NEW YORK (AP) ? Scarlett Johansson will tap into her feline side later this year when she plays Maggie the Cat on Broadway.

Producers on Thursday unveiled the Tony Award-winning Johansson in a revival of Tennessee Williams's "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." It will be Johansson's first time back since winning a Tony in the Arthur Miller play "A View from a Bridge" opposite Liev Schreiber in 2010.

Benjamin Walker, who starred in "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson," will play her husband Brick, Ciaran Hinds plays Big Daddy, and Debra Monk will be Big Mama. The production will be directed by Tony and Emmy Award-winner Rob Ashford.

On the news of the announcement, Johansson said: "I am so thrilled to return to Broadway and feel incredibly fortunate to be doing so with Rob Ashford and such gifted actors."

The new "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" will begin previews at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Dec. 18 and open on Jan. 17. It marks the play's fifth revival on Broadway and one four years after Anika Noni Rose played Maggie.

Johansson's films include "Lost in Translation," ''Match Point" and "We Bought a Zoo."

Dr. James Watson shared a Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA and was one of the first people to have his entire genome sequenced.

When scientists were looking for the first person to test a new, superfast way of deciphering someone's entire genetic blueprint, they turned to James Watson ? the guy who shared a Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA.

"They had to sequence someone, so they got me," he says.

The results helped solve a mystery: Watson had never understood why he had so much trouble controlling his blood pressure with beta blockers. "They put me to sleep," he says.

The sequencing revealed that he had genes that made him more sensitive than most people to the drugs. "Now I can take them once a week," he says, "so my blood pressure is better controlled now because of my genome."

This is one of the big benefits doctors expect to get from sequencing: a whole new way to figure out which drugs work for their patients; which don't; which are safe; and which are dangerous.

?

"The doctors of the future, when you start to prescribe a drug for which you have a genomic variation that would give you a side effect, a flag will pop up and say, 'Maybe you ought to, you know, consider another drug,' " says Robert Green, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School.

Overall, though, Watson didn't end up learning all that much from his DNA. "Really, nothing came up," he says.

Skeptics say that's probably the case for most people at this point. Sequencing gives you all 3 billion letters in your genome, but scientists still know so little about how to interpret the data that most people will get little, if any, useful information out of it.

That's one reason some scientists are sequencing themselves ? to learn how to use this flood of information.

When Michael Snyder, who chairs Stanford University's genetics department, decided to become his own sequencing guinea pig, the results were dramatic ? and shocking: Snyder learned he was at risk for Type 2 diabetes.

It didn't seem to make sense: Snyder had no family history of diabetes; he wasn't overweight. There was no reason he should get the disease. Still, just to be on the safe side, Snyder asked a colleague who specializes in diabetes to monitor his blood sugar levels. At first, she was skeptical.

"The person doing the test said, 'There's no way you're at risk for Type 2 diabetes.' And I said, 'Well, I don't think so, either. But my genome says there's something interesting about my glucose metabolism, so I think we should do this test,' " Snyder said.

So everyone was stunned when his blood sugar started rising ? and then kept rising. Within months, it spiked. They had literally watched him become a diabetic in real time.

"So in fact, my genome, then, did predict I was at risk for a disease, which, by following the various markers for that disease, I did discover I did get," Snyder said.

Snyder jumped on it. He completely transformed his diet and kicked up his exercise. After about six months, his blood sugar gradually fell back to normal.

"That's the power of genomics, is to help you catch things as early as possible. So, some people might say that actually, my genome saved my life," he said.

Stories like Snyder's are feeding the buzz about sequencing and raising the prospect that it could one day become as routine as running through your family history with your doctor, getting your blood pressure checked or testing your cholesterol.

"I think it's going to be part of the every day medicine sooner than most of us can actually imagine," Green says.

For example, genome sequencing could spot who's going to get breast cancer, escape prostate cancer or need to watch their heart. "I think it's one of the most exciting frontiers in science and society," Green says.

