(AP) ? The tightrope walk rocks on for the Jayhawks.

Kansas, the underrated, undervalued team that's been teetering on the edge of the tournament since before it even began, is now one of the last two left.

Tyshawn Taylor made two big free throws late, and All-American Thomas Robinson finished with 19 points and eight rebounds Saturday night to lift the Jayhawks to a come-from-behind 64-62 win over Ohio State in the Final Four ? a game Kansas led for a grand total of 3 minutes, 48 seconds.

After scoring the game's first bucket, Kansas didn't lead again until Travis Releford made two free throws with 2:48 left. That lasted for 11 seconds, but the Jayhawks (32-6), who trailed by as many as 13, overcame another deficit and finally held on against the Buckeyes (31-8).

"It's just been our thing all year, coming back," Robinson said. "I don't like doing it, but for some reason my team is pretty good when we're down."

More than pretty good. Kansas is one more magic act from bringing its second title in five years back to Allen Fieldhouse. It might take exactly that. The opponent is Kentucky, the big-time favorite to win it all, and a 69-61 winner over Louisville in the evening's first semifinal. The Wildcats are an early 6.5-point favorite.

"It's a dream to play the best team in the country, up 'til now, hands down, the most consistent," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "It's a thrill. And I think it's even more of a thrill for us, because I don't think anybody thought we could get here."

Taylor's two free throws with 8.3 seconds left gave Kansas a 64-61 lead, matching its biggest of the game. The Jayhawks intentionally fouled Aaron Craft with 2.9 seconds left. Craft made the first, then quickly clanked the second one off the front of the rim but was called for a lane violation.

Kansas dribbled out the clock and celebrated a win that played out sort of the way the whole season has in Lawrence.

With most of the experienced players from last year gone, Self at times wondered if this team was even tournament material. The Jayhawks still won the Big 12 title ? for the eighth straight time ? but came into the tournament as what some felt was an underrated No. 2 seed.

They played down to their billing in their second game, against Purdue, barely escaping with a 63-60 win that looked a lot like this game in the Superdome.

"It was two different games," Self said of the latest escape act. "They dominated us the first half. We were playing in quicksand it looked like. And the light came on. We were able to play through our bigs; we were able to get out and run, but the biggest thing is we got stops."

Kansas' next test will feature a coaching rematch between Self and John Calipari, who was with Memphis in 2008 when the Tigers missed four free throws down the stretch and blew a nine-point lead in an overtime loss to Mario Chalmers and the Jayhawks.

A big comeback. Sound familiar? This year's Jayhawks also overcame a 19-point deficit to win their final regular-season meeting against Missouri ? their long-time, SEC-bound archrival.

"It's a 40-minute game," Self said. "There's no 13-point plays. You have to grind it and get one stop at a time."

This was a heartbreaker for the Buckeyes, who came in as co-Big Ten champions and a slight favorite in a game ? a rematch of a 78-67 Kansas win back in December when Ohio State's All-American, Jared Sullinger, was not available.

Sullinger was there a-plenty Saturday night, but he struggled. He finished with 11 points on 5-for-19 shooting, no fewer than three of them blocked by Jeff Withey, the Kansas center who finished with seven swats. Sullinger also had 11 rebounds and 3 blocks, but the sophomore who gave up NBA lottery money to return and win a championship will go without for at least another year.

When the buzzer sounded, he plopped at midcourt, clearly pooped ? and maybe wondering how his team let this game slip away.

"These guys got tears in their eyes, blank stares on their faces," Sullinger said. "It's tough on me."

Ohio State-Kansas was billed as "The Other Game" of this Final Four ? garnering much less ink than the Kentucky-Louisville blood feud that preceded it ? and started off looking like every bit the undercard.

The Buckeyes built an early 13-point lead on the strength of the shooting of William Buford, who came out of a 13-for-44 tournament slump to lead the Buckeyes with 19 points on 6 for 10 from the floor. Kansas trailed 34-25 at the half and only a steal and layup before the buzzer prevented the Jayhawks from a season-low.

