Also, chances of contracting Q fever from nearby sheep and goat farms increased with the number of animals rather than with the number of farms, the research found, hinting at higher health risks from 'mega farms'.
The researchers, from Utrecht University, measured increased levels of particulate matter containing microbes and microbial toxins near livestock farms. They studied health effects by screening medical records from 50 general practitioners servicing 200,000 patients in regions with high and low densities of livestock farms.
In regions with many livestock farms, doctors reported less asthma, COPD, upper respiratory tract infections and hay fever, a result that mimics some earlier studies that saw less allergies in children who grown up on farms. In this study, the medical records did not specify whether symptoms were allergy- related, so the researchers do not know whether the effect is indeed limited to allergies.
The research however also showed that in areas with many livestock farms, people who suffer from asthma or COPD developed twice as much pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections than people in regions with little livestock activity. The overall prevalence of pneumonia also was higher in high-density areas.
The study period included an unusually severe outbreak of Q fever, an infectious disease of cattle, sheep or goats, which can cause flu-like symptoms and pneumonia in humans. Between 2007 and 2010, close to 4,000 people in the Netherlands became ill; at least ten of them died.
The researchers found that the risk of contracting Q fever increased with the proximity of sheep farms or goat farms. An even stronger correlation was found between Q fever risk and the number of animals kept in the area, suggesting that mega farms could bring more environmental health risks than smaller farms.
The study contributes to on-going debates about intensive animal farming in densely populated regions in countries such as Germany and the Netherlands.
Lead researcher Dr Lidwien Smit said: "Our study is one of the first to show that living close to farms leads to exacerbation of symptoms for people with lung conditions and that during a Q fever outbreak, the risk of contracting Q fever increased with the number of livestock animals kept close by."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? While North America appears to be off the hook, scientists are scrambling to pinpoint exactly where and when a dead NASA climate satellite will plummet back to Earth on Friday.
The 6-ton, bus-sized satellite is expected to break into more than a hundred pieces as it plunges through the atmosphere, most of it burning up.
But if you're hoping for a glimpse, the odds are slim. Most sightings occur by chance because the re-entry path can't be predicted early enough to alert people, said Canadian Ted Molczan, who tracks satellites for a hobby.
In all his years of monitoring, Molczan has witnessed only one tumble back to Earth ? the 2004 return of a Russian communications satellite.
It "looked like a brilliant star with a long glowing tail," he said in an email.
The best guess so far is that the 20-year-old Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite will hit sometime Friday afternoon or early evening, Eastern time. The latest calculations indicate it will not be over the United States, Canada and Mexico during that time.
Until Thursday, every continent but Antarctic was a potential target. Predicting where and when the freefalling satellite will land is an imprecise science, but officials should be able to narrow it down a few hours ahead.
While most of the satellite pieces will disintegrate, 26 large metal chunks ? the largest about 300 pounds ? are expected to survive, hit and scatter somewhere on the planet. With nearly three-quarters of the world covered in water, chances are that it will be a splashdown.
If the re-entry is visible, "it'll look like a long-lived meteor," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.
Since the dawn of the Space Age, no one has been injured by falling space debris. The only confirmed case of a person being hit by space junk was in 1997 when Lottie Williams of Tulsa, Okla., was grazed in the shoulder by a small bit of debris from a discarded piece of a Delta rocket.
The odds of someone somewhere on Earth getting struck by the NASA satellite are 1 in 3,200. But any one person's odds are astronomically lower ? 1 in 21 trillion.
"You're way more likely to be hit by lightning" than by the satellite, McDowell said.
NASA has warned people not to touch any satellite part they might chance upon. There are no hazardous chemicals on board, but people can get hurt by sharp edges, the space agency said.
The U.S. tracks the roughly 22,000 pieces of satellites, rockets and other junk orbiting the Earth. Nowadays, the world is more eco-conscious about what it puts up in space. Harvard's McDowell noted that two massive Russian rocket stages have plunged back this year with little notice.
