Living Wills Determine Who Will Make Choices When You Cannot

This article has been viewed 8 times.

Many people are questioning what they want in the way in which of legal paperwork to make sure that, within the event of incapacity, their needs are identified and adopted relating to potential finish-of-life decisions. Advance directives are a set of documents which are used to put out a clear chain of command to present selections makers steerage as to the individual?s needs as they relate to the kind of care desired in a disaster . It is a way to direct the decision maker about what a person wants and does not want, should they be unable to make their needs clear.

(AP) ? Those cute mail-order chicks that wind up in children's Easter baskets and backyard farms have been linked to more than 300 cases of salmonella in the U.S. ? mostly in youngsters ? since 2004.

An estimated 50 million live poultry are sold through the mail each year in the United States in a business that has been booming because of the growing popularity of backyard chicken farming as a hobby among people who like the idea of raising their own food.

But health officials are warning of a bacterial threat on the birds' feet, feathers, beaks and eggs.

"Most people can tell you that chicken meat may have salmonella on it," said Casey Barton Behravesh of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "But surprisingly, we found many people are not aware that live chicks and chickens can spread salmonella to people."

Since 2004, at least 316 people in 43 states got sick in an outbreak tied primarily to one mail-order hatchery. Health officials believe thousands more illnesses connected to the business were probably never reported.

No one died, but three dozen people were hospitalized with bloody diarrhea or other symptoms. The illnesses were detailed Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach pain but is rarely fatal. It is most dangerous to very young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. The infection is usually contracted from food, but live animals can transmit it, too, because the bacteria can be in their feces.

Salmonella outbreaks have been linked to hatcheries for more than 50 years. And health officials have long warned that people can get salmonella from touching chickens ? especially children, who tend to put their fingers in their mouths. Indeed, the CDC says children under 5 shouldn't be allowed to touch chickens at all.

Health officials also advise people not to bring birds into their homes and to wash their hands thoroughly after handling live poultry.

About 20 hatcheries mail live chicks overnight in the U.S., supplying not only feed stores and farms but amateurs with backyard coops. The mail-order houses have been seeing record sales in recent years.

"It's all part of this greener, healthier lifestyle," said Behravesh, a veterinary epidemiologist.

Jonah McDonald, a 32-year-old Atlanta man who keeps three hens and insists a backyard egg tastes better, said he does not know of anyone who has gotten salmonella from handling chickens.

"The kids in my neighborhood come over and feed scraps to my chickens," he said. "It's a real community thing."

The CDC described an eight-year investigation into salmonella illnesses, with more than 80 percent of the cases tied to a single hatchery in the western U.S. While CDC officials refused to identify the business, a previous report on the investigation by the health agency indicated it is in New Mexico.

Investigators interviewed victims and concluded many had caught salmonella from touching chicks or ducklings, often at home. From there, most of the illnesses were traced to the hatchery.

Behravesh said the hatchery has taken steps to curb the spread of salmonella ? including replacing equipment, adopting new egg-cleaning procedures and vaccinating chickens ? and is not considered a health threat. She said she was not aware of any fines or penalties against the business over the outbreak.

During the eight years studied, the annual number of illnesses linked to the hatchery ranged as high as 84, with 29 cases last year and only one so far in 2012.

Centsational Girl ? Blog Archive ? Operation Window Seat

As if we didn?t have enough projects going on around here between the hall bathroom remodel and the Alma project we decided last week to start yet another home improvement project, otherwise known as Operation Window Seat.?

We?re making some changes to the kids? playroom space, turning it into a library/study instead since they?re getting older now and in elementary school.? The space is narrow measuring 9 feet wide and I?ve always loved the idea of building a window seat in here and pulling up a table in front of it for homework, reading, games, art, etc.?

operation window seat

I thought about adding bookshelves around the windows but that felt too cramped so we?re going with just a basic window seat + cushion + pillows combo along the bottom that will add some extra seating and storage up against this wall.?

And let?s face it.? What?s better than a casual and cozy built in window seat with throw pillows galore, I ask you.?

We decided to use IKEA cabinets to create our window seat and last weekend Matt made the three hour round trip (driving + purchasing = 3 full hours!).? The idea to use cabinets to form the base came from Aubrey + Lindsay?s brilliant window seat in their kitchen.? We originally thought we?d have to build the whole thing ourselves from scratch but then I remeasured and did some more research and found out three 36? x 24? x 15? Akurum cabinets would fit the space perfectly, so I was sold.??

ikea refridgerator cabinet

The cabinet is 15? in height so we can build a base and add a cushion to bring it up to a proper seating height at 18 ? ? 19 inches max.? Unfortunately we found out after Matt returned home that the stock clerk supplied him with the birch and not the white finish cabinet frames (grrrr!) but instead of making the trip again and exchanging them, I?ll solve the problem with a little primer and paint.?