But even people pushing those frontiers acknowledge there are limits to what people want to know about themselves.

When Watson was asked to volunteer for sequencing, he had one condition: "I didn't want know its prediction for Alzheimer's," says Watson, who had watched his grandmother die from the incurable brain disease. "There's nothing you can do to prevent it, so why would you want to know?"

Watson told the geneticists they could tell him and even publicize everything else that showed up in his genes, except that.

That type of reaction isn't surprising, says James Evans, a geneticist at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "Your genome is a complex and not necessarily a real warm and fuzzy place," he says.

Some people will want to know everything. But a lot of people won't. And what do we do if we stumble across something we weren't looking for?

Plus, Evans says, there are plenty of chances for bad or misleading results that could end up doing more harm than good. "Medical tests have the power to help," Evans notes. But they also "have the power to confuse."

In Watson's case, the first interpretation of his genome indicated he should already be dead, killed by a terminal illness.

"It was a nasty condition. I purposefully didn't think about it," he says, "because I figured I would wonder why I wasn't sick. Well, it turns out I shouldn't have been." Doctors quickly realized they had misread his genome. Luckily, Watson hadn't gotten too worked up about the mistake.

But there are also potential drawbacks to getting it right.

Snyder got a glimpse of that himself. After sequencing revealed his high risk for diabetes, his wife tried to increase his life insurance. But because of that high risk, the price shot through the roof.

"So the bottom line is my life insurance ... essentially became prohibitively expensive," Snyder says.

Federal law bans health insurance companies and employers from penalizing people based on genetic information, but the law doesn't apply to life insurance or long-term care insurance ? leaving people like Snyder vulnerable to discrimination.

Despite that, Snyder is convinced sequencing has more upsides than downsides. And despite his false alarm, Watson agrees.

"I think many people would benefit from having their DNA told, and that would more than compensate for the occasional mistakes," he says.

Others aren't so sure. They wonder: Is it far too soon for most people to venture into the dark corners of their DNA?

Jake the rock was named after the late Jake Matijevic, a NASA engineer who passed away several days after Curiosity touched down on Mars. Matijevic played an instrumental role on each of NASA's rover missions. According to a report from NBC News, the rock appears to be similar to a rock (unnamed as far as we know) examined by the Mars Spirit rover eight years ago.

In a press release, NASA explained its plans. "In coming days, the team plans to touch the rock with a spectrometer to determine its elemental composition and use an arm-mounted camera to take close-up photographs. Both the arm-mounted Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer and the mast-mounted, laser-zapping Chemistry and Camera Instrument will be used for identifying elements in the rock. This will allow cross-checking of the two instruments."

This isn't the rover's first task on Mars. Since landing last month, the rover has been busy photographing solar eclipses. Researchers explain that the images may help them better understand the interior structure of Mars.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? University of Iowa researchers have determined that thigh size in obese people is a reason their hip implants are more likely to fail.

In a study, the team simulated hip dislocations as they occur in humans and determined that increased thigh girth creates hip instability in morbidly obese patients (those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40). The researchers propose that surgeons modify surgical procedures to minimize the chance of dislocation in obese patients and consider other designs for hip replacement implants.

"We have shown that morbidly obese patients' thighs are so large that they are actually pushing each other outward and forcing the implant out of its socket," says Jacob Elkins, a UI graduate student and first author of the paper published in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. "Studies have shown up to a 6.9-fold higher dislocation rate for morbidly obese patients compared to normal weight patients.

Total hip replacement gives mobility back to people who experience debilitating hip joint pain. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease (NIAMS), 231,000 total hip replacements are performed annually in the U.S. and more than 90 percent of these do not require follow-up repair or replacement. But when an implant fails, it is painful, and costly. Studies have shown that dislocation ranks as the most common reason for failed implants, according to Medicare hospital discharge data.