Things changed when Ohio State came out and promptly missed its first 10 shots from the field, while Deshaun Thomas ? the Ohio State big man in charge of shutting down Robinson ? headed to the bench with his third foul.

That opened things up for KU: A couple easy layups for Robinson and a kick-out to Elijah Johnson for a 3-pointer were part of a 13-4 run to open the half. It tied the game at 38 and set up for a nip-and-tuck finish between these No. 2 seeds, each of which were in the hunt for top seeding all the way up to Selection Sunday.

Releford finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks. Johnson had 13 points and 10 boards. Taylor finished with 10 points and nine assists ? not bad considering the time Craft spent glued to him much of the night.

Craft said he thought a quick brick and a rebound on the final free throw was his best chance to save the game. There wasn't much of an argument after he got called for the lane violation, however.

"There is no explanation," Craft said. "Apparently I crossed before it hit the rim. I just knew I had to miss it. I thought that would be the best way for us to get the ball back."

That end-game was set up when Releford made two free throws with 1:37 left to put KU ahead 60-59. Buford tried to take the ball to the basket on the next possession, but Withey swatted it away. Johnson followed with a layup ? hardly as dramatic as his game-winner against Purdue, but enough for a three-point lead, which seemed like a million for the Jayhawks in this one.

Not that the Jayhawks need a big lead ? or any lead.

"I think we're trying to make it fun for y'all," Robinson said. "Seriously, I wish it would stop. I mean, I'd feel better at the end."

Movie Review: Mirror, Mirror - Centreville, VA Patch

Mirror, Mirror is the first and lighter of two movies based on the tale of Snow White to be released this year. It's a charming, sweet, albeit flawed little confection, worth seeing if you love inventive production and costume design, but especially if you have a soft spot for the work of director Tarsem Singh, who supplies some moments of visual brilliance his fans have come to love.

When a movie lover walks into a film helmed by Singh, they might have certain expectations. This artistic, controversial director is known for visually stunning yet incomprehensible movies like The Fall, The Cell, and most recently, The Immortals. He became famous with the music videos "Hold On" by En Vogue, and "Losing My Religion" for REM, which won Best Video of the Year at the 1991 MTV Awards.

Mirror, Mirror has a cast lead by A-lister Julia Roberts and IT boy Armie Hammer (of The Social Network, J Edgar, and the upcoming The Lone Ranger) and exhibits Singh's unique sensibility, complete with fantastical visual landscapes, with help from his production designer Tom Foden, and Kabuki-esque costuming from longtime collaborator Eiko Ishioka, who passed away in January. His enthusiastic devotees maintain Singh can and will ultimately build a career represented by well-reviewed blockbusters that weave together his trademark visual palette with storytelling that holds together. They are rooting for him to find a vehicle that will make that happen. With Mirror, Mirror, the first film directed by him appropriate for kids, he does get pretty close.

There was much brouhaha about the previews, which displeased Singh and got lots of press. I now see why. I was driven into the theatre by mix of responsibility for my readers and a strong curiosity about what Singh would do with such a mainstream studio film. The previews made it look like a silly retread most moviegoers would give a pass. Actually, although it isn't nearly as funny as I thought it might be, and certainly very goofy in spots, the dialogue is clever, and should appeal to both children and adults with its mix of broad humor and more subtle adult dialogue, which will fly over kids' heads.

While the story is the expected girl power "I rescue myself, thank you" switch up, the characters played by Lilly Collins (Snow White), Armie Hammer (Prince Alcott), and a host of LP (little people) actors (as the seven dwarfs) are more fully developed than in the usual fairy tale fare.

Julia Roberts stars as the Evil Queen. I found her underwhelming, with less bite than I would have liked for someone keeping Snow White and a whole spellbound kingdom under her thumb. Perhaps it was so as not to scare younger viewers, but I found her character and its portrayal far less menacing than, say, Mother Gothel in the Disney cartoon Tangled. She seemed to back away from playing the murderous menace the Queen was supposed to be. I also found the inconsistent English accent Roberts used distracting. Since she's done well with accents before, I have to wonder what acting choice lead her to slip in and out of it so often.

