COLLEGE FOOTBALL: UCLA's prized recruit Eddie Vanderdoes cleared to play by NCAA after leaving Notre Dame

Five-star defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes has been cleared to play immediately for UCLA after an appeal with the National Letter of Intent committee, officially ending his dramatic exit from Notre Dame.1

The touted recruit initially committed to the Irish on National Signing Day in February, but asked out of his national letter of intent due to an illness in the family. The Placer High grad decided on UCLA to be closer to his home in the Sacramento area.

Rick Kimbrel of recruiting website BruinBru.com first reported Vanderdoes' immediate eligibility, a boon for a UCLA defensive line struggling with health. Had Vanderdoes not been released to play, he would have had to sit out the upcoming fall as well as lose a year of eligibility -- leaving him with only three seasons of college football.

Notre Dame had declined to release Vanderdoes from his letter of intent "in order to protect the integrity of that very important program," head coach Brian Kelly said in a statement in early June. Many Irish fans argued that if Vanderdoes were allowed to leave, letters of intent would become meaningless -- introducing more chaos into a recruiting world in which verbal commitments can flip week to week.

College coaches, of course, are not bound by any such restrictions; Kelly himself left Cincinnati for Notre

Dame in 2009, buying out of a contract that extended to 2013.

As it now stands, Vanderdoes has regained all four years of eligibility. Rated the No. 3 recruit in California by Rivals.com, he will immediately bolster the Bruins' defensive line if he lives up to his billing.

Already praised by head coach Jim Mora for his work ethic, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound freshman could immediately slide in as the Bruins' starting defensive end.

All-Pac-12 selection Datone Jones graduated from the spot and became UCLA's first first-round draft pick since 2006. Jones' likely successor, rising senior Owamagbe Odighizuwa, underwent hip surgery in the offseason and is questionable to return. If Vanderdoes can impress enough early on, the UCLA staff could even elect to redshirt Odighizuwa -- a former five-star recruit himself -- to save him for a full season.

Defensive line depth also wasn't helped when backup nose tackle Brandon Tuliaupupu tore his ACL near the end of spring camp.

The other side of the line, however, is held down by returning starter Cassius Marsh, a physical player who was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention. He had 50 tackles in 2012, and projects as a mid-round draft pick in next spring's draft. Senior Seali'i Epenesa made 10 starts at nose tackle last season and should keep the spot this fall.

UCLA begins training camp Aug. 7 at Cal State San Bernardino.

Bradley Manning acquitted of 'aiding the enemy' but not of espionage

With an acquittal, Bradley Manning avoided his most serious charge, but he still faces convictions on multiple counts of violating the Espionage Act and theft. The judge has broad discretion for sentencing.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / July 30, 2013

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning is escorted out of a courthouse in Fort Meade, Md., after receiving a verdict in his court martial on Tuesday. He was acquitted of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge he faced, but still faces convictions for espionage, theft, and other charges that could add up to a life sentence.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was found not guilty on Tuesday of ?aiding the enemy? for his role in providing documents to the online site WikiLeaks, a charge that could have sent him to prison for life without possibility of parole.

The intelligence analyst, who pleaded guilty to a number of lesser offenses before the trial began, was also charged with several counts under the Espionage Act.

The verdict was greeted with mixed feelings by Manning supporters, including the American Civil Liberties Union. ?While we?re relieved that Mr. Manning was acquitted of the most dangerous charge, the ACLU has long held the view that leaks to the press in the public interest should not be prosecuted under the Espionage Act,? said Ben Wizner, director of the ACLU?s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, in a statement.

They also argued that the US government was seeking to send a statement to self-described whistle-blowers.

?Since Manning already pleaded guilty to charges of leaking information ? which carry significant punishment ? it seems clear that the government was seeking to intimidate anyone who might consider revealing valuable information in the future.??

So what?s next for Manning?

The judge, Col. Denise Lind, will convene the sentencing phase of the trial on Wednesday.

Colonel Lind is not bound by any mandatory minimum sentences, notes Richard Rosen, former commandant of the Judge Advocate General School for the US Army and the director of the Center for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock.