A hip implant is a ball-in-socket mechanism, designed to simulate a human hip joint. However, it lacks the connective tissue that stabilizes a normal hip joint, meaning the ball portion of the implant can sometimes "pop out."

Clinical studies point to an increased dislocation risk among obese patients with total hip replacements, but the reasons have remained unclear. Dislocation requires extreme range of motion, such as flexing at the waist. Given the reduced range of motion in the obese, why do they experience more dislocations?

Using a computational model he created to understand how a hip implant works in patients, Elkins and research collaborators analyzed 146 healthy adults and six cadaver pelvises. They examined the effects of thigh-on-thigh pressure on the hip implant during a wide range of movements from sitting to standing. With the ability to simulate movements in human bodies of varying sizes, the team could test different implants. They also looked at the various implants' performances in different body types. They used a hip-center-to-hip-center distance of 200 millimeters as a basis for their analyses of thigh girth for eight different BMIs, ranging from 20 to 55.

The research team ran computations to examine the joint stability of several different hip implants. They tested two femoral head sizes (28 and 36 millimeters), normal versus high-offset femoral neck, and multiple cup abduction angles.

The researchers report three main findings:

1) thigh soft tissue impingement increased the risk of dislocation for BMIs of 40 or greater;

2) implants with a larger femoral head diameter did not substantially improve joint stability;

3) using an implant with a high-offset femoral stem decreased the dislocation risk.

"The larger your legs are, the more force that goes through the hip joint," Elkins says. "It's a simple concept. When your thighs are real big, they push on the hips."

Surgeons treating obese hip implant patients can use the study findings to select better implant designs and modify their surgical procedures to minimize the chance of dislocation in obese patients, the researchers say.

"The number one thing surgeons can do is what is called a 'high offset femoral stem,'" says senior author Thomas Brown, UI professor of orthopaedic surgery, referring to the portion of the implant that attaches to the patient's upper thigh bone, or femur. "Basically, the implant's femoral stem is longer, so it effectively shifts the leg further away from the center rotation of the joint. The thighs then would need to move even further inward before they would abut one another and generate the forces necessary for dislocation."

The study was published online on Aug. 21. Elkins is in the UI's College of Engineering Biomechanical Engineering Program and the Carver College of Medicine's Medical Scientist Training Program.

Other authors are Matej Daniel, assistant professor at Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, and former Fulbright Research Scholar at UI Hospitals and Clinics; Douglas Pedersen, UI research associate professor of orthopaedic surgery; Bhupinder Singh, UI doctoral candidate in physical therapy; John Yack, UI associate professor of physical therapy; and John Callaghan, UI professor of orthopaedic surgery.

The National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration, and the National Center for Resource Resources funded the research.

It seems only appropriate that for 2012, the ninth annual Gnome Fest returned to its roots in the Nine Mile Forest near Wausau Wisconsin, back where it all began.? I?m a relatively new participant to Gnome Fest and got my introduction by serving as trail liaison for the past several years when the festival was held at the Levis Mound trail in Clark County.? Although never a registered participant, I watched, photographed, rode and helped as much as I could as a trail host.

I was looking forward to being a civilian gnome for first time this year.

As you can probably guess by the name and the poster, craziness is not in short supply at a Gnome Fest, but at the heart of the event are people that love mountain biking and riding and gathering together in a shared love of the sport. Initially when I served as trail host for the fest, I felt like a bit of an outsider. It seemed everyone else knew each other and I was just the local guy at Levis. That changed quickly though and now I feel like part of the great big family. Throughout the year, long after the dust has settled at the annual Gnome Fest, I seem to find myself riding with those same new friends. ?While the riding relationship last, I love how Gnomefest rekindles those friendships each year.

If you are an old school mountain biker like me, the fest sort of like a Midwest version of Pedro?s Fest from years gone by, but run a little looser.? There are a number of organized rides, and this year the women?s ride was lead by the first Womens Mountain Bike World Champion Jacquie Phelan! What other sport can you mix it up with world champions and hall of famers?