As the villain of the film, she's serviceable, but she doesn't create a lasting impression that will put this role anywhere near her best work. Her costumes, however, are the stuff of dreams. Her gowns are to die for, which may explain why her subjects are starving, as we are told that's where all their tax money is going. Well, Queen, at least it shows in your clothes!

Lilly Collins and Armie Hammer are the real stars here. She charms, he amuses, and together they are a believably smitten duo. Their interactions with the other characters in the film, however, are where they both shine the most.

As you can imagine, if being a person of color means fighting the five great actors getting all the roles, being a little person actor in Hollywood means you must be the very best?and they have indeed brought together the best here, including Mark Povinelli as Half Pint (who has a burning crush on Snow White) Danny Woodburn as Grimm (sort of the Grumpy of his pals) and Jordan Prentice as Napoleon (the leader of the group). They are all memorable actors, each with impressive lists of other movie and TV show credits, and are thoroughly enjoyable here.

The film, clocking in at 1 hour and 35 minutes, moves along swiftly enough, always marked by Singh's unique brand of wild inventiveness, but with varying degrees of success. Some action involving supposedly dangerous life sized puppets juxtaposed with comedic music seems forced and blunted, while the most engaging moments are those with Snow White training and fighting with swords, or scenes with the fantastical environments Singh and his crew create, like the castle and dwarf cottage interiors or the Queen's magical alternate world.

Dark and creepy fairy tales are very in vogue, with Grimm and Once Upon a Time on TV, and the oft compared upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman all bringing the gruesome cautionary aspects of these stories back to the forefront. It's nice to see an alternative version of Snow White that is still watchable and optimistic and won't give little kids nightmares. Sometimes fairy tales can use a little froth. Snow might be a determined young lady on a mission, and may know how to handle a sword, but her gown and crown still take your breath away.

Speaking of costumes, Bjork called. She wants respect back for the time she wore that swan-inspired fashion at the Oscars? It was definitely inspiration for one of Snow's outfits. It's also clear Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday was an inspiration for Lilly Collins's styling in general, although her imposing eyebrows are reminiscent of a younger Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The metrosexual man inside me wants to mention the gorgeous long coat Armie Hammer wears and whips off during a sword fight. Why don't American men have access to great pieces like this for their wardrobe? (Oh, yeah, 'cause they wouldn't buy them. But I would!)

I urge movie fans looking for family fun at the multiplex for kids 7 and up to consider Mirror, Mirror as a possibility. Is it something you adult couples or pals looking for a great night of hanging out should run to with a passion at your earliest convenience? No. But for families who look for movies that inspire a child's imagination and eye for visual creativity while at the same time giving them something more sophisticated to enjoy, this could be just the ticket. Adult women who love fairy tales and pretty things will also find bits to appreciate here, as will movie lovers curious to see a more mainstream expression of Singh's filmmaking style.

Walking out of the movie, I broke into a discussion about the tiara in Mirror, Mirror with an 8-year-old girl. She didn't bring up the message of girl power or independent thinking, although it might be sinking into her brain somewhere. I figure with all the negatives in this world, there's nothing wrong with appreciating some of the more beautiful, sparkling things. I'm glad Tarsem Singh is the one given a chance to show them to her.

I was in New York last week.? I had an experience that made me think of the career success advice in Tweet 100 in my career advice book Success Tweets:? ?Care about what you do.? If you care a little, you?ll be an OK performer.? If you care a lot, you?ll be an outstanding performer.?

In the space of two days, I encountered two people ? one who cared a little, and one who cared a lot.? I didn?t meet either of them in person, but I could easily tell which one cared a little and which one cared a lot.? They were both housekeepers at the hotel where I as staying.

After the first night I was there the housekeeper clearly didn?t care a lot about her service.? While the room was clean, she didn?t replace the shampoo and towels that I used.? I had to call Housekeeping and ask them to send some more up when I arrived back at the hotel after my business day.? I was a little surprised as I usually get good service at this hotel ? and because I always leave a tip for the housekeeper.? I?ve worked for tips a lot in my life and know that they are an important supplement to a housekeeper?s salary.