"The only reason this is getting attention is because NASA, as a matter of due diligence, put out a press release," he said.

NEW YORK ? The U.S. and its allies changed tactics Tuesday on how to avert a crisis over a Palestinian statehood bid, as the White House announced that President Barack Obama would meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. At the same time, U.S. officials conceded they could not stop Abbas from officially launching his case for the Security Council's approval of the statehood effort.
But they hoped to contain the fallout by urging Abbas not to push for an actual vote in the Council, where the U.S. has promised a veto, to give international peacemakers time to produce a statement that would be the basis for resumed Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
Obama is expected to make a pro forma request to Abbas when they meet Wednesday not to proceed with his initial plan, but also make the case for the Palestinian leader to essentially drop the move for statehood recognition after delivering his letter of intent to the U.N., expected Friday.
"The president will be able to say very directly why we believe that action at the United Nations is not the way to achieve a Palestinian state," said Ben Rhodes, the White House deputy national security adviser. He noted that Abbas has indicated his intent to go the Security Council, but said Obama "has made it clear that we do not believe that that will lead to a Palestinian state, that we oppose such efforts."
Obama will also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.
The new approach would see the "quartet" of Mideast peace mediators ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia ? issue a statement addressing both Palestinian and Israeli concerns and setting a timetable for a return to the long-stalled peace talks, officials said.
Israel would have to accept its pre-1967 borders with land exchanges as the basis for a two-state solution, and the Palestinians would have to recognize Israel's Jewish character if they were to reach a deal quickly, officials close to the talks said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing diplomacy.
European officials, supported by the United States, were presenting the contours of a compromise agreement to the Israeli and Palestinian governments, and asking for tough concessions from each. Officials said several extremely challenging hurdles were leading to some pessimism as to whether mediators would be able to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table, with both sides being pressed to accept positions they've long deemed anathema to their visions of a two-state peace pact.
The difficult diplomacy reflected in some ways the intractability of a dispute that has foiled would-be peacemakers for decades, even though none of the actual elements of a final agreement was being discussed.
Quartet envoys met for a third straight day in New York to come up with a formula that would lead to direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The goal is to reach a comprehensive agreement that would address this week's three major issues, officials said.
The Palestinians would be allowed to deliver their letter of request Friday to the United Nations, but the Palestinians would not act on it for a year or would withdraw it at a later point. That would allow Abbas to save face and prevent an embarrassing defeat that might empower his party's rival faction, Hamas, which is considered a terrorist group by Israel and the United States.
The Palestinians could also go to the U.N. General Assembly, where they have overwhelming support, but would have to seek instead some form of intermediate upgrade that would stop short of a full recognition of statehood.
And the quartet, with Israel and the Palestinians' advance approval, would give the two sides a year to reach a framework agreement, based on Obama's vision of borders fashioned from Israel's pre-1967 boundary, with agreed land swaps. The statement would also endorse the idea of "two states for two peoples, Jewish and Palestinian," which would be a slightly amended version of Israel's demand for recognition specifically as a "Jewish state."
So far, neither side seemed willing to make such a dramatic concession, officials said. There was also some disagreement among the quartet with Russia expressing its displeasure with a number of EU and U.S. supported ideas, they said. And they cautioned that the agreement could cause the same conundrum at next year's U.N. General Assembly meeting if talks fail to advance by then.
Obama met on Tuesday with Prime Minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan of Turkey, once a close regional partner of Israel but lately an increasingly vociferous critic, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton discussed the Palestinian plan with Saudi Arabia's foreign minister.
In addition to international pressure, Obama was coming under fire from leading Republican hopefuls over his handling of the Mideast peace process.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Obama was part of the problem, criticizing him for demanding concessions from Israel and claiming that the president had emboldened the Palestinians to take their case to the United Nations.