We?re off to a good start so far seeing how the three refrigerator upper cabinets fit the width of the room perfectly ? they?ll just need to be screwed together and trimmed out on the sides.

?three cabinets on floor

?

Most of the cabinet frame won?t be visible anyway since the cabinet doors (which you buy separately ? strange but true) are full overlay and those are white, and the top will be covered by a cushion.

white ikea cabinet doors

?

We also have to build a base that allows for air flow from the heating vent and attach the doors.? Then I?ve got to find some 2? foam and sew a cushion cover for it too, plus add a bunch of cozy pillows for comfort and color.?

build base etc

?

For the venting issue, I?m kind of in love with the idea of constructing a base that has a decorative curve in the front like this built in seat shown below.?

We?ll be working on this project over the next week or two, hoping to finish it up soon, I?ll keep you posted!? Any of you having visions of built in window seats dancing in your heads?? They?re pretty charming right?

Become The Villain Or Die The Hero

((Way longer than I planned this to be, ideas kept coming to me as I wrote and then I had to end it at some point. But, enjoy this short story.))

Where do I begin? Most would say the beginning, but for me the middle and the end are what matter the most. My name is James Turn and I'm a very normal man with very normal goals and a job that isn't quite the norm. I'm a detective. I was a detective. I didn't really solve murder cases or anything, I was IA. Internal Affairs. I watched the watchmen. Everything was going the way it usually went, harassment complaints against cops. Often by some lowlife who thinks they'll get money from the city. On my way to check out a complaint against a fellow detective I got a call from a friend of mine. They needed help and they needed it bad. My arrival at their home was enough to get me to draw my weapon. The door was open, lights were flickering, a window was busted and I could smell burnt rubber in the street. Yeah, something went down. I entered the house, room by room I looked for signs of life. Nothing. Then there was a sharp pain in the back of my head and things went black.

I woke up in the hospital. It had been days, weeks, I can't remember. I couldn't remember a lot. I tried to stand but my legs buckled and I went crashing to the floor. A nurse entered to see what the commotion was. I'd be a cliche if I said I thought she was angel, but damn. She was Hispanic, maybe Italian, five foot and two inches, hourglass shape that wasn't diminshed by her scrubs one bit and black silky hair. If only she was one of those nurses most men fantasize about. "Are you okay?" She asked me, coming to my aid to help me back into bed. "I'll be fine." I told her, I didn't want her thinking I couldn't handle myself. "I was hoping you would wake up one day." The nurse said to me, it made me feel good to know that some stranger was rooting for me.

"Semper Fi." She then said, "What?" I wasn't sure what she meant. "You were a soldier?" She asked me, but I couldn't answer that question myself. "Um... what?" Soon that would become my favorite word. "Here." The nurse grabbed me by the hand, she guided my eyes down to the tattoo on my forearm. The Eagle, Globe and Anchor. I was a marine. "The memory will come back, it happens when you take trauma to the head like that sometimes. You're lucky it's just memory loss. You could have been out for the rest of your life." She told me, her words causing the pain I had felt that fateful to come back.

I took a bump, someone tried to take me out or I was just very clumsy. "I'm Angela." The nurse said to me, the pathetic romantic in me homing in on the fact that she had the word angel in her name. "I'm... uh... I can't remember." I responded, almost ashamed of myself.

"Oh! Let me get your files, I can tell you just who you are." The beautiful Angela said to me before she left the room. Once she left I finally noticed the others that shared the room with me. An old man, a teen and a man that was probably about my age. "Casanova." The old man said, prompting the other two patients to laugh. "I'm sure you'll be getting her number soon, get her out of that nurse outfit, right?" The teen said to me, "I'll try." I told him with a laugh.

"Remarkable!" I heard someone shout from the hallway, footsteps were approaching. Several people. All of them entered the room and wasted no time in crowding around me and staring. "I thought you would never wake up." One man said, he was blonde and a bit of an accent. German maybe. He was a doctor. He was THE doctor. "Check his head." The doctor told the others, one of the junior doctors lifting the bandage on my head to check my wound. "Uh.. he's healed."