The second day was a complete 180.? I arrived back at the hotel and the room was immaculate.? The housekeeper replaced all the towels and amenities.? The papers on my desk were squared up.? The two newspapers that I had left in front of the TV were placed nicely on an end table next to the easy chair.? And, the baseball cap I had with me in case of rain, was sitting on the back of the easy chair as if being displayed.? As soon as I opened the door I knew that someone had taken the time to make sure my room looked really good.? I also realized that the person who serviced my room that day really cared about her job.

Outstanding performance ? while not enough to guarantee your life and career success ? is necessary if you want to create the career success you deserve.?? That?s why it is at the heart of the career success model in my new book Climbing the Corporate Ladder.

I care about helping people create the life and career success they want and deserve.? I care a lot.? That?s why I wrote Success Tweets and I give it away for free.? That?s why I am wrote a series of blog posts explaining each of the 141 tweets in more detail and turned it into a book called Success Tweets Explained.? You can get both books for free by going to http://budurl.com/STExp.? I do this because I care.? I care a lot about helping you achieve the kind of career success you deserve.? And I know that this caring will pay off in me becoming an outstanding career success coach ? somebody who gives really great career advice.

When you care you do your very best.? This year marks the 50th anniversary of the film release of one of my favorite books: To Kill a Mockingbird.? There is a passage in that book that has always stuck with me.? It?s in Chapter 11 and is spoken by Atticus Finch, the father, played by Gregory Peck in the film.? He?s speaking to Scout, his daughter?

?I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.? It?s when you know you?re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.? You rarely win, but sometimes you do.?

It takes courage to care. Because when you care, you put yourself out there.? You do your best.? And doing your best can be a scary thing.? When you care, when you consciously do your best and fail, it is heartbreaking.? But at least you have the satisfaction of knowing you did your best.

One of my career success coaching clients had an experience like this recently.? He was up for a promotion to Senior VP.? He put his heart and soul into preparing for the series of interviews he had.? At the end of the interviews he told me that he knew in his heart of hearts that he did the best he possible could have in each interview.? He didn?t get the job.? He allowed himself to feel down about it for a day.? Then he approached each of the people who interviewed him and asked for candid feedback on what he could have done differently to secure the job.? He cared, he did his very best?? and didn?t win.? But he decided that he would learn something from his failure.? That?s taking personal responsibility for your life and career success.

I remember when I applied to graduate school at Harvard.? I decided that I was going to demonstrate to myself how much I cared by writing the very best application I could.? I wasn?t going to let myself off the hook if I didn?t get accepted by saying, ?I could have written a better application, but I just didn?t spend the time I should have.?

When I put my application in the mailbox ? we still did quaint things like that back in the old days ? I was proud of what I had written.? I knew it was the very best I could do.? I was also frightened because I knew that my best might not be good enough.? After all, both of my other degrees were from state schools.? Who was I to think that those kind of credentials would get me accepted at Harvard?

I cared about the quality of my application, so I did the very best I could.? The story in this case has a happy ending.? I was accepted and got my degree.? Even if I had not been accepted, I would have been proud of myself because I cared enough to write the best application I could, and I dared enough to admit it to myself.

The common sense career success coach point here is simple.? Successful people are proud of what they do.? They care.? They do their very best.? It doesn?t matter if they are housekeepers at a hotel, or VPs in a Fortune 100 company.? They follow the career advice in?Tweet 100 in Success Tweets.? ?Care about what you do.? If you care a little, you?ll be an OK performer.? If you care a lot, you?ll become an outstanding performer.?? Does your work show that you care?? Or does it reflect an ?it?s good enough? attitude?? Take it from a career success coach, if you want to create the life and career success of which you are capable, make sure that how much you care shows through in every single piece of work you do.

That?s the career advice I took from seeing two vastly different approaches to doing a mundane job like being a hotel housekeeper.? What do you think?? Please take a minute to share your thoughts with us in a comment.? As always, thanks for reading my daily musings on life and career success.? I value you and I appreciate you.