?She could theoretically give him no punishment or a letter of reprimand,? Mr. Rosen says.?

To try to prevent this, the prosecution will make its case during the sentencing phase of how Manning?s actions hurt the United States and the military. These are known as ?aggravation claims.?

The defense will then have the opportunity to rebut the government?s claims, as well as present extenuating and mitigating circumstances.?

This might include arguments such as, ? 'I was only being a good American. I was a whistle-blower. I was trying to help the country,? ? Rosen says.

He may also present ?good soldier? testimony, which could include explanations such as, ? ?Hey, I may have done all of these things, but I was really a good soldier other than this.? ?

Since the rules of evidence are relaxed during the sentencing phase, it may allow the defense to present testimony that might have been deemed irrelevant during the trial but that might sway the judge to grant a lesser sentence. This might include describing family problems or persecution Manning may have suffered because of his sexual orientation, Rosen adds.?

Manning might also make a statement on his own behalf, which could be sworn or unsworn. The prosecution could not cross-examine Manning in the case of an unsworn statement.

The defense will likely endeavor to make the case that ?nothing he did ultimately harmed the country,? Rosen adds, predicting that during the sentencing phase Wednesday, the judge ?will probably bend over backwards and allow Manning to present whatever evidence he wants.?

Summer Baseball: Ashland eliminated by Medfield in Central Mass. Sr. Babe Ruth North finals

Tim Haggerty went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored as Medfield (19-6) ousted visiting Ashland 7-4 in the decisive third game of the North finals.

"This is the fourth (North) title in a row for us," said Medfield coach Kevin Glasheen, whose team will play South champion Bellingham in a best-of-three World Series, beginning with Game 1 Wednesday at 5:30 at Medfield.

Medfield jumped ahead with a four-run second inning, and led as much as 7-1 before Ashland rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. But Remy Fragola, who had a two-RBI double earlier, came in and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

"Ashland put a scare into us, they're a hard-working, classy group of guys that are well-coached," said Glasheen.

Ashland (17-8) was led by Nick Cunnignham, who had an RBI, a run scored, and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game. John Ciampaglia went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

"We had a real good year, but unfortunately it ended too soon," said Ashland coach Kyle Wilson, whose team lost to Medfield in the North final last year and won this year's opener.

Is he coming back? Phelps vague about future

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? When Michael Phelps walked away from swimming after the London Olympics, he was adamant about one thing: His career was over.

Now, it sounds like he's not so sure.

While saying he's never been happier with his life ? and certainly doesn't miss the grind of what it took to become the most winningest athlete in Olympic history ? Phelps left the door open to change his mind before the 2016 Rio Games.

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Phelps said Monday. "I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

In Barcelona for the world swimming championships, Phelps spoke to The Associated Press and other international media organizations in a series of one-on-one interviews set up by his sponsor, Speedo. When asked by the AP, yes or no, whether he'll compete at the next Olympics, Phelps coyly said he hasn't planned that far ahead in his life.

That's a striking change from his comments before and immediately after the London Games, when he insisted his retirement was set in stone and it had always been his goal to quit swimming before he turned 30.

Phelps will be 31 at the time of the opening ceremony for the Rio Games.

"I don't know. We're in 2013," he said, before adding, "There's nothing in the works right now."

There's plenty of time for a comeback. Phelps would likely want to begin training before the end of the year, which would allow him to get into peak condition leading up to the next world championships in 2015, an important stepping stone for the Olympics.

Phelps certainly isn't training at the moment. He jammed the small toe of his right foot on the edge of a sofa while at home in Baltimore, and aggravated the injury when he played in a golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.

He's wearing a boot cast on his foot while in Barcelona to cope with a small stress fracture.

After some sightseeing and promotional appearances, Phelps took in a second night of swimming at the Palau Sant Jordi before getting ready to head back to the U.S. on Tuesday. He was accompanied by his new girlfriend, Golf Channel reporter Win McMurry.