"What?" I asked, "Wait... what?" The German doctor asked, it was starting to become the question that I'd have everyone asking soon. My head wound was gone, but that didn't explain the pain I felt. "This is amazing. You're a medical anomaly. A miracle." The German doctor said to me, "Someone get me all the information that we have on this man."

It wasn't much and that made my life harder than it had to be. I assumed the hospital had the information on me they should have had, but Angela never came back. And then I could smell it. Smoke. Fire. The fire alarms went off, everyone wasn't sure what to do at first until someone yelled, "Fire!" There you go. Now everyone was doing what they had trained for. Get the patients to safety.

I was given a wheelchair, a new nurse becoming my driver for the evening. She was pretty, but she was no Angela. As she pushed down the hallway another nurse pushed the old man from my room in his own wheelchair. "Some luck. You wake up and someone puts something the microwave that they sholdn't have." He said to me, "We'll be fine." I told the old man, "You'll be fine. My time is almost up. Failing heart, one working kidney, my legs barely work. I'm not pleasing the wife much either in here." He said, laughing. Smiling. For a man that little time left he sure was happy. "You're young and you're healing." He continued, "You have great things to do here. God put you on this planet to change it."

Great. He was preaching. "I doubt it." I told the old man, "You just don't know it yet." The old man said, "People like you who are given a second chance have many choices but so few." He said, "I don't understand." I told the man, as we neared the front entrance of the hospital. "You can either live to become the villain or die the hero, my son." Foreshadowing ass old man. Wasn't sure which would come true, but why the hell couldn't things go back to normal? "Ah, I get'cha." I had wished I didn't.

"No matter which way you go you'll do great things and change the world for better or for worse. And, the person that you are now will cease to exist." I didn't have a clue who I was in the first place. I let my eyes wander as the old man spoke, two beautiful legs were moving down a hallway. The body they were attached to was being dragged. "Shit." I said, pushing myself up out of my wheelchair.

I stumbled and I used everything around me to move. "Hey, you can't walk!" The new nurse yelled to me, "This is more stumbling, hopping and dragging." I said to her, I didn't know that the fire was spreading as quickly as it was until I reached the end of the hallway. Only one door and a lot of smoke on the other side. Bravest and dumbest thing I had ever done was run into that room.

Angel was there. She was on the floor unconscious. The room was torched, it seemed someone torched it on purpose. It was an obvious trap. "Angela? Wake up." I said as I kneeled down beside the woman, some of the strength in my legs returning quicker than it should have. I could hear the door slam, a man wearing a doctor's uniform was standing behind me. He had a pistol, I could feel it against my head. "Should have stayed in that coma." He had an English accent.

Fuckin' British. I was going to beat this until he pissed tea and crapped crumpets. Like an idiot I turned and grabbed his leg, pulling it from under him. Once he dropped I mounted him quickly,I slammed an elbow and then a fist into his face. "Wait! Stop! Someone paid me to do this. I really don't want to be in a burning building." He said, I understood his point. "You tried to kill me." I said, the pain in my head getting worse. It made me angry, I couldn't focus and I hated that. As a detective I needed to be calm and collected. The pain made it impossible.

The more painful it got the more angry I got. I wasn't sure why, but I grabbed the man's throat. I squeezed and I squeezed until the life left his body. I screwed up but the pain went away. I was definitely the villian. But the fact that I carried the unconscious Angela outside said otherwise.

I was greeted with clapping and several police officers. "Holy shit, it's Turn." One of the officers said, "You're a hero, the old man told us what you just did. Stupid, but sometimes stupid works." The cop said to me, "You don't remember me? I'm La Rocha, we went to the academy together." La Rocha told me, "Ah, yeah." I said, hell if I knew who he was at this point. As he spoke another officer took Angela from me, handing her over to paramedics on the scene.

"You're gonna be in the news, just watch. La Rocha said to me. And it was true. The media arrived moments later and everyone pointed them to me. It was about to suck for the rest of the night and I wasn't sure why I felt as good as I did. It was either because I killed a lowlife, rescued the girl, and got the attention or because I was healing faster than any human should have been able to.

"Yes, my approach to medicine made this man possible." The German doctor said, I'm sure he was a jackass. "If you should call anyone a hero, it's me and him." Yeah he was. At least that was over.

It wasn't. Someone still wanted me dead. Shit.

Chrome Berlin ? PRO Laptop Bag

"Hey Sara," I called to my colleague while exploring the expansive space inside Chrome's Berlin - PRO laptop bag ($220 direct). "See if you can fit into this bag!" My joke fell flat probably because the Berlin doesn't look nearly as big as it is from the outside (or perhaps because my petite co-worker had had enough of me that day).