Europe rights body blasts NATO over migrant deaths

BRUSSELS (AP) ? A leading European rights watchdog is condemning NATO and Western navies for not coming to the aid of a boatload of migrants adrift in the Mediterranean Sea during last year's military campaign against Libya.

A Council of Europe committee said in a report released on Thursday that 63 of the 72 people on board perished when the boat was allowed to drift for weeks without assistance after its engine failed.

The report accused NATO of not being "very approachable with regard to requests for search and rescue operations."

NATO warships were patrolling the area at the time, enforcing an arms embargo against Libya. The alliance has rejected the accusations, saying its ships rescued hundreds of people in the area of operations.

FreedomPop plans to give away mobile internet, still make money somehow

Image
"Freemium" mobile broadband outfit FreedomPop has pulled back the curtain on how it plans to make money while giving away 4G internet. In an interview with GigaOm, Marketing VP Tony Miller revealed that once it has got enough consumers hooked on the gratis data, his company will start selling premium features, potentially including a VoIP solution for the network, now supplied by Clearwire after the collapse of LightSquared. The company will also charge a penny for every megabyte used over the free monthly allowance (currently pegged at 1GB) and build a social network where more data can be earned and traded between friends. Alongside the WiMAX shell for the iPhone, we can also expect to see an iPod Touch edition, USB dongle and mobile hotspot arrive before the network's launch. The company doesn't have too long to iron out the kinks in the business plan however, as it'll go live in the third quarter of 2012.

Many billions of rocky planets in habitable zones around red dwarfs in Milky Way

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A new result from ESO's HARPS planet finder shows that rocky planets not much bigger than Earth are very common in the habitable zones around faint red stars. The international team estimates that there are tens of billions of such planets in the Milky Way galaxy alone, and probably about one hundred in the Sun's immediate neighbourhood. This is the first direct measurement of the frequency of super-Earths around red dwarfs, which account for 80% of the stars in the Milky Way.

This first direct estimate of the number of light planets around red dwarf stars has just been announced by an international team using observations with the HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile [1]. A recent announcement, showing that planets are ubiquitous in our galaxy used a different method that was not sensitive to this important class of exoplanets.

The HARPS team has been searching for exoplanets orbiting the most common kind of star in the Milky Way -- red dwarf stars (also known as M dwarfs [2]). These stars are faint and cool compared to the Sun, but very common and long-lived, and therefore account for 80% of all the stars in the Milky Way.

"Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40% of all red dwarf stars have a super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet," says Xavier Bonfils (IPAG, Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Grenoble, France), the leader of the team. "Because red dwarfs are so common -- there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way -- this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone."

The HARPS team surveyed a carefully chosen sample of 102 red dwarf stars in the southern skies over a six-year period. A total of nine super-Earths (planets with masses between one and ten times that of Earth) were found, including two inside the habitable zones of Gliese 581 and Gliese 667 C respectively. The astronomers could estimate how heavy the planets were and how far from their stars they orbited.

By combining all the data, including observations of stars that did not have planets, and looking at the fraction of existing planets that could be discovered, the team has been able to work out how common different sorts of planets are around red dwarfs. They find that the frequency of occurrence of super-Earths [3] in the habitable zone is 41% with a range from 28% to 95%.

On the other hand, more massive planets, similar to Jupiter and Saturn in our Solar System, are found to be rare around red dwarfs. Less than 12% of red dwarfs are expected to have giant planets (with masses between 100 and 1000 times that of Earth).

As there are many red dwarf stars close to the Sun the new estimate means that there are probably about one hundred super-Earth planets in the habitable zones around stars in the neighbourhood of the Sun at distances less than about 30 light-years [4].

"The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the Sun," says St?phane Udry (Geneva Observatory and member of the team). "But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely."

