Central Florida teen shot while riding home from church

Deputies say a 15-year-old girl was shot while riding home from church with her parents near Orlando.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office says the girl was a "completely innocent bystander" who got caught in the crossfire from two approaching vehicle Sunday evening.

The Orlando Sentinel ( http://bit.ly/Pf4vO4) reports the girl's father turned onto another road to get out of the way. But a gunshot shattered the van's rear window and his daughter was slumped over.

Her condition was not immediately available.

Deputies say the girl and her family had gone to church to celebrate her mother's birthday.

Witnesses say the gunfire came from an SUV and a sedan. Deputies say it appears the van driven by the girl's family was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When the Lights Go Out: Tips for Preserving Business Continuity ...

Keeping critical workloads operational and preventing data corruption are a data center?s top priorities during power outages and it is an inconvenient reality that, sometimes, shutting down servers is the only way to meet those goals. To do this, data centers have long relied on a combination of UPSes and power protection software. However, with virtualized servers, safeguarding data during power failures can become significantly more complicated.

?

Most server virtualization software vendors offer ?live migration? products, but despite their many advantages, none include built-in functionality for responding to power outages. Furthermore, most power protection systems for virtualized server environments come with their own command console. As a result, technicians must use one tool for virtualization management and a separate one for power management. That weakens their productivity and can delay response time during utility failures.

?

These challenges can definitely become issues that impact business continuity and risk data integrity, as response time and operational efficiency are of upmost importance for protecting data during a failure. The good news is there are several ways for companies to simplify disaster recovery processes in order to fully take advantage of server virtualization?s benefits:

?

1.??? Download open source management code. Pre-written, open source operating system code for shutting down servers gracefully and in the correct sequence during power failures is being developed and distributed via websites such as Network UPS Tools. By downloading, installing and customizing such code, data center managers can equip their infrastructure to shut down servers in the proper order when utility/server power becomes unavailable. This solution offers an easy yet extremely powerful and highly configurable power management option to organizations that use and customize Linux or other open source solutions, a category that includes most operators of cloud computing data centers.

?

2.??? Add automated scripts to advanced power protection software. Many advanced power protection solutions enable users to create scripts that automatically respond to specific alarms in a predefined manner. Companies can use such scripts to augment their power protection system?s built-in functionality in sophisticated ways. For example, technicians could extend UPS battery runtime by creating a script that automatically shuts down virtual machines running non-critical workloads early in a power outage and then consolidates the remaining virtual machines onto a smaller number of host servers.

?

3.??? Deploy advanced power protection and management software.
Deploying modern power protection and management software significantly eases the complexities of keeping critical applications continuously available during power outages. Some solutions even integrate directly into the dashboards of leading virtualization management products, enabling technicians to view, monitor and administer not only physical and virtual servers but also uninterruptible power systems (UPSes) and other power devices through a single console. Consequently, these solutions can be configured with the aid of the virtualization management system to shut down both physical and virtual servers in pre-defined sequences that minimize exposure to data loss.

?

Traditionally, when a virtualized data center loses power, technicians must manually initiate the recovery process in a specific sequence, often in the face of intense time pressure. The latest software developments can increase productivity and response time by identifying the power failure immediately, initiating a backup site, and triggering disaster recovery failover and planned migration processes to maintain business continuity and data integrity when shutting down servers is unavoidable.

?

Within the span of a few years, server virtualization has progressed from promising new technology to data center mainstay. While virtualization does arm IT and facilities managers with potent new tools for maintaining business continuity during electrical failures, it also makes preserving data integrity, business continuity and brand reputation during power outages more complicated.

?

With the high costs of downtime, lacking a truly comprehensive power protection system in a virtualized environment can mean risking the availability of your essential applications, the safety of your data and the image of your business.

?

The good news is the latest in power management solutions positions companies to take full advantage of server virtualization?s rewards. Companies should therefore view advanced power management software as an essential component of doing businesses within any server virtualization environment.