The Chrome Berlin - Pro easily fits laptops of any size, plus all the cords, cables, and accessories you could ever need ? plus a change of clothes, your lunch, a tablet, and much more (read on to find out what I crammed into it). At 15 by 20 by 10 inches (HWD), when fully expanded, the Berlin's volume measures 25 liters!

The "pro" part of the name refers to the fact that this bag can be used by professional bike messengers, and the Berlin part, I presume, is a nod toward the very German looking style. The Berlin is a no-frills bag, available in black or gray, with a dark red lining. It's coolly edgy, but uncomplicated.

Massive as it is, the Chrome Berlin manages to be comfortable, even when you pack it to the brim because it balances weight both vertically down your back, as well as horizontally across the front of your shoulders and chest by way of a thickly padded strap. The strap fastens with one of Chrome's signature seatbelt buckles, which is very cool, but contributes a considerable amount of weight to the bag's 4.5 pounds. Two additional straps?one of which tucks away into a Velcro slot when not in use?can further secure the Berlin to your frame when the load you're hauling seems otherwise impossibly cumbersome. With the Berlin, it can be done!

To test the bag's capacity, I first packed roughly 18 pounds of clothing (I didn't want to mess with anything fragile just yet) into the Chrome Berlin - PRO and rode seven miles on my bike to a friend's house. This test turned out to be more about my own strength than the bag's, because the Berlin did its job to a tee. On my second trial, I loaded it up with a 13-inch laptop in a sleeve for extra protection, a camera that was also housed in a padded case, an iPad with rubber bumper, my purse, a smartphone, several cords and chargers, and a sweater. Not only did I tote this load without buckling, I got it through airport security, too! For the few weeks that I rode and walked around with the Berlin - PRO, there was nothing that it wouldn't fit or that I couldn't carry if it was in the bag. One Berlin owner says he once carried a chainsaw in this incredible bag! I don't doubt him for a second.

As much as you can pack this bag to the gills, the Berlin - PRO doesn't have a cushioned compartment specifically for a laptop. Two Velcro-secured pouches do a better job of protecting smaller electronics (think smartphone sized), but notebook owners should definitely use a protective sleeve.

Cycling commuters who carry a lot of stuff can't go wrong with Chrome's Berlin - PRO bag. Car and subway commuters will undoubtedly find the Berlin way too big for their average needs. At $220, the bag is an investment, but one worth making if you fit the Berlin profile.

Shopping for auto insurance | InsuranceQuotes.com

Allie Johnson

Fewer consumers shopped for auto insurance in 2011 than at any point in the previous five years. Experts say that means you and many other drivers might be passing up a chance for savings.

J.D. Power and Associates? 2012 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study found that only one-fourth of consumers surveyed had shopped for car insurance in 2011. That?s partly because so-called serial shoppers ? who are spurred by ads that promise big savings ? found the best deals they could and then got tired of shopping, according to Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the insurance practice at market research company J.D. Power and Associates. In fact, the average savings per switch decreased from $412 in 2010 to $359 in 2011.

?Shopping for auto insurance isn?t glamorous, it?s not something people look forward to, so if you?re not going to make the savings, you?re not going to shop just for the heck of it,? Bowler says.

But many consumers, experts say, could greatly benefit from looking for a better deal.

auto_insurance-shoppingShould you go shopping?

So, how do you know whether you should shop for auto insurance? Experts say consumers who haven?t shopped around in the past few years stand to gain the biggest savings.

?If you haven?t shopped in five or 10 years ? and, sadly, many people have not ? you would be considered a highly tenured customer by an insurer,? says Bowler, who notes that the retention rate for these longtime customers is about 90 percent. ?All those people automatically renew ? they never even think about it.?

But these are the consumers who realistically could expect to save a few hundred dollars ? possibly $400 or more ? by switching, according to Bowler. ?It?s a buyer?s market, and you have not just dozens but literally 50 to 100 or more choices in any given state,? he says.

Also, innovations in auto insurance offerings over the past 10 years mean that anyone who hasn?t shopped for a long time might be missing out on a newer product that could be a good fit.

?The last decade has seen quite an evolution in the sophistication of the (auto insurance) product,? Bowler says.

Bowler cites Nationwide?s Vanishing Deductible program, which reduces your deductible over time; Progressive?s Pay As You Drive program; which involves installing a device on your car and offers discounts for less and safer driving; and Liberty Mutual?s New Car Replacement program, which pays enough for a brand-new vehicle when a car is totaled if it?s less than a year old.