"I have no plans to do anything," Phelps said. "I love what I'm doing now. I'm able to travel so much, play golf. I'm on my schedule. I've never been able to have that. I've never been able to do really whatever I want to do. I go wherever I want to go. I see whatever I want to see. It's nice waking up at 10, 11, 12 o'clock in the afternoon. I'm pretty lazy besides playing golf. I don't do much."

He does have some projects away from the pool, including a series of swim schools and a foundation devoted to water safety. He said those are fulfilling projects, but he's still trying to sort out where he wants to go in his life.

"Peter (Carlisle, his agent) asked me where I want to be in one year, five years and 10 years," Phelps said. "I'm still in the process of putting everything down on paper."

While passionate about golf, Phelps seems to realize it doesn't present much of a career path other than playing in celebrity tournaments. He once talked bravely about not setting any limits on how far he could go in the sport, even joking that the only way he would be at the Rio Games was at a golfer (the sport is returning to the Olympic program in 2016).

But the game has clearly humbled him since London, despite getting lessons from famed coach Hank Haney as part of a show for the Golf Channel.

"I'm competitive in everything," Phelps said. "But golf has a very slow learning curve. For me to be able to get where I want to be, it's going to take some time to get there. It's not something that's going to take 24 hours and, bang, I'll be able to shoot par and be a scratch golfer. It's so annoying. It's probably the most humbling thing I've ever done, the most humbling sport I've ever done, the toughest thing I've ever done."

Phelps' competitive side showed after the U.S. men lost in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Sunday. The Americans were edged at the finish by the French, a repeat of last summer's Olympics when a team that included Phelps also settled for silver.

"We should never lose that relay with the talent we have on the team," he said.

While vague on a possible comeback, Phelps was downright candid with this thoughts about the relay ? perhaps because the head coach of the U.S. men's team is Bob Bowman, who was Phelps' longtime coach and remains a good friend and business partner.

Phelps made his feelings known to Bowman in a series of blunt texts, suggesting the Americans should have gone with Jimmy Feigen in the leadoff spot and Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian as the anchor.

Instead, Adrian went first and Feigen took over for the finish despite being the least experienced member of the U.S. foursome. He acknowledged paying too much attention to the teams next to him, the Australians and the Russians, and not noticing the French coming up in an outside lane until it was too late.

"I was so fired up," Phelps said. "We have enough guys on that team who can swim faster than that, and that was just frustrating for me to watch."

Not frustrating enough to announce his comeback.

Not yet anyway.

That said, it's clear just about everyone on the U.S. team would love for Phelps to rejoin them in time for Rio. Though he always had to be treated a bit differently than everyone else because of his fame, he seemed to get along well with his fellow swimmers. He still stays in contact with many of them; in fact, he was hanging out with Allison Schmitt and Conor Dwyer at his home the day he hurt his toe.

Phelps has been catching up with the U.S. team during his quick trip to Barcelona.

"It was so good to see him. We miss him so much," said Missy Franklin, the star of the women's squad. "The team's not the same without him. But we still have an incredible team and he has taught us so much, and I think we're all excited to carry on his legacy after him."

The most experienced member of the team, Natalie Coughlin, said it was strange to be at a meet of this magnitude without Phelps.

"I haven't been on a team without Michael in 14 years, so this is pretty crazy," Coughlin said. "I would love to see Michael back. But I just want to see him be happy. He's enjoying his life right now and enjoying his time away from the pool and well deserved ? very well deserved."