There are also night rides, morning rides, random derbies, the Death Race, a Dirt Cat and of course, the ever popular nighttime Dwarf Cycle race, the highlight of each Gnome Fest.? The potluck dinner, chili cook-off and home brew contest keep everyone fed and hydrated and tons of awesome door prizes ensure everyone goes home happy. ?During the awards ceremony and raffle, the kiddy beer pool is pure Gnome Fest, and just another way to add even more new friends to the my rider list.

Although the weekend forecast of cool temps and clear skies looked perfect, Mother Nature tossed in some rain, smack dab in the middle of the Dirt Crit, while riders were miles from the trail head.? No matter, most participants kept pedaling (often confused and going every-what direction) seeking out obscure check points in the maze of trails at Nine Mile.? None would finish in less than two hours. As in years past, I teamed up with friends to complete the event in a group, much more fun in my book. ?Surprisingly, we ended up third and scored some awesome sculptures by recycledartwerks.

All too soon, the weekend reached the final morning ride on Sunday. The last ride is typically done at a slow pace with lots of photo-ops. Those pictures will soon be shared in photo pools throughout the web to relive some of the weekend or perhaps entice new riders for the following year. After such a fun weekend with friends, there is nothing worse than having to break camp and saying goodbye to all the gnomies.

Unpacking at home is always a sobering reminder that another year will pass before we do it all again. ?The 9^th Gnomefest return to Marathon County was a a great time, and a chance to once again ride trail where it all started. I look forward to next year?s rumored stop at the phenomenal Nicolet Roche trail system. ?See you there?

BATON ROUGE -- The new leader of the LSU health-care system, working with Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration to make deep cuts to the public hospitals, earlier this year slammed the governor for slashing funding to the facilities.

"Yes, he is saving money. But to save money and lose your soul in doing so, I have to ask if that is the Christian way?" Frank Opelka wrote in a letter printed by The Advocate newspaper in February -- after midyear budget cuts hit university health programs.

Seven months later, Opelka is working side-by-side with the governor's health care secretary, Bruce Greenstein, to shrink far more spending on the safety net system of hospital and clinics that care for the uninsured.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Opelka said the newspaper letter was designed to draw attention to "our cut after cut strategy, which was not helping patients."

He said the Jindal administration isn't seeking such a strategy in the latest round of cuts, which Opelka is overseeing since his predecessor was ousted from the job after clashing with the administration over the budget reductions.

"I want us to be mindful of the impact. I don't think one cut after another is the best way to determine safety net care," said Opelka, LSU's executive vice president for health care and medical education redesign.

Opelka said the Jindal administration is pushing for collaborations with local community health providers to try to protect critical services and patient care.

"They don't want a cut strategy. They want a partnership strategy," Opelka said.

The Jindal administration has stripped a quarter of the health system's funding in response to a drop in federal Medicaid financing, and Jindal says LSU must change its model of providing services and embrace public/private partnerships.

The drop in funding is expected to reach more than $300 million in the next budget year that begins July 1.

In February, when Greenstein and Opelka's predecessor, Fred Cerise, were at odds over $34 million in cuts to the network of public hospitals and clinics, Opelka wrote that "this governor is slashing services to the most needy."

He said Jindal was "making changes that, were it not for the hope of Obamacare, are closing mental-health services, are limiting access to critical care and removing obstetrics care for the most needy."

The Republican Jindal opposes the federal health care revamp pushed by Democratic President Barack Obama and wants it repealed.

Cerise and the Jindal administration clashed when Cerise suggested provisions of the federal health overhaul law could help fill budget gaps in the LSU health care system.

I can't imagine someone being able to watch every keystroke as I write a post like this, but author Silvia Hartmann is writing a novel, and is welcoming you to watch her progress. Live and in real-time. Using a public Google Document, Hartmann is typing away on "The Dragon Lords", and the whole idea absolutely fascinates me. It's unlikely that I'll sit at my computer and watch her type, but I'll probably check in from time to time on how she's doing.