Key role for Bill Clinton at Democratic convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will introduce Obama on Sept. 6 before tens of thousands of people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

The Rumpus Literary Website Brings Back Old-Fashioned Letter Writing

lettersStephen Elliott, founder and editor-in-chief of a literary website called The Rumpus, has found a modern-day audience for old-school letters. His site, a mixture of old-world letter writing and the modern web, is called Letters In The Mail and it aims to further disrupt the way we think about publishing. Elliott is a writer, filmmaker (his movie About Cherry comes out later this year), and occasional teacher He started The Rumpus in 2009, and it has evolved into a mix of reviews, interviews, the popular "Dear Sugar" advice column, with lots of other content. EYES ON LONDON: Records, a surprise and dark skies

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

THE DAY'S ACTION

So, two more swimming world records were broken on Sunday and Spain's highly favored football team tumbled out of medal contention after losing to Honduras.

American Dana Vollmer won the 100 butterfly in a world record and was followed by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, who set a world mark to win the 100-meter breaststroke.

The biggest surprise of the day came from France's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favored United States and Australia.

TWITTER TRASH TALK

Hope Solo's angry Twitter rants are U.S. coach Pia Sundhage's latest challenge.

The U.S. women's soccer team won 3-0 Saturday against Colombia, but Solo, the U.S. goalie, took exception on Twitter to comments by her former colleague Brandi Chastain, who is now a TV commentator.

"The game has changed from a decade ago," Solo tweeted.

Sundhage says she spoke with Solo and reminded her that the most important thing now is the team's next Olympic game against North Korea on Tuesday. But the coach says she's not going to bother stopping her star goalie from tweeting.

"It's all about the next game," Sundhage said.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

British swimmer Rebecca Adlington was probably the most surprised by her bronze medal swim in the 400 meters final.

Her tweet from earlier Sunday: "Just sneaked into tonight's final in 8th place! Not expecting anything tonight, all I can do is my best :-) thank you for all the support."

EYEING THE ODDS

Determined to see a British sports book, I discovered William Hill in Euston. It's nothing like Las Vegas.

Think more like an empty OTB. One television showed the Olympics. The rest were airing dog racing.

But the variety was interesting. They've got bundled bets such as Usain Bolt winning the 100 and 200 meters and the U.S.A men and women's basketball teams both winning gold at 9-to-4. A soccer bet at 8-to-1 bundles the Brazilian men and the American women to win the gold.

The overwhelming favorite is David Rudisha of Kenya in the 800 meters at 1-to-12. The next closest is the American women's basketball team at 1-to-10.

For a big payoff, go for the "Olympic Football Yes/No." Pick all six correctly, including if all six substitutes will be used in the Britain vs. Cameroon women's soccer match, and it pays 33-to-1.

BRITS AND HOOPS

Football's the undisputed king of sports in Britain. But basketball is capturing the imagination here at the Olympics.

After being disappointed in the road race on Saturday, Britons flocked to the basketball arena for their team's hoops opener against Russia.

The upper level is jammed, the Union Jack is flying proudly and the crowd is roaring at every basket by Luol Deng or Joel Freeland.

So far Chinese basketball star Yi Jianlian has had difficulty finding playing time in the NBA.

That may change. After scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds Sunday in a loss to a Spanish team full of NBA players, Chinese coach Bob Donewald says he has no idea why his best player can't get minutes stateside.

But Kobe's still the top Olympian on the social media site in terms of overall numbers.

Facebook has released the following overall fan figures:

LONELY SEATS

The rows of empty seats at some Olympic venues have enraged sports fans in London who tried but failed to get Olympic tickets.

And now the seats are putting their side of the story across ? through Twitter, naturally.

An account, (at)Olympic seat, emerged on Sunday evening.

"I feel so empty," read one post, accompanied by an avatar of empty seats.

"It was my lifelong ambition to be an Olympic seat," read another tweet. "To provide rest and comfort for cheering sports fans. I feel like such a failure."

BELLE OF THE BAR

The Americans dominated the afternoon qualifying for women's gymnastics, but Britain's athletes got the loudest cheers.