More Hit Gameloft Xbox Enabled Titles Making There Way To Windows 8/RT Soon (Video)

July 28, 2013 No Comments

Yes, you read it right the first time. It seems mobile game developer Gameloft, isn?t quite done with the Windows 8 platform after all. The developer who is just now beginning to bring over their popular franchises to the Windows Phone platform are evidently?also bringing their classic?s over to the Windows?8/RT platform as well.?Below is a video from YouTube user jun kit ag, in which the user shows?Xbox enabled Asphalt?7: Heat (Now available on Windows Phone?) being available as an Acer exclusive to the Windows?Store. The user?is attempting to download the game and install it for the first time.??Take a look:

The video looks?pretty legit on?our end and we are sure the user has nothing to gain by posting a simple video like this. Having quality titles on a Windows 8/RT tablet or Windows 8 desktop for that matter would?give the overall appearance that Windows 8 is really getting the developers it needs at?a good time. One would hope that the game would support Xbox controller input but we wont know until we get our hands on it later. Lets just hope that this is the beginning and that even newer titles will be making its way over to the platform as well.?What are your thoughts??Comment below..MBGW

Analysis: Who's backing who as Syria's civil war threatens to spread

Daniel Leal Olivas / AFP - Getty Images

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

?

By Mandy Clark and Paul Nassar, NBC News

News analysis

Syria?s two-year civil war has claimed more than?100,000 lives and sent at least 1.7 million refugees spilling across its borders.

It has already affected neighboring countries, and now threatens to drag in the United States.

What began as a popular movement, demanding the removal of autocratic President Bashar Assad, has become an increasingly sectarian conflict.

About three-quarters of Syria's Muslims are from the Sunni sect. However, the Assad dynasty, which has ruled the country since 1970, is from the minority Alawite sect which is close to Shiite Islam.?

The sectarian divide is important because it lies at the root of instability not only within Syria but also in Iraq and other pockets of the Middle East.

ASSAD?S FRIENDS

Iran
The Islamic Republic of Iran - a Shiite Muslim regional power - is a staunch ally of the Assad government and has been providing arms, military training and cash. If Assad falls, Iran will be deeply wounded.?

Defense think tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) sees the Syria conflict as part of a regional power struggle.

?It is increasingly clear that the world is confronting a crisis that extends far beyond Syria, threatening to deteriorate into a regional conflict,? a recent briefing paper outlined. ?Now part civil, part proxy, it has also become a great power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.??

Iraq
After American troops toppled Sunni Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraq?s Shiite majority became dominant. With this shift came regional alliances with Shiite countries including Iran and Syria.

NBC's chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, joins The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd to talk about Iraq's civil war.

Iraq provides a helping hand to the Assad regime by allowing Iranian arms and fighters to cross into Syria from Iraq, according to Secretary of State John Kerry. It also allows vital resupply flights from Iran to cross its airspace.

But this support is not without its costs: Violence is slipping across the border into Iraq and inflaming existing tensions.?Deadly attacks are growing in Iraq, with the number of deaths due to violence back up at 2008 levels.?

RUSI warns that if the Syria conflict continues, ?the most important casualty of war is potentially Iraq.??

Russia
Russia is the Syrian government?s most powerful foreign backer and has stuck its neck out to support Assad?s crackdown.

It is helping the regime with weapons and even supports the growing involvement of Lebanese militia, Hezbollah.?It is also reportedly helping Syria?s elite get around international financial sanctions, and has been protecting the regime from U.N. sanctions by using its veto power?in the Security Council.

One theory for why Russia has been so resolute in its backing of Damascus is to ensure continued control of its only Mediterranean naval base, which is in the Syrian port of Tartus.

Russia has also invoked the specter of Islamic extremism in Syria, saying that Alawite Assad is fighting Sunni Muslim radicals. ?

ASSAD?S FOES

Saudi Arabia
The kingdom is the Syria opposition?s main backer, along with smaller Gulf state of Qatar, and has been sending billions in humanitarian aid and weapons to Syrian rebels.

It is providing advanced weaponry, including anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles that it hopes will tip the balance for the rebels. ?

It is a follower of the strict Wahabi branch of Sunni Islam.?In backing anti-Assad forces, Saudi Arabia is challenging its main regional foe, Shiite Iran.?Some experts believe the Sunni-Shiite divisions are being exaggerated for political reasons.

?Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been willing to use sectarian language to make the Syrian conflict seem like a widespread attack on the Sunni population,? according to Chris Phillips, a lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London. ?It?s part of a regional cold war with Iran on the battlefield of Syria.?