The group of folks bent on crafting a real-life version of Star Trek's "Holodeck" -- a virtual playground, essentially -- are getting official support from gaming hardware company Razer. That support means not only access to Razer's hardware but also the company's staff of trained professionals. The Project Holodeck team have already implemented Razer's "Hydra" -- a PC-based motion controller that originally shipped with Portal 2 -- into their work on Holodeck showcase game, "Wild Skies."

But that's not the only big news for Project Holodeck, as the team recently swapped Microsoft's Kinect motion tech for Sony's PlayStation Move motion tech. Project lead James Iliff told RoadtoVR.com, "The Kinect hardware is extremely lacking in fidelity. Every point the Kinect tracks is filled with unmanageable jitter, rendering the data useless for anything other than the most simple of interactions. We tried very hard to get around this with several software algorithms we wrote, to get multiple Kinects to communicate with each other, however this did not really make anything more accurate unfortunately." In place of Kinect, the team strapped a PlayStation Move setup to a Pro-Tec skateboard helmet, and combined that tracking with the Hydra's motion control and Oculus Rift's head-mounted display. The result is ... well, it's a person standing in a room with a whole bunch of electronics attached to their person. But also, it allows players to interact in a 3D environment -- from perception to engagement. The team's still got plenty of work ahead of them, as evidenced by their latest video (below), but it sounds like things are coming together more cohesively than before.

CHICAGO (AP) ? An angry Mayor Rahm Emanuel's appeal to the courts to end a six-day teachers strike in the nation's third largest city set off a new round of recriminations Monday, but did little to end a walkout that has left parents scrambling and kept 350,000 students out of class.

It might not matter. By the time a Cook County Circuit Court judge considers the issue, the city's teachers might well have voted to end the strike and recommend they agree to a tentative contract that labor and education experts ? and even some union leaders elsewhere ? called a good deal for the union.

"This was an enormously successful strike (thus far)," said Emily Rosenberg, director of the Labor Education Center at DePaul University in Chicago. "I've never seen solidarity like this among teachers."

The dust-up in court may never move past the 700-page brief filed by city attorneys that contends the strike is an illegal act that presents a danger to the health and safety of the district's students. Judge Peter Flynn set a hearing for Wednesday, a day after the union is set to meet for a second time to discuss an offer than includes pay raises and concessions from the city on the contentious issues of teacher evaluations and job security.

The filing was indicative of how the union has perceived Emanuel's handling of the negotiations, and that may be the biggest remaining point of contention between the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union. The union immediately condemned Emanuel's play in court, in which the city said "a vulnerable population has been cast adrift," as an act of vindictiveness by a "bullying" mayor who was attempting to "thwart our democratic process."

"It's another bullying tactic that, unfortunately, if he wants teachers back in the schools, he should have stayed away from that type of action," said Jay Rehak, a longtime high school English teacher. "It only incites, rather than tones down the rhetoric."

Both sides have only released summaries of the proposed agreement. Outside observers said the tentative contract appears to be a win on the merits for the union and its roughly 25,000 teachers. While teachers in San Francisco haven't gotten an across-the-board raise in years, for example, Chicago teachers are in line for a raises in each of the proposed deal's three years with provisions for a fourth. In Cleveland, teachers recently agreed to the same kind of evaluation system based in part on student performance that Chicago has offered.

"The district went past the halfway mark," said Kate Walsh, president of the National Council on Teacher Quality. "They got a pretty good deal."

Some union members in Chicago have praised the school district's move on what percentage of test scores will be factored into teacher evaluations, down from the 45 percent proposed to the 30 percent set as the minimum by state law. It also includes an appeals process to contest evaluations. The new evaluations will also be phased in over the length of the contract.