Bowler says: ?If you haven?t assessed your choices in a decade, you?re giving up a big opportunity.?

In addition to customers who suffer from apathy, there?s another group that stands to gain: those who didn?t really shop the last time they bought a policy.

?Let?s say your parents were with Carrier X, so when it came time for you to get car insurance, you called up their agent and you got a quote and you bought it. You didn?t really shop,? Bowler says. ?I would say in order to do a thorough job, you probably want to talk to five, six, maybe even seven insurance companies.?

Auto insurance shopping tips

So, if you do decide to shop for car insurance, what?s the best way to go about it? Here are five tips from the experts.

1. Set aside an hour.

Consumers tend to dread ? and put off ? shopping for auto insurance, but you can make it less intimidating by blocking off just an hour, says Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America. When Hunter was insurance commissioner for the state of Texas, he rounded up 25 consumers, told them to bring their auto insurance policy and gave them the state insurance buyer?s guide, a telephone and an hour to shop. ?In an hour, the average person saved $125 per car for auto insurance,? Hunter says.

2. Do your homework.

Start by visiting the website of your state insurance commissioner to compare various companies? rates for hypothetical insurance shoppers, Hunter recommends.

?I pick the situation most like mine ? most like my car, most like my age, most like my driving record and so on,? Hunter says.

Choose the five to seven insurance companies with the lowest rates, then go to the website of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and look at consumer complaint ratios for those companies, Hunter says.

?I drop out maybe two or three of those companies that have double, triple or quadruple the complaint ratios of the better companies, so I?m down to three or four companies,? Hunter says.

Then, you can obtain quotes from those insurers.

3. Don?t limit yourself to the Internet.

The J.D. Power shopping survey found that 32 percent of consumers surveyed said they got price quotes online only, and 34 percent of recent shoppers said they prefer to buy a policy online. But many insurers simply use their website as a sort of brochure that merely refers customers to local agents, Bowler says.

?(You might say) ?I want to buy insurance this afternoon, and I?d rather do it during my lunch hour while I?m sitting at my desk,?? Bowler says. ?But I do think there?s a possibility that by limiting your choices to the handful of companies that are really selling online, you could be excluding a carrier that actually represents the best option for you.?

4. Shop before going to an agent.

?A lot of buyers just go to an insurance agent and say, ?Take me ? I?m yours. Here?s what I think I need. Help.? That?s not the way to shop,? Hunter says.

An independent agent might sell policies from only a handful of companies, while a ?captive? agent ? one who works with only one insurance company ? will have even fewer policy choices, Hunter says. And some companies, such as GEICO and USAA, won?t be represented because they don?t sell through agents.

If you do consult an agent, Hunter recommends visiting at least two independent agents, letting them know you?re shopping around and you?re planning to visit one other agent before buying. Once you?ve visited both agents, ask for their best quotes.

?Many (companies) have agents getting commissions anywhere from 6 to 15 percent,? Hunter says. ?That?s why sometimes it?s better to use a no-agent company like GEICO or USAA, because they have a zero or a very small commission factor in their rates.?

But Jeff McCarthy, branch manager for Harrington Insurance Agency in Woburn, Mass., says using an agent can save consumers money and hassle in the long run, especially if they don?t want to take the time to learn about insurance.

?I?ve had people come to me after they had an accident and didn?t have the coverage they had thought they had because they didn?t know what they were doing,? McCarthy says.

5. Look for special discounts.

Some consumers will qualify for discounts based on their circumstances ? such as being in the military, not driving much or even having a baby, says Carole Walker, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, a nonprofit group that provides education and information about insurance.

Bowler says his wife got a good deal on car insurance because she?s a teacher.

?It?s a good idea to really shop around and take advantage of any discounts that may be available to you,? Walker says.

Andorra Cuts Out Monaco Advantage

Tax havens are great for saving money, but if it's not close to an international airport it's not going to be attractive to those who want one but also want to continue running their business - which is why an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean won't see many high net worth individuals looking to buy a property and take residency there.

But take a State that has an excellent reputation for sport, security and quality of life, put it on the coast of the Mediterranean and fill it with millionaires and billionaires and within fifteen minutes of an international airport - and you have Monaco.

Give it a border with the French Riviera and a short distance from Italy and it's easy to see why Monaco holds such appeal for successful business people who want to live somewhere where they're not paying half and often more of their income in tax and it's easy to understand why they pay top dollar (or in this case Euros) for real estate.