Qatar
The small kingdom may exist in the shadow of neighbor Saudi Arabia, but it has big money and ambitions. It has been backing the rebels with humanitarian aid as well as arms, and is has been seeking a more prominent role in the region, offering to host peace talks in its capital, Doha.?

Like Saudi Arabia, it is a follower of the strict Wahabi branch of Sunni Islam.

United States
While the American government has supported anti-Assad forces with non-lethal assistance such as training, body armor, communications equipment and food aid, it has deep misgivings over whether to become more involved in the conflict.

Still smarting from unpopular interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. faces fears that deeper engagement in Syria will embroil it in yet another hard-to-exit regional conflict. There are also widespread concerns that American weapons will fall into the hands of radical al Qaeda-linked groups fighting with the rebels.

?Once we take action, we should be prepared for what comes next,? Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said in a letter to Congress. ?Deeper involvement is hard to avoid.?

Until June, the administration was opposed to providing any lethal assistance to Syria's rebels, but in June it said it was moving ahead with sending weapons to vetted members of the opposition.?

Turkey
Formerly a close friend of Syria, Turkey?s moderate Islamist government has become a supporter of the rebels and supplying them with arms, security sources and diplomats say, according to Reuters.?Officials also look the other way as rebels use the long and porous border as a resupply route.?

At Turkey?s request, NATO has installed Patriot missile defenses on the border to protect it from spillover from the war in Syria. The move was aimed at calming Turkey's fears that it could come under attack from Syria.

Turkey also houses 500,000 Syrians in towns and relatively well-equipped refugee camps on the long border with Syria. There is growing anger in Turkey against the newcomers, though, especially after a bombing in the border town of Reyhanli killed more than 50 people.

France
France, the former colonial power in Syria, was the first Western power to join the anti-Assad camp and has been pushing for a more committed international effort to help the rebels. ??

It is increasingly concerned that Syrian rebels are losing ground and has suggested it will boost shipments of technical, medical and humanitarian aid to the rebels, but declined request for weapons and ammunition.

CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE

Lebanon
Schisms in Syria are mirrored in its tiny neighbor Lebanon, which is a mosaic of religious communities, each with their own allegiances.

Mostafa Assaf / Reuters, file

Supporters of Hezbollah and relatives of Hezbollah members attend the funeral of a Hezbollah fighter who died in the Syrian conflict in Ouzai in Beirut in May.

Christian and Sunni Muslim communities strongly oppose Assad?s regime, remembering the oppression of the 30-year Syrian occupation of Lebanon.

On the other side is Hezbollah. Of all the regional players, the powerful Shiite militia that controls much of Lebanon - and forms part of the government - may have the most at stake in the civil war.?Should Assad fall, the military wing of Hezbollah will find it very hard to resupply arms.

It is for this reason that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has decided to publicly throw his weight behind the Assad regime. Hezbollah fighters have great experience in guerilla warfare thanks to more than 30 years of confrontation with Israel.

Hezbollah's entry into the Syrian civil war has worsened the already tense relationships between Lebanon?s various religious communities, making it more likely that it will slip back into civil war itself.

Jordan
The estimated 540,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan are a huge strain on the ailing economy. Meanwhile, King Abdullah?s government is struggling not to get too embroiled in the Syrian civil war, and stresses that that it wants a political solution.

Reuters

An aerial view shows the Zaatari refugee camp for Syrians in Jordan.

Nevertheless, Jordan allows American troops to train Syrian rebels on its territory and F-16 jets are positioned there.?

There are widespread fears in Jordan that Assad will deploy ?sleeper? terrorist cells to destabilize the country if it openly backs the rebels.?A Jordanian official recently told NBC News that officials there believe such an attack is inevitable.

Hamas: The Palestinians
The militant Sunni Palestinian group that governs Gaza used to have an important base in Syria?s capital Damascus, where it was both hosted by, and held hostage to, the whims of the Assad regime.