That issue has been at the center of the contract talks and was noted in the lawsuit filed Monday, as city attorneys argued the strike is illegal because state law bars the union from striking on anything but economic issues ? including evaluations. It's an issue that takes time to resolve, said David Quolke, president of the teachers union in Cleveland, where implementing a similar evaluation system is taking place over four years.

"They have a mayor, frankly, who chose confrontation over collaboration," Quolke said. "Many politicians look at getting things done quickly rather than getting things done correctly."

The tentative contract in Chicago calls for a 3 percent raise in its first year and 2 percent for two years after that, along with increases for experienced teachers. While many teachers are upset it did not restore a 4 percent pay raise Emanuel rescinded earlier this year, the contract if adopted will continue to make Chicago teachers among the highest-paid in the country. In Chicago, the starting salary is roughly $49,000 and average salary is around $76,000 a year.

While noting they stood in solidarity with their colleagues in Chicago, leaders of other teachers unions said that aspect of the deal looked good from afar. Ellen Bernstein, president of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation in New Mexico, said teachers in New Mexico can't negotiate salaries; in Albuquerque, the average teacher salary is roughly $43,000.

"It seems that they made gains, which was their goal," she said. "They did a good job coming to consensus on important issues."

The city also won some things from the union in the proposed settlement. Emanuel gets the longer school day in Chicago he wanted and principals will have say over who gets hired at individual schools, something the union fought. The district will be required to give some preference to teachers who are displaced and the school district will have to maintain a hiring list and make sure that at least half of hires are displaced teachers.

"This is the deal we got," union president Karen Lewis said Sunday.

The union and school leaders appeared headed for a resolution at the end of last week, saying they were optimistic that students would be back in class by Monday. But teachers meeting Sunday afternoon said they felt rushed after getting only a few hours to review a summary of the agreement worked out between the city and union leaders, and Lewis admitted for many teachers, the decision to wait until Tuesday to decide came down to a lack of trust in city hall and the school board.

Having had some more time to think it over, some teachers were optimistic the deal on the table was good enough to end the strike when the union meets again Tuesday afternoon.

"We made a lot of progress," said Susanne McCannon, who teaches art at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. "I'd like to be back in the classroom, but I want to be back in the classroom with the best situation possible."

Many people with scoliosis who capitulate to scoliosis surgery still end up in chronic or constant pain later in life. This is due to the fact that the scoliosis surgery is essentially a trade-off situation in terms of scoliosis treatment. A human spine has 24 vertebrae (26 if you count the skull and sacrum) that demonstrate independent motion. This independent motion allows us to maintain maximal flexibility throughout our life span. Our ability to maintain a good quality of life long-term depends highly upon these joints staying mobile. It is well known that as soon as any joint is immobilized, within two hours there is microscopic evidence of joint deterioration.

To use an analogy, the spine is like a gear system. In order to turn, bend forward, reach for something, or even walk, each of these 24 vertebrae has to move in order to accomplish said task. As single joints become immobile, whether through joint damage due to trauma or surgical fusion, the remaining mobile joints must compensate and take up that joint?s workload, which accelerates the rate at which subsequent joints deteriorate. This is exactly why when people have lumbar fusion surgery for a disc herniation, the next disc above or below nearly always deteriorates at a rapid rate, making repeat surgeries necessary.

In scoliosis surgery there are typically several joints that are fused together, making a spine with 24 moveable vertebrae now a spine with only 12-17 functional vertebrae. This lost range of motion can never be fully made up by the remaining mobile joints. Therefore, the individual usually experiences pain associated with joint deterioration, since joint and disc deterioration causes increased blood and nerve supply to grow into the immobilized joint, making the joint more hypersensitive to pain.

My intention with writing this article is not to browbeat people into avoiding surgery. However, I do think people don?t often consider the long-term ramifications of their decision. Having scoliosis surgery for a 100-degree scoliosis is a much different circumstance than selecting it for a 42-degree scoliosis. Of course age and other genetic and environmental factors are at play here. Also, realize that people who have scoliosis surgery still see their scoliosis get worse over time despite the fusions. This is where I believe that scoliosis exercises can have a beneficial impact of the quality of life of post-surgery scoliosis patients.