An ovation greeted Britain's Beth Tweddle, who earned a 16.133 on the uneven bars for the top score of the session.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

IT'S OKAY, ROOMIE

Jordyn Wieber has released a statement of support for close friend Aly Raisman, who bumped her out of the all-around gymnastics finals.

Wieber, the reigning world champion, had to watch Raisman's performance knowing a strong showing would keep her out of the individual competition. She left the arena sobbing after missing the cut.

"It was hard because of course I wanted that spot. But I also wanted Aly to do her best for the team," she said.

The two are roommates here at the London Games. Wieber will be relegated to cheerleader now as Gabby Douglas and Raisman compete for the all-around title.

"It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics," she said. "I'm proud of Aly and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and I was able to help the team get to the Finals. It was always going to be close between the three of us doing all-around and in the end it is what it is."

Olympics shocker: Jordyn Wieber, US all-around gymnast, fails to qualify

This was, we have been told, the deepest women's gymnastics team that the United States have ever sent to the Olympics.

On Sunday, that became a potential problem.

Only two girls from the US team can qualify for the Olympic all-around final ? the event that made Mary Lou and Nastia and Nadia gymnasts who no longer needed a last name. In London, it turns out, neither of the American girls on the mat will be named Jordyn.

2012 London Olympics quiz: Are you ready for a gold medal?

Jordyn Wieber, the 2011 all-around world champion and a strong favorite to win gold in the all-around here, finished with the third-highest score on the American team in its qualification round Sunday. Now, Ms. Wieber will be sitting in the stands Thursday night when Gabrielle Douglas and Alexandra Raisman compete for the all-around title that many thought would be hers.

From the perspective of Team USA, gold-medal hopes in the all-around are not dashed. Earlier this month, Ms. Douglas topped Wieber at the Olympic trials in San Jose, Calif. ? though by only 0.1 points. Douglas could certainly win gold. But she had been seen as being less consistent than Wieber. In Ms. Raisman, the US team has someone perhaps more consistent than Douglas but less thrilling.

In Wieber and Douglas, the US was setting up a storyline eerily similar to Beijing ? a potential 1-2 punch of gymnasts equally gifted yet completely opposite. Wieber, the powerful technician, is all about business ? strong as a racehorse and built to win. Douglas is all smiles and sunshine, a lithe leaper whose flexible contortions express the joy within.

It seemed set to be an irresistible event.

Then Wieber stumbled Saturday, literally. She was shaky on the balance beam, then stepped out on her floor routine. The scores were not catastrophic. In fact, with four of the five qualifying groups finished, her 60.032 would have been the top score for any other team except Russia, and there it would have been second. In other words, she only missed the all-around because her teammates were better than every other gymnast in the world, save one Russian.

That would seem to bode well for the team event Tuesday. Indeed, the cumulative US score Sunday was more than a point better than Russia and a whopping 5 points better than No. 3 China. The question is: How will Wieber manage the disappointment?

On Sunday, her team prevented her from competing for a life-long dream.

On Tuesday, her team cannot win without her.

(AP) ? The chairman of the House's tax-writing committee says he's been diagnosed with a "very early, highly treatable and curable type" of cancer.

GOP Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan says in a statement that doctors found non-Hodgkin lymphoma during a recent physical. Camp says he'll continue in Congress and retain his committee chairmanship during chemotherapy.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the cells of the immune system. The 59-year-old Camp says he has large B-cell lymphoma. B-cells are a type of white blood cell that helps fight infections.

Camp, who's served since 1991, has said he wants to combine a push to head off pending tax increases with ways to force Congress to revamp the tax code next year.

2 dead after winds slam Midwest, Northeast

As powerful storms, with lightning and high winds, ripped through the Northeast, the Twittersphere thundered with users uploading pictures. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News and news services

Updated at 9:00 a.m. ET: At least two people were killed after severe thunderstorms unleashed heavy rain and strong winds across parts of the Midwest and Northeast on Thursday, grounding hundreds of flights and leaving tens of thousands of people without power.

