected to vote on the deal before lawmakers depart Friday for a week-long recess.

Just hours earlier, talks hit a snag when a number of Republicans and a least a few Democrats declined to sign off on the deal, reached earlier in the day by lead negotiators.

But those concerns were apparently resolved.

The tax cut had divided Republicans and risked further angering voters, who already hold Congress in low regard, if they were seen as blocking renewal of the tax relief.

?We?re determined to put this to an end,? said Republican Representative Renee Ellmers. She said Republicans want to ?move on to the real issues: the president?s failed policies? to support the ailing economy.

House Speaker John Boehner and fellow Republican leaders cleared the way for a deal on Monday when they dropped their demand that there be spending cuts to pay for a reduction in the payroll tax in order to avoid an increase in the federal debt.

The decision showed Boehner?s pragmatic side since his party would have been blamed for any failure to extend the tax cut, which many of his members initially opposed.

DODGING THE BLAME

Since becoming speaker in January 2011, Boehner has had problems keeping some conservative members in line, particularly those who see deficit reduction as their chief mission.

The agreement would extend the payroll tax cut, first implemented in 2011 at the request of Obama, until the end of this year for about 160 million U.S. workers.

Passage would end a battle that has raged since last year over legislation some economists say is vital to keeping the U.S. recovery on track by injecting more consumer spending into the economy.

The payroll tax cut is estimated to put $1,000 in additional money in the hands of the average working family over one year. And extending unemployment benefits is seen by economists as one of the most effective ways of encouraging consumer spending because the unemployed use their benefit checks for basic needs.

Long known as the party of low taxes, Republicans initially fought the payroll tax cut that largely helped low- and middle-income workers, saying temporary tax cuts did little to stimulate the economy.

With economists disagreeing and Democrats simultaneously forcing Republicans to go on the record in favor of tax cuts for the wealthy, Republicans found themselves in a losing position.

As their leaders tried to move into winning territory, it only stoked Republican infighting as conservatives, including Tea Party activists, resisted handing Democrats a victory.

Analysts said opinion polls showing public disgust with a gridlocked Congress may have helped drive lawmakers, many of whom are up for re-election this year, toward a deal.

Internet in Iran severely disrupted as elections loom (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Millions of Iranians have suffered serious disruption recently in accessing email and Internet social networking sites, raising concerns authorities are stepping up censorship of opposition supporters ahead of parliamentary elections next month.

Iranians have grappled with increased obstacles to using the Internet since opposition supporters used social networking sites to organize widespread protests after the disputed 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The country is preparing to hold parliamentary elections on March 2, the first time Iranians will go to the polls since President Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election. The government denied any fraud in the vote, which ignited street protests that were crushed violently by security services after eight months.

The new Internet blockade affected the most common form of secure connections from Friday, according to outside experts and Iranian bloggers. Traffic was said to have returned to normal on Monday. "I haven't been able to open pages for days but now it's working again, although slowly," said Hamid Reza, a 20-year-old student in Tehran, who was reluctant to give his surname.

The cut-off appeared to target all encrypted international websites outside Iran that depend on the Secure Sockets Layer protocol, which display addresses beginning with https, according to Earl Zmijewski of Renesys, a U.S. company that tracks Internet traffic worldwide.

Google, which uses SSL for its Gmail service, reported that traffic from Iran to its email system fell precipitously.

Iran's Ministry of Communications and Technology denied knowing of the disruption, saying the origin was elsewhere.

"The government is testing different tools," said Hamed Behravan, who reports on Iranian technology issues for the U.S. government-funded Voice of America. "They might have wanted to see the public reaction."

NATIONAL INTERNET SYSTEM?

Many Iranians are concerned the government may be preparing to unveil its much documented national internet system, effectively giving the authorities total control over what content Iranian users will be able to access.

The authorities say it is designed to speed up the system and filter out sites that are regarded as "unclean."

"The Internet is an uninvited guest which has entered our country," said Mohammad Reza Aghamiri, a member of the Iranian government's Internet filtering committee, "and because of its numerous problems, severe supervision is required."

He told the daily Arman that Internet search engines like Google were a threat to the country.

"We have never considered Google as appropriate to serve Iranian users, because Google is at the service of the CIA," he said. "It has adopted a vivid hostile stance against us."ble.

Opposition supporters believe Iranian authorities were targeting their attempts to hold a rally calling on the government to release leaders of the opposition Green movement, Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi.

The two leaders were placed under house arrest on February 14 last year after they urged their supporters to join a rally in support of uprisings across the Arab world.

Iranian authorities have vowed to quell any public protest against the protracted house arrest of Mousavi and Karoubi.

"It could just be a coincidence but my guess is that the system was looking to block communication between opposition supporters," said an Iranian analyst who did not want to be named.

The disruption has riled some Iranian members of parliament and they have vowed to look for those responsible.

An MP, Ahmad Tavakoli, told the semi-official Mehr News Agency that the issue was creating widespread discontent that could "cost the establishment dearly."

"This filtering leads people to break the law, and using proxies makes the blocking of sites and signals ineffective, because using proxies becomes widespread," he said.

Authoritarian Arab governments under popular pressure have sought to shut down Internet service to make it harder for opponents to mobilize protests, but with little success.