Several years ago I published a case series in which one of the patients was treated 18 years after having scoliosis surgery. At that time her scoliosis had increased to the point where it was nearly identical to the immediate pre-surgery measurement 18 years earlier. However, by participating in an exercise-based scoliosis therapy, I was able to help her get her scoliosis back down to the initial post-surgery measurement. This made an incredibly positive impact on her pain levels and daily function. Therefore, the point of this article is to tell people that even if they?ve already had scoliosis surgery, they are not necessarily doomed to their outcome if the outcome was not a positive one long-term. I frequently see these cases in my office around 17-25 years after the scoliosis surgery.

ABOARD A US MILITARY AIRCRAFT (AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the turmoil raging across the Muslim world is likely to continue into the days ahead, but he says the violence expected by the U.S. appears to be leveling off.

He said the Pentagon has "deployed our forces to a number of areas in the region to be prepared to respond to any requests that we receive to be able to protect our personnel and our American property."

He declined to provide more details on reports that the military may be moving additional military forces so they can respond to unrest in any of a number of regions of concern.

"I think our approach right now is to not do anything until we've been requested to do it by the State Department," Panetta told reporters traveling with him to Asia. But he noted that, "I think that we have to continue to be very vigilant because I suspect that ... these demonstrations are likely to continue over the next few days, if not longer."

Protests by furious Muslims erupted in countries around the world in recent days, with some spawning violence and even deaths over an anti-Islam video shot in California that denigrates the Prophet Muhammad. In places like Libya, Sudan and Tunisia, protesters stormed U.S. embassies, and an American fast food restaurant was burned in Lebanon.

In response, the Pentagon dispatched elite Marine rapid response teams to Libya and Yemen, but a team deployed to Khartoum on Friday was turned back when the Sudanese government objected.

Asked about Sudan's decision, Panetta said host countries have the right to reject such military deployments.

"My understanding is that they felt that they could provide sufficient security to be able to protect our embassy and our personnel there," said Panetta. "And you know, in many ways, as all of you know the primary responsibility for protecting embassies rests with the host country."

Known as a fleet antiterrorism security teams, the units were sent in response to violent protests in Khartoum where protesters tried to climb the walls of the U.S. Embassy, setting off a battle with police.

The Navy also moved two warships to positions off the coast of Libya. The two destroyers are largely meant as a show of force, but they carry Tomahawk missiles and can also be available for evacuations or other missions as needed.

The intensity of the anti-American fervor initially caught U.S. leaders by surprise, but in the last several days the Obama administration has deployed military units to shore up security in hotspots, and used diplomacy to call for calm and urge foreign governments to protect American interests in their countries.

It also has been unclear how much of the violence was spontaneously triggered by the film and how much of it was spurred on by anti-American militants using it as a tool to grow and enrage the crowds.

The al-Qaida affiliate in Yemen praised the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya in an online statement Saturday and called for more attacks to expel American embassies from Muslim nations.

Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, was killed Tuesday along with three other Americans, as violent protesters stormed the consulate in Benghazi. President Barack Obama has vowed that the attackers would be brought to justice, but has also stressed that the U.S. respects religious freedom.

The protests were set off by a low-budget, crudely produced film called "Innocence of Muslims," which portrays Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. A 14-minute excerpt of the film, which is both in English and dubbed into Arabic, has been available on YouTube, although some countries have cut access to the site.

Panetta was traveling to Asia, where he will visit Japan, China and New Zealand.

His visit comes amid escalating tensions in the region including tussles over several disputed islands in the East China Sea. It is Panetta's third trip to the region in the last 11 months, reflecting the Pentagon's ongoing effort to put a greater military focus on the Pacific region.