In Brooklyn, N.Y., a??61-year-old man was killed when scaffolding fell on him after lightning struck a church steeple, WNBC reported.?Police say the lightning brought down bricks onto some church scaffolding, causing part of it to collapse on the man as he walked by. He was pronounced dead at Long Island College Hospital shortly after the 8 p.m. accident in Cobble Hill.

The Associated Press reported?that a second person, a woman in Pennsylvania, was killed by a falling tree.

The storms spawned a tornado that touched down in Elmira, New York, damaging a mall and a local country club, the National Weather Service said.

Other towns across?eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and upstate New York also reported downed trees.

"Emergency crews are responding to numerous calls, including reported fires and downed power lines," the Elmira Star Gazette reported. "Many streets are impassable due to fallen trees and power lines, as well as traffic signals knocked out by power outages."

As the storms sent black, menacing clouds rolling across some cities, hail ranging from the size of a dime to a quarter fell in some areas of Pennsylvania, AccuWeather.com said.

More than 51,000 customers were without power in Ohio, said American Electric Power of Ohio. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement that the storms knocked out power for nearly 93,700 utility customers across the state.

Move Over, Pebble: MetaWatch?s New ?Strata? Aims To Make A Splash On Kickstarter Too

strata2Sure, the Pebble has nabbed its share of headlines and accolades lately, but that doesn't mean it's got the nascent smart watch market all sewed up. Case in point: veteran MetaWatch recently pulled back the curtains on its new Strata smart watch, and it's already picking up plenty of steam on (where else?) Kickstarter. Unlike some of the other smartwatch concepts that have been dreamed up in recent months, the Strata is the brainchild of a known quantity. MetaWatch has been tackling the problem of putting topical information on people's wrists for nearly eight years now -- the company's roots lay with the clothing and accessory mavens at Fossil, which produced a pair of fashion-conscious smart timepieces in May 2011 before the team split off and formed their own company that August.

Yanks beat Red Sox again; Ichiro makes NY debut

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:12 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Ichiro Suzuki stood in right field of a packed Yankee Stadium, wearing New York's famed pinstripes for the first time, and needed a reality check.

"In Japan we say you grab your cheek, you twist your cheek, to see if it's real or not, to see if I'm not dreaming," Suzuki said. "And that's really how I feel right now."

Oh it was real all right, Ichiro.

Raul Ibanez and Russell Martin hit two-run homers, Curtis Granderson capped the scoring with an eighth-inning grand slam and the Yankees powered past the Boston Red Sox 10-3 on Friday night.

In Suzuki's first home game with the Yankees, Phil Hughes (10-8) gave up three solo homers but little else in seven innings to help the Yankees beat Boston for the sixth time in seven games this year - New York's best start to a season against the Red Sox since opening 6-0 in 1994.

The rivals were meeting in the Bronx for the first time this year, the latest in a non-strike season the teams have met at Yankee Stadium. New York was returning from a rough 2-5 trip in which the Yankees lost Alex Rodriguez to a broken hand. The Red Sox had won just once in six games coming in. The loss dropped them to 49-51.

"We're two games under .500. We're the Boston Red Sox, so if anyone's thrilled with where we're at they better reevaluate because I don't like losing. I know everyone else doesn't like losing," Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "We've got to play better, now."

With the Red Sox foundering in last place in the AL East and David Ortiz and Rodriguez on the disabled list, it felt as if the rivalry had lost some of its luster. Suzuki's presence helped give the game some buzz.

The 10-time All-Star was dealt to New York during its visit to Seattle on Monday. He started in right field and batted eighth Friday. Suzuki was met with a sustained ovation followed by chants of "Iiiichiro," when he came up for the first time in the second inning. He hit a fly to center field.

In his second at-bat, he singled and scored on Martin's two-run homer to left field off Aaron Cook (2-4). Suzuki finished 1-for-4 and scored twice, including his first run with the Yankees.

""It has been a while since this type of experience," Suzuki said of the atmosphere and winning attitude in New York.

Almost as if they were toying with Boston in Bobby Valentine's first trip to New York as a manager since he was fired by the Mets in 2002, the Yankees scored in the bottom half of each of the three innings the Red Sox homered.