One of the planets discovered in the HARPS survey of red dwarfs is Gliese 667 Cc [5]. This is the second planet in this triple star system and seems to be situated close to the centre of the habitable zone. Although this planet is more than four times heavier than Earth it is the closest twin to Earth found so far and almost certainly has the right conditions for the existence of liquid water on its surface. This is the second super-Earth planet inside the habitable zone of a red dwarf discovered during this HARPS survey, after Gliese 581d was announced in 2007 and confirmed in 2009.

"Now that we know that there are many super-Earths around nearby red dwarfs we need to identify more of them using both HARPS and future instruments. Some of these planets are expected to pass in front of their parent star as they orbit -- this will open up the exciting possibility of studying the planet's atmosphere and searching for signs of life," concludes Xavier Delfosse, another member of the team (eso1210).

Notes

[1] HARPS measures the radial velocity of a star with extraordinary precision. A planet in orbit around a star causes the star to regularly move towards and away from a distant observer on Earth. Due to the Doppler effect, this radial velocity change induces a shift of the star's spectrum towards longer wavelengths as it moves away (called a redshift) and a blueshift (towards shorter wavelengths) as it approaches. This tiny shift of the star's spectrum can be measured with a high-precision spectrograph such as HARPS and used to infer the presence of a planet.

[2] These stars are called M dwarfs because they have the spectral class M. This is the coolest of the seven classes in the simplest scheme for classifying stars accordingly to decreasing temperature and the appearance of their spectra.

[3] Planets with a mass between one and ten times that of Earth are called super-Earths. There are no such planets in our Solar System, but they appear to be very common around other stars. Discoveries of such planets in the habitable zones around their stars are very exciting because -- if the planet were rocky and had water, like Earth -- they could potentially be an abode of life.

[4] The astronomers used ten parsecs as their definition of "close." This corresponds to about 32.6 light-years.

[5] The name means that the planet is the second discovered (c) orbiting the third component (C) of the triple star system called Gliese 667. The bright stellar companions Gliese 667 A and B would be prominent in the skies of Gliese 667 Cc. The discovery of Gliese 667 Cc was independently announced by Guillem Anglada-Escude and colleagues in February 2012, roughly two months after the electronic preprint of the Bonfils et al. paper went online. This confirmation of the planets Gliese 667 Cb and Cc by Anglada-Escude and collaborators was largely based on HARPS observations and data processing of the European team that were made publicly available through the ESO archive.

Finance Talking ? Blog Archive ? Kasich, Mineral Severance Taxes ...

When John Kasich ran for governor, he floated the idea of gradually eliminating the state income tax. Even normally tax-averse people questioned whether it?s feasible (yours truly was not among them).

Well, it?s just a bit more feasible than it was thanks to the exciting prospect of Ohio becoming a major fossil fuels producer ? if Ohio gets its tax structure in this area right. That doesn?t seem possible as long as the opposition to any kind of restructuring which involves raising a tax ? even if there are offsetting or greater reductions elsewhere ? holds sway, as is apparently the case at the moment.

The following is part of an email I sent to a gentleman in a Tea Party organization who is opposing Kasich?s plan to increase mineral severance taxes to a level comparable but still below other states, and to offset any additional tax receipts with income tax cuts:

? (you are) working against what appears to be a very sensible plan by Gov. Kasich to increase resource severance taxes to a level somewhat below other states in return for desperately needed income tax reductions.

I COMPLETELY don?t get it, and the arguments I?ve seen against what Kasich wants aren?t compelling at all. Got any new ones?

Your statement in a recent email that ?Right now the Governor wants to raise taxes without committing to offsetting reductions in personal income tax? is directly denied by the Kasich admin, which states in its two-page ?key points? document that it is ?making sure tax changes are revenue neutral.? You need to prove that they?re not telling the truth before convincing me that they?re not committed to what they say they?re committed to. What about ?All new revenue from oil companies is used to cut income taxes? don?t you understand?

If anything, I would suggest that the guy who helped lead the nation to its last balanced budget and real national annual surplus deserves better than dismissive doubts about his intent to keep his word ?

If the argument is ?we want bigger income tax cuts than additional revenues raised, I would get that. But that?s not what I?m seeing. What I?m seeing is ?Don?t raise any kind of tax ever, no matter how much you cut others.?