"We would not be here today at this very precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama policy in the Middle East wasn't naive and arrogant, misguided and dangerous," Perry said in a speech in New York. "The Obama policy of moral equivalency, which gives equal standing to the grievances of Israelis and Palestinians, including the orchestrators of terrorism, is a very dangerous insult."
In a statement before Perry spoke, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also waded into the dispute and called the jockeying at the United Nations this week "an unmitigated disaster." He accused Obama's administration of "repeated efforts over three years to throw Israel under the bus and undermine its negotiating position."
In Congress, Republicans and Democrats expressed their opposition to the Palestinian effort and implored world leaders to vote against any U.N. resolution. Leading Senate voices on foreign policy have written to Latin American and African governments asking that they oppose the Palestinian action, and warning the Palestinians that they could lose millions of dollars in U.S. aid.
"U.S. foreign assistance is not an entitlement," Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said. "Assistance is not automatic."

Dana Ricci discusses her personal woes and successes of others when it comes to long-distance relationships.
Absence makes my heart want to burn your house down.
Well, not really. I just have this thing with long-distance relationships.
I spent the Spring 2011 semester studying abroad in Spain and I learned from my own experiences, as well as those of my Spanish-studying comrades, that Spain is where relationships go to die.
Or maybe it?s just the whole separated-by-an-ocean thing that cuts the throats of most relationships when one-half temporarily flees the country.
Or maybe it?s just any distance at all, be it a 10-hour flight, a 90-minute Megabus journey or a two-hour drive that causes some relationships to be lost at sea.
I can?t help but think back to my freshman year, when about a month into the semester, on any given night, the hallways of my all-female floor in Johnson Hall housed at least one girl having a late-night cryfest on the phone with her now-far-away significant other. Nosy floor-dwellers would begin placing hypothetical bets on whose relationship would stand the test of distance the longest.
In a way, the distance seems to create this two-relationship dynamic?one in the time spent together and one in the time spent apart, waiting to be together again. The time spent together is almost like a constant special occasion. A ?drop everything because my girlfriend is only in town every third full moon? kind of relationship.
The time spent apart requires attention and communication that compensates for not actually being in the physical presence of another person. This is the part that kills it for me. I feel at times it?s almost worse to be alone when you have someone who is not around than to be just plain alone.
It works quite well for some people, though. A friend of mine has been dating his girlfriend who goes to school in Boston all three years they have been in college. They alternate visiting each other in Philadelphia or Boston every three weeks.
?It?s taking the relationship and cramming into three days every three weeks,? he said. ?It?s fun to kind of have one entire weekend dedicated to a relationship.?
He said each time is like a vacation that they look forward to. Perhaps there is an anticipation in the times between that keep it going and make them the adorably happy couple they are.
?Maybe it?s a hardship for relationships, but it?s a blessing for friendships,? he said, explaining that spending time away from his girlfriend gives him time to spend time with his friends while he is at Temple.
So sure, the distance keeps those times spent together extra special. But what?s a relationship without those days spent playing Sonic and only exchanging grunts about passing the Doritos? Growing together sometimes takes, well, being together.
Of course, I may be one of those anti-distance people because of the fact that I can become angry with people much easier when they are far away (thus bringing me to my house-burning, mailbox-hitting peeved-ness). I have found some people who share this trait with me. I think it can be attributed to a sense of resentment we feel when those we care about aren?t around. They miss things that happen in our lives and have their own fun and happiness that doesn?t involve us. It?s frustrating and easy to take out on them.
And yeah, many long-distance-relationship people might be cranky because they don?t get to have sex whenever they feel like it.
So I won?t dismiss all geographically-challenged love. When I went to Spain, a few of my friends did a fine job of keeping their relationship going while they were away. And didn?t it work for Snooki and JWoww when the cast of the ?Jersey Shore? went to Florence?