But there is an alternative, and that alternative is Andorra.

It has similarities with Monaco but also differences, and one of the major differences that has put Andorra at a disadvantage for those considering which tax haven to choose is soon to disappear.

Looking at the similarities, both countries (and they are both independent countries, neither of which is a member of the EU) have a zero rate income tax and no inheritance tax, and both have first class medical facilities including modern hospitals with some of the best doctors and surgeons working there.

In order to gain residency both require a bank account to be established locally. The banks in Monaco will often ask for an initial deposit of between 300,000 and a million Euros while the Andorra banks will require a lot less than this. The residency office in Monaco will need to see a certificate from one of the banks in Monaco showing that the deposit has been made. Once residency is granted the money is free to be used for whatever purpose the person who deposited the money feels they want to use it for.

Another similarity is that both require an applicant to have an address within the country. This is via renting or buying, and Andorra is soon changing their rules where the minimum investment in a property in Andorra will be 370,000 Euros. Up to now there has been no established minimum spend.

But there are differences between the two, notably the cost of buying property in Monaco and property in Andorra. A 30m2 studio apartment will cost a million Euros in Monaco, while good two and three bedroom apartments are available for 400,000 Euros and houses from 800,000 Euros when looking at property in Andorra.

For some high net worth individuals the difference in real estate costs between the two isn't as important an issue as how convenient they are for conducting business. Andorra has high speed broadband, better than the UK's, so for those who can do much of their work online, it is an option - both countries are an hour ahead of GMT so doing business with London and New York isn't an issue.

However if that person considering both countries needed to physically meet people for business in different locations around Europe or further afield, Monaco currently wins hands down. Fifteen minutes away by helicopter or 40 minutes by car is Nice International Airport, served by various national and low cost airlines, with flights both in Europe and around the world available for the active businessman - and when compared to a two and a half hour drive from Andorra to Barcelona in Spain or Toulouse in France there is no contest.

But that is set to change with a new helicopter link having been approved recently between Barcelona and Andorra, taking the time down to less than thirty minutes for those who take Andorra residency - and regular flights between the UK and France starting this November at Seu d'Urgell Airport in Spain - a mere fifteen minute drive from the Andorra border, effectively killing off a long held Monaco property advantage.

And with Andorra property a bargain compared to Monaco there could be a few enterpreneurs making their way there in the summer months.

Clemens lawyers emphasize pitcher's work ethic

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawyers have launched their defense of Roger Clemens with what seemed more like a testimonial dinner than a trial, putting on a pair of witnesses who described in reverential terms the famed baseball pitcher's work ethic in high school and college.

The message the defense began hammering home Tuesday was that hard work, not steroids or human growth hormone, turned Clemens into a great pitcher. That came after prosecutors used two dozen witnesses over 19 days to try to prove that Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs.

One of Clemens' former high school teammates in Texas, Todd Howey, said he and his friends would see Clemens jogging on Friday nights while they were out "looking for trouble." Clemens did so many runs in the outfield that he dug a trail that looked like it had been carved by a cow in a pasture, the witness testified.

"I've yet to see anybody work like Roger Clemens," Howey said. Despite the dedication, Clemens was not an exceptional pitcher back then, he said, reaching only 83-84 mph on his fastball.

"We just didn't think he was that good," he said.

But when Howey played against him in college ? Howey for Texas Tech and Clemens for the University of Texas ? Clemens was throwing a lot harder.

"He proved us all wrong," Howey said, who talked so fast he had to be slowed down by the court reporter and Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin.

"You're one of those unusual things ? a fast-talking Southerner," Hardin quipped.

Mike Capel, a former major league pitcher and longtime friend of Clemens, had played against him in high school and was a teammate in college. He made a similar observation about Clemens' transformation in college, describing him as a harder thrower, more athletic and trimmed down compared with high school. He said Clemens had a "very, very, very good" work ethic.

Clemens, who through most of the trial has taken frequent notes, put the pen down during their testimony but watched closely.

Prosecutors tried to exclude the glowing testimony, noting that seven government witnesses already testified during cross-examination how hard Clemens worked. They wrote in a filing late Monday that it invited jurors to infer that because Clemens didn't use performance-enhancing drugs early on, he must not have later in his career.

Prosecutors argued that if the testimony were to be allowed, the judge should let them rebut it with evidence from other players who also worked hard but still used steroids or HGH.

But U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ruled against them on both counts.

"Athletes who are hard workers tend to last longer and perform better," said Walton, a former athlete himself who went to college on a football scholarship.