Here is the full text of Team Kasich?s ?Key Points? and ?Myths vs. Facts? document:

The Income Tax Cut
Key Points

Ohio?s income taxes are too high and must be lowered to create jobs. We need to lower income taxes in order to create a jobs-friendly climate in Ohio.

  • According to the Tax Foundation, Ohio?s combined state and local income tax burden is among the highest in the nation?in nearly the top third.
  • Ohio?s combined state and local income tax burden per capita is among the highest also?in the top quarter.

Lowering income taxes helps small businesses create jobs. Small businesses hire half of Ohio?s private sector workforce and 75 percent of small businesses pay all their taxes through the income tax, not the business tax. Therefore, lowering income taxes frees up money for small businesses to invest back into their businesses so they can succeed and expand.

All new revenue from oil companies is used to cut income taxes. None of the new revenue from oil companies will go to government. It will all go to taxpayers.

  • $1 Billion by 2016: Between 2012 and 2016 Ohio taxpayers could see up to $1 billion in cumulative tax cuts.
  • $500 million annually: When we hit peak production, Ohio taxpayers could see $500 million in tax cuts every year. That?s approximately a 5 percent income tax cut.

Ohio?s tax system for oil companies is completely outdated. Oil companies? taxes are currently two- tenths of one percent?20 cents?on a $107 barrel of oil. They?re so low because Ohio has never been a major oil producer and our 40-year-old oil company tax never envisioned the explosion in oil and gas production we?re seeing now.

  • Oil companies will take in a total of up to $53 billion by 2016: Between 2012 and 2016 it?s estimated that oil companies? cumulative gross income could be between $45 and $53 billion?just on Ohio oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids.
  • Taxes are eliminated for small gas producers: Almost all of Ohio?s small, conventional natural gas producers (90 percent or 44,000 wells) will have all of their severance taxes eliminated altogether.
  • There?s no change for conventional oil producers: Small, conventional oil producers would see no change in taxes?they?d stay at the current, low 20 cents-per-barrel tax.
  • Oil companies can break even first, then pay the new standard rate: Horizontal wells get up to two- years at the initial low 1.5 percent rate to break even before the standard 4 percent rate kicks in.

Even Ohio?s new rates will be lower than other states, preserving our competitive edge.?Others state with shale formations or new oil industries?West Virginia, Texas and North Dakota?will all still have higher severance tax rates than Ohio. Though Pennsylvania has no severance tax, it does have a state impact fee, but it lacks Ohio?s large expected amounts of high-value natural gas liquids.

Who deserves low taxes: Ohioans or out-of-state oil companies? The question isn?t whether or not there will be low taxes. We have low taxes right now, but they only benefit the out-of-state oil companies that ship those benefits out-of-state to their out-of-state investors and shareholders. It?s better for Ohio if those benefits remain in Ohio to benefit Ohioans, who will spend that money in Ohio and help rev-up Ohio?s economy.

Bottom Line: Who should have low taxes, out-of-state oil companies or Ohioans?

MYTH v. FACT

1. Myth: Raising severance taxes will raise prices for consumers and for gasoline.
FACT: This is a misconception. Like any other business, oil companies pass on their costs of doing business?including the cost of taxes?to whomever buys their products. However, because oil companies will ship most of their products out of Ohio to users around the nation and even around the world, their costs of doing business are shipped out of state also, to be spread out and diluted over a wide, wide range. This is why Texas and Alaska?which have higher severance taxes than Ohio?have very low in-state tax burdens on their residents: the cost of their high severance taxes are passed on and diluted across a range of out-of-state interests instead of being paid for by Texas and Alaska residents. In fact, neither Texas nor Alaska has any income tax at all.

2. MYTH: Raising taxes will hurt the industry?s ability to grow in Ohio.
FACT: That?s just not true. Ohio?s taxes on oil companies will be lower than other competing states with new oil industries. Moreover, oil companies have announced $1.4 billion in new investments in just the last month. In fact, Chesapeake announced a $900 million investment on Tuesday, March 13, after the governor?s income tax cut plan was already widely known. The amount of money the oil companies stand to make in Ohio, and our comparatively low taxes, make our state a very attractive place to do business.