So if you happen to be embarking on one of these long-distance adventures, try and remember that the time you spend apart is good for your personal development and independence. Maybe it?s the sign of a real and healthy relationship when the two parties can stay together through separation.
However, if you?re struggling with solely Skype dates or someone a bus ride away is trying to control your life and bring you down with their far-away blues, then perhaps its time to seek some local lovin?.

LOS ANGELES ? Homebuilder Lennar Corp. said Monday that its fiscal third-quarter profit fell 31 percent as it sold fewer houses than it did a year earlier.
Home deliveries fell partly by comparison with a period last year when many buyers were racing to get their home purchases completed in time to qualify for federal homebuyer tax credits.
Conversely, Lennar's new home orders in the latest quarter benefited from the comparison with softer orders last summer and rose 11 percent. That was the first quarterly increase in more than five years, excluding the first half of 2010, when new orders also rose due to the housing tax credits.
"Throughout our third quarter, we continued to see evidence that the consumer is beginning to return in earnest to the homebuilding market," said CEO Stuart Miller.
But he warned new-home demand remains constrained by strict lending requirements and weak consumer confidence.
This was the sixth consecutive quarter that the Miami-based homebuilder has turned in a profit, even with sales of new homes slowing after a lackluster spring.
New home sales fell in four out of the seven months between January and July, threatening a total even lower than 2010's, which would make 2011 the worst year for new-home sales on records dating back at least half a century.
On Monday, the National Association of Home Builders said its index of builder sentiment fell to 14 from 15 this month. Any reading below 50 indicates negative sentiment about the housing market.
New homes make up a small portion of sales but have an outsize impact on the economy. The builders' trade group says each new home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in taxes.
High unemployment, larger down-payment requirements and tougher lending standards are preventing many people from buying homes. And some potential buyers who can clear those hurdles are holding off, worried that home prices have yet to bottom out. Builders also are struggling to compete with the large number of foreclosed properties on the market.
Miller singled out buyers' financing hurdles as a major drag on new home sales.
He argued that banks have become too conservative in their lending standards, noting that Lennar customers who were denied a government-backed home loan over the past 18 months had an average FICO score of about 650.
"The logical extension of where we are is that we make only one loan for $200,000 to Warren Buffett and we will never have a default," Miller said, in a reference to the billionaire investor. "Unfortunately, we will also not have much of a housing market."
A scheduled rollback on Oct. 1 in the size of mortgages that government-controlled companies can buy or guarantee also will make it harder for homebuyers to obtain financing, the executive said.
Still, Miller predicted that Lennar would be profitable in the fourth quarter and for the full year, assuming market conditions remain stable.
One element of Lennar's profitable run is the builder's Rialto division, which buys troubled loans and properties from banks. The unit has been a key contributor to the company's bottom line.
In June through August, Rialto's operating earnings fell to $11.7 million from $18.5 million, but revenue climbed to $42.1 million from $38 million.
Lennar has operations in 17 states and is the third-largest homebuilder in the U.S., based on homes delivered last year.
The company reported net income of $20.7 million, or 11 cents a share, for the three months that ended Aug. 31, down from $30 million, or 16 cents per share, a year earlier.
That earnings figure matched the average expectations of analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue dipped 1 percent to $820.2 million from $825 million, but beat Wall Street's estimate of $794.4 million, according to FactSet.
Lennar shares rose 67 cents, or 4.9 percent, to close at $14.47 on Monday as the broader market sank.
The company's home deliveries fell 3 percent to 2,865 homes, while new orders rose 11 percent to 2,914 homes. Analysts estimated, on average, an annual increase of nearly 8 percent in orders, according to FactSet.
The average sale prices of homes Lennar delivered increased 3 percent to $247,000 from $240,000. Sales incentives rose to $33,600 per home delivered from $30,600 per home delivered in the prior-year period.
Lennar said its cancellation rate was 20 percent for the quarter, while backlog climbed 16 percent to 2,519 homes.