Clemens' lawyers started their case after the government rested Tuesday. The government's main witness was Clemens' former strength coach, Brian McNamee, who said he injected the ex-pitcher with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with human growth hormone in 2000.

Clemens is charged with two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstruction of Congress. All relate to his testimony at a congressional hearing in February 2008 and his deposition that preceded it.

The heart of the case is the allegation that Clemens lied when he said he had never used steroids or HGH, but the obstruction count included 15 statements, or "acts," in which Clemens is alleged to have misled Congress on a variety of issues. Walton dismissed two of those acts Tuesday.

The first dismissed act dealt with Clemens' claim that he had "no idea" that former Sen. George Mitchell wanted to talk with him in preparation for the 2007 Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball. The government couldn't prove otherwise because some of its evidence was ruled inadmissible due to rules over attorney-client privilege.

The second dismissed act deals with Clemens' statement in his 2008 deposition that "I couldn't tell you the first thing about (HGH)." The judge said that statement could be misinterpreted because it was asked in the context of whether Clemens had ever done any research into HGH.

Thirteen alleged misleading statements remain in the charges. The government only needs to prove one to gain a conviction for obstruction of Congress.

One of the government's final witnesses was Anthony Corso, who worked out with McNamee in New York City. Corso related a pair of conversations meant to show that McNamee didn't start making up allegations and fabricating evidence against Clemens to placate federal investigators in 2007.

"Mr. McNamee had mentioned that Mr. Clemens was one of the athletes that was getting positive results from" HGH, said Corso, recalling a conversation from around 2002.

Local filmmakers stir up 'Dust,' a drama debuting Thursday ...

When Kansas City artists Cody Critcheloe, Jaimie Warren and Peggy Noland got a $4,000 Rocket Grant for an art project, they immediately decided it would go into the making of a music video.

That wouldn?t be too hard for the trio, who were in the habit of defying the rules of art and fashion. Critcheloe has made videos for his punk rock band Ssion. Noland designs wild costumes for videos and performance art pieces. Warren dresses up as a popcorn and hosts ?Whoop Dee Doo,? a local live show that involves lots of improvisation and fun for kids. Shooting a music video would be too easy and normal, they thought, so they decided a 20-minute film would be better. ?We thought it might just look like one of the projects we usually do, so we decided to step out from what we usually do and work with someone new,? said Warren. The new people were Casey Spooner and Adam Dugas, both from New York and with a wealth of experience making movies. Spooner works on solo projects and also has a band, which has toured with Critcheloe and Ssion. Noland has designed clothes for both. In the process the 20-minute project evolved to 70, and on Thursday the movie will make its local debut at the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport. ?We spent a month developing the movie and then shot it in three days. It was crazy,? said Dugas, who directed the film with Spooner.?Dust? is about a family facing a sort of crisis. Three siblings, Lynn (Warren), Baker (Critcheloe) and Margaret Marie (Noland) are confronted with the reality of an elder brother, Coke (Dugas), who is planning to move back into the family house with his new wife. That is troubling enough for the three siblings and their myopic outlook on life. It doesn?t help that they can?t stand Patty (Katie Rayle of Los Angeles), their sister-in-law. Discerning viewers might recognize an echo of Anton Chekhov?s famous play ?Three Sisters.? However, the producers say ?the style is informed by independent cinema, particularly the Warhol/Morrissey films, early John Waters, Lars von Trier, Pedro Almodovar and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.?The filmmakers just finished editing this month and have no firm plans to test the festival circuit, but they hope to have a DVD in distribution in the fall.Warren said she has opted not to watch the film before the public screening. She wants to feel that rush of excitement with the rest of the cast and crew. The film was mostly shot at the large Northeast area house she shares with four other artists. The crew converted every room into a set. More than 30 area artists worked on the project, including lighting, costume and set designers and videographers. Warren discovered that acting for film wasn?t too far removed from the improvisational style of ?Whoop Dee Doo,? but she?s not sure if the effect is the same. ?To me the experience was very surreal, because we didn?t know what we were getting into,? Warren said. ?It was hard for me. I had never acted before and I don?t even know whether I did a good job.? Locals can see and judge for themselves.

Third year economics student at York University explains how she converted her equity research internship into a job offer from Goldman Sachs

Internships

By Sarah Butcher, 24 May 2012

What does it take to get a graduate job in equity research at Goldman Sachs? We?ve already looked at what equity research at Goldman Sachs involves, but if you want to know about succeeding in the recruitment process, Katherine Chan, a third year economics student at York University (with a graduate offer of an equity research job in Goldman?s asset management arm), has offered her extensive insights?to York University?s student publication.?