3. MYTH: It?s unfair to cut taxes on the backs of a single industry.
FACT: Actually, it?s unfair for any single industry to enjoy disproportionately low taxes, as does the oil industry in Ohio today. We should always seek to make taxes both low and fair. Neither Texas nor Alaska has an income tax thanks to their high severance taxes. The oil industry thrives in both states.

4. MYTH: Why do we want to raise taxes on an industry before we even know if it will be successful?
FACT: We agree, which is one reason why we didn?t do what Pennsylvania did and we didn?t impose a state impact fee on the industry. Oil companies will only pay taxes on what they produce and sell. If there?s no oil, then they won?t pay anything.

5. MYTH: New severance tax revenue should go to fund government, not income tax cuts.
FACT: Ohio governments don?t have revenue problems, they have spending problems. Instead of seeking new revenue streams to support high costs, state and local government should be working to find innovative ways to reduce costs so they can reduce taxes and become more jobs friendly.

6. MYTH: Isn?t it anti-Republican to raise taxes on businesses?
FACT: Cutting taxes on small businesses is classic, pro-growth economic policy. Making sure tax changes are revenue neutral and don?t go to government is classic, conservative fiscal policy. Cutting taxes for Ohioans instead of giving the benefits of low taxes to out-of-state oil companies who will ship those benefits out-of-state isn?t conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat, it?s pro-Ohio.

Boeing looks at Latin America, sees sales - Crain's Chicago Business

(Reuters) ? The world's two largest planemakers laid out forecasts for Latin America on Tuesday, where they see a market for 100 new commercial planes or more yearly for the next two decades as consumer spending expands with economic growth above the global average.

Airbus, a unit of EADS, sees a total market in the region for some 2,000 commercial aircraft, worth $197 billion, over the next 20 years, said Rafael Alonso, the top executive for Latin America at Chile's FIDAE regional air show.

Boeing Co. has a more ambitious projection. It sees 2,500 new commercial planes in the region by 2032, requiring an investment of $250 billion, said Van Rex Gallard, the head of sales for the region.

The trans-Atlantic rivals delivered a combined total of more than 1,000 jetliners in 2011 for the first time, with about 6 percent destined for Latin America.

Boeing was in Santiago showcasing its 787 Dreamliner before it starts delivering the aircraft by year end to Chile's flagship carrier LAN Airlines , which will integrate 32 of the model within the next 10 years.

LAN is expected to complete its takeover of Brazil's TAM in early May to create one of the world's largest carriers, with flights to 115 destinations stretching from Frankfurt to Sydney.

LAN said it would begin flying the 787 on its routes to Santiago, Buenos Aires, Lima, Los Angeles, Madrid and Frankfurt.

For its part, Airbus is not currently in negotiations to sell its A380 in Latin America, Alonso said.

bizmatcenter.org ? Kids and Teens Encounter A lot of Issues in the ...

Write-up by Saira

What?s it like to be a kid these days with all the difficulties that experience them when contemplating their foreseeable future? When kids are in their pre-teenager ages, this is not a thing that typically worries them, but it does concern moms and dads. Every stage in life sets oneself up for the next stage, so it is essential for young children to have a strong groundwork with every single action they take in life. A neglected kid as a child doesn?t stand a lot of a opportunity to grow in a good course. Possessing constructive influences in their lives for the duration of the years ahead of school will set a great basis once they phase foot within their very first classroom where they will begin to kind their bonds with other young children who are also commencing their trek in the direction of adulthood. Considering about adulthood at this age would seem a little bit premature, but if a mum or dad requires their youngsters potential significantly, their likelihood of success is considerably higher. This is not declaring that children need to increase up more rapidly and not be children, simply because that is as crucial, if not much more essential. What is important is to allow a child to mature commonly, whilst recognizing that each section in their life is portion of what molds them into the grown ups we meet nowadays. As well a lot of children are allowed to be the ?boss? in their homes.