Pedroia gave Boston the lead with a drive to left off Hughes on a full-count pitch in the first. But Ibanez followed with a two-run shot in the bottom half when the Yankees scored three times after the Red Sox failed to turn what could have been an easy inning-ending double play.

With runners on first and third and shortstop Mike Aviles behind second base in a shift, Mark Teixeira hit a routine grounder to Pedroia. He made a quick toss to Aviles, who was slow to make the turn and Teixeira beat the throw. A run scored and Ibanez then hit a line drive into the first few rows of the short right field porch.

"Tex did a great job of hustling that out," Ibanez said. "He was responsible for that inning."

Valentine said of the missed opportunity:

"He's playing the shift and he comes over to the base from the other side. It was an awkward throw," he said.

In the third, Carl Crawford homered for the first time this season - in his 10th game - after missing the first 90 because of wrist surgery and several setbacks. Teixeira had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

The catchers traded long balls in the fourth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 20th of the year. Martin responded with his 11th for a 6-3 lead.

Hughes retired 10 of his final 11 batters, allowing only a walk to Jacoby Ellsbury in the fifth. Overall he yielded five hits and one walk. Hughes struck out five. The three homers gave him 25, tying him for the major league lead with Seattle's Jason Vargas.

"He did a nice job after we got the lead to 6-3," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He settled down nicely."

Cook gave up six runs and seven hits in four innings for Boston.

Yankees third baseman Eric Chavez was hit by a pitch above the right ankle in the eighth. X-rays were negative but he said the leg was sore. Already not scheduled to play Saturday, Chavez said he was not sure if he would be able to pinch-hit Saturday. He has to see how he feels in the morning.

Granderson hit the Yankees' seventh grand slam this season off former New York reliever Mark Melancon.

NOTES: In the 1981, strike-interrupted season, the Red Sox first played in New York on Sept. 11. ... Ortiz had his walking boot removed and tested his strained right Achilles by taking batting practice before the game. ... Girardi said RF Nick Swisher (hip flexor) might play Saturday. ... Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain (dislocated ankle) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for Double-A Trenton on Sunday.

Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have developed a new computational method that will make it easier for scientists to identify and prioritize genes, drug targets, and strategies for repositioning drugs that are already on the market. By mining large datasets more simply and efficiently, researchers will be able to better understand gene-gene, protein-protein, and drug/side-effect interactions. The new algorithm will also help scientists identify fellow researchers with whom they can collaborate...

Md. man calling self Joker arrested with weapons

The 28-year-old, who had recently been fired from postage meter company Pitney Bowes, reportedly called himself the "Joker" and vowed to "blow everybody up." NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 6:37 p.m. ET: Police detained a Maryland man and recovered numerous guns from a home Thursday night after he allegedly made threats referring to the Joker this week.

Pat Collins of NBC Washington and Michael Kosnar of NBC News contributed to this report by M. Alex Johnson of NBC News. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Julie Parker, a spokeswoman for the Prince George's County police, said Friday that?authorities had "thwarted a terrorist threat."

Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw said the man, whom authorities identified as Neil Edwin Prescott, 28, of Crofton, Md., made a threat toward his employer, Pitney Bowes, in two phone calls to his supervisor Monday. Prescott was upset about losing his job and said: "I am the real Joker, and I'm going to blow everyone up," McGaw said.

Prescott was fired from his job as a subcontractor at Pitney Bowes, an office supply company, on an unrelated matter, the company said.

A Maryland man is accused of plotting an attack on his workplace using a weapons cache that was uncovered by authorities. NBC News' Chris Clackum reports.

Magaw said police took the threats very seriously "in light of what happened in Aurora" ? a reference to the shooting deaths last week of 12 people in Aurora, Colo., at a screening of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises." The suspect in that shooting, James Eagan Holmes, ?reportedly told police "I am the Joker" after he was arrested.

Prince George's County Police

Authorities display the cache of weapons found in Neil Edwin Prescott's home.

A police database showed that Prescott had 13 guns registered in his name. Officers from the Anne Arundel County police, the Prince George's County police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives obtained a warrant and searched his home in Crofton, about 25 miles from Washington, on Thursday night.