This is Katherine?s advice (summarised), and what we?ve gleaned from her account of getting into Goldman:

1. ? Be persistent, start young

Initially, Katherine thought she wanted to go into law. When she realised she didn?t, she decided to investigate her interest in banking. While she was at sixth form college, a teacher recommended she go for an insight day at Goldman. That was enough to ignite her enthusiasm:? ?everything else was simply a step [to getting there],? she says.

2. ?If you have a pre-university gap year, spend it in a big brand name ? even you apply for an admin role

Katherine?s gap year was in the Bank of England during the financial crisis. She applied for a role as a secretary but ended up taking on far more responsibility.

?[My placement] was in 2008 when the financial crisis happened? Because of that I took on a lot more responsibility and by the end of the year I was doing data analysis which was really interesting.?

3. ? Don?t be put off by rejection

When Katherine applied for spring weeks (first year internships at banks), she was rejected. This didn?t deter her.

4. Do some volunteering

?I volunteered at Christians Against Poverty and they?re a national debt counselling charity, so it?s a different side of finance. In first year I did that on a weekly basis and I also spent a month working in their head office in Bradford.?

5. ? Apply for a lot of internships

Katherine applied for 15. She only heard back from one: Goldman Sachs.

6. ? Don?t expect a numeracy test if you apply to Goldman. Do expect a big emphasis on fit

The graduate application process had three stages: an online application, two interviews, but no numeracy test.

The first interview was, ?more of a chat I found, [with] them trying to see if I?d fit in with their culture.?

7. ?Don?t expect bizarre questions

Katherine said there weren?t any trick questions: it was more about testing how she arrived at an answer to a standard question.

8. ?Do expect a combination of ad hoc projects and a long term project during the internship

?My long term project was ?What are the opportunities for consumer staples in Africa??? said Katherine. ?So consumer stocks are items like shampoo and Africa is potentially the next big demographic of people who will be able to buy shampoo, packaged food, and beer, so I was looking at when is Africa going to be big and rich enough to afford these products??

9. ?Do expect speed-dating style networking dinners

Goldman Sachs? intern networking events apparently include a dinner set up like speed dating event, with a different course at each table.

10. ?Do expect to be actively assessed against other interns

There was an intern debate halfway through the internship and Katherine was also asked to make a stock pitch presentation to the research directors at the end of the summer.

11. Do expect to work very hard. Try to be enthusiastic and pleasant

Katherine arrived daily at 6.45am and finished around 7.30pm.

She attributes her success to hard work, passion about her Africa project, and to being a good team member.

12. Don?t expect to receive an offer immediately

Katherine had to wait until two weeks after the internship until her offer from Goldman Sachs came through.

Russian FM: Both Syrian sides to blame for deaths

(AP) ? Both sides in the Syria conflict "had a hand" in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in Houla, Russia's foreign minister said Monday, calling for a full investigation.

The comments by Sergey Lavrov came a day after the U.N. Security Council, which includes Russia, blamed the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in Houla, a collection of villages near the central city of Homs, but avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of at least 108 men, women and children.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the governmental troops," Lavrov said after talks in Moscow with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, or that many of the bodies were found with wounds indicating the victims had been shot at close range or tortured.

"The guilt has to be determined objectively," Lavrov said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement a peace plan put forward by special envoy Kofi Annan, who arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior Syrian officials. Annan's six-point plan calls on both sides to respect a cease-fire.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."

Lavrov called for all in the international community to focus on implementing Annan's plan, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the plan was fully supported by all. The Russian envoy said talk about the need for Assad to step down cast doubt on the West's commitment to the Annan plan and encouraged the opposition to keep up the fight.

Hague, however, confirmed that Britain still believes Assad should stand aside.

"But the important thing is that the Annan plan is pursued in whatever way it can be pursued," he said. "The alternatives are the Annan plan or ever-increasing chaos in Syria, and a descent closer and closer to all-out civil war and collapse."

China on Monday also condemned the killings of civilians in Houla and called for an end to the violence, but gave no indication it was rethinking its strategy toward the fighting in Syria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said that Beijing fully supports Annan's mediation efforts and the UN monitors.

The protests against Assad began in March 2011 and turned into an uprising after his government responded with a violent crackdown on dissent. The U.N. estimated that at least 9,000 people were killed in the first year of the conflict, but hundreds more have been killed since then.