Ashan Benedict of the ATF's Baltimore division said at a news conference that investigators 25 firearms, including semiautomatic rifles and pistols, and several thousand rounds of ammunition from the home. Magaw said that when they arrived, Prescott was wearing a shirt that read, "Guns don't kill people, I do."

Police evacuated part of the apartment building and took Prescott into custody without incident, they said. He hasn't been charged and was undergoing a medical evaluation Friday at the Anne Arundel County Medical Center.

Authorities detailed the weaponry in Prescott's home in their search warrant:

  • 4 30-round magazines
  • 2 shotguns
  • 1 Beretta .40-cal handgun
  • 1 Ruger .45-cal handgun
  • 2 KAHR 9mm handguns
  • 1 Beretta 9mm handgun
  • 2 Sig Sauer P226 handguns
  • 1 Browning Arms handgun
  • 2 Mauser rifles
  • 1 FN Herstal rifle
  • 1 Ruger 357 handgun
  • 1 Night scope

Onslaught looms as Assad forces pound Aleppo outskirts

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's artillery pounded rebel-held areas around Aleppo on Friday, preparing the ground for an onslaught on Syria's biggest city where the United States has said it fears a "massacre" may be imminent.

Opposition sources said the shelling, which follows intensive ground and air bombardment of the city itself, was an attempt to stop fighters from resupplying rebel units inside Aleppo.

"They are shelling at random to instill a state of terror," said Anwar Abu Ahed, a rebel commander outside the city.

The battle for Aleppo, a major power centre that is home to 2.5 million people, is being seen as a potentially game changing turning point in the 16-month uprising against Assad that could give one side an edge in a conflict where both the rebels and the government have struggled to gain the upper hand.

A rebel commander said insurgents had attacked a convoy of Syrian army tanks heading towards the city, as the government continued to redeploy forces from other parts of the country to bolster its forces there.

The fate of Syria itself - an ethnically fragmented nation of 22 million people - is likely to determine the future of the wider region for years to come amid fears that its own sectarian tensions could spill across its porous borders.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush his opponents.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the State Department, said.

As the remaining residents of Aleppo braced themselves for more bloodshed, General Robert Mood, the outgoing head of the U.N. monitoring mission, told Reuters he thought Assad's days in power were numbered.

"In my opinion it is only a matter of time before a regime that is using such heavy military power and disproportional violence against the civilian population is going to fall," the Norwegian general, who left Damascus on July 19, said.

Navay Pillay, the United Nations human rights chief, said a pattern had emerged as Assad's forces resorted to shelling, tank fire and door-to-door searches.

"All this, taken along with the reported build-up of forces in and around Aleppo, bodes ill for the people of that city," Pillay said in statement.

MORTAR ROUNDS

Government troops stationed on the outskirts of the city unleashed barrages of heavy-caliber mortar rounds on its western neighborhoods, while Russian-built MI-25 helicopter gunships struck in the east, opposition activists in the city said.

The heavy fighting follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Aleppo. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

On Thursday, thirty-four people were killed in and around Aleppo, according to opposition activists.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels had attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to Aleppo's city centre, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the centre. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey.

HELICOPTERS OVER DAMASCUS

In Damascus on Friday, four helicopters flew over southern areas of the capital, firing heavy machine guns into the districts of Hajar al-Aswad and Tadamon as well as the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, a resident said.

"I can see two above me right now, heading towards Hajar al-Aswad," she said by telephone, the pounding of guns audible in the background. Helicopters were flying low and appeared to be targeting specific buildings.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, though it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, while stopping short of arming them.

It is unclear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

A Syrian parliamentarian from the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubber-stamp assembly elected in May which is dominated by Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, has put himself forward as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria to help steer a power transfer.

Tlas visited Saudi Arabia before going on to Turkey where he met Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership.

Meanwhile, a source close to the mediation effort told Reuters on Friday that international mediator Kofi Annan was still trying to forge a political solution to the Syria crisis despite being made a scapegoat for the failure of the two sides to agree.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