Hamas withdrew in 2011 after receiving support from Islamist movements sparked by the Arab Spring, and is now supporting Assad?s enemies. Palestinians in Syria are paying the price for the betrayal of their former host and patron, and have been driven out or targeted by bombings. Over 235,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria have been displaced, and more than 80,000 are now refugees again in neighboring countries, according to the U.N.

Israel
Although Syria and Israel are officially still at war, the relationship between the two has been relatively stable.?

One of Israel?s main worries is that Islamist militants will enter Israel through the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.?While worrying that the Golan could become a springboard for attacks by militants among the rebels battling Assad, Israel has said repeatedly it does not want to be drawn into the fighting.?

"We are not seeking to challenge anyone, but no one will harm the State of Israel without a response -- a strong and resolute response," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told soldiers who took part in a Golani infantry brigade exercise in June.

Israel is believed to have carried out three bomb strikes this year in Syria targeting Hezbollah weapons caches but refuses to confirm or deny whether it was responsible.?

IN CONCLUSION

Although the civil war is centered on Syria, it is?risks inflaming unrest across the Middle East.??The whole region could face a sustained period of violence,? University of London's Chris Phillips added.

AP Photos: Pilgrims greet energized Pope Francis

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? It was perfect beach weather Saturday on Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, and the white sands were jammed full of people.

But instead of beach balls and bikinis, the nearly 2 million people who packed the beach had brought Bibles, rosaries and crucifixes.

They were pilgrims from all over the world who had come to greet Pope Francis on the next-to-last day of his weeklong visit to Rio and neighboring Sao Paulo state.

Francis had spent Saturday morning in Rio's ornate Municipal Theater, where he urged city leaders to remember society's least fortunate. While onstage, he also met with members of Brazil's indigenous tribes, who gave him a feathered headdress.

Throughout his trip, Francis has embraced the unexpected, wading into crowds and urging Catholics to shake up the church. His flock appeared to take that message to heart Saturday, all along the giant curve of Copacabana.

Here's a gallery of images from the sixth day of the pope' visit to Brazil.

Help, Please: Gretchen Holt-Witt of Cookies for Kids' Cancer

gretchen holt!

When Gretchen Holt-Witt?s 2-year-old son, Liam, was diagnosed with pediatric cancer, she decided to raise awareness by doing what Liam loved most ? baking cookies. But this is not a story about a scrappy little bake sale: With the help of friends and volunteers, Gretchen baked more than 100,000 cookies in eighteen days. That headline helped launch Cookies for Kids? Cancer, a national organization that has raised more than $4 million to date to fund pediatric cancer research through cookies and bake sales. In 2011,?Liam?s courageous four-year fight with cancer came to an end. But Gretchen?s commitment to his memory and the fight against children?s cancer continues. ? SuChin Pak

Tell me the story of how Cookies for Kids? Cancer began.
A few days after Liam first entered the scary and uncertain world of cancer treatment, one of his oncologists shared with me the sobering statistic that cancer is the No. 1 disease killer of children in the United States. As someone who considers herself a well-read person, I was dumbfounded. How could I not know that cancer claims the lives of more children every year than asthma, AIDS, MS, and MD combined? When I pressed him on why people don?t know this awful statistic, he said: ?Kids don?t make headlines when they?re diagnosed because no one cares about a kid who gets cancer.? I?ll never forget that moment. To this day, more than six years later, those words are just as shocking. But what he said next is something that I just couldn?t believe and still have a hard time comprehending. He told me how little funding goes to childhood cancer. In fact, less than 4 percent of the National Cancer Institutes?s multibillion dollar budget goes to the dozens of types of childhood cancers.

gretchen holt!

When Liam was declared to have no evidence of cancer in his tiny body after a grueling seven months of treatment (which included multiple rounds of high-dose chemo, radiation, painful antibody therapy, and a twelve-and-a-half-hour surgery), I knew I had to do something to give back. I was sitting on the steps of Liam?s school after dropping him off for a day of sheer bliss, a simple act that seemed nothing short of a miracle to me, trying to think of a way I could raise money, to help generate awareness in whatever way I could. I knew it had to be something irresistible ? something that people wanted to be a part of instead of wanting to turn away from because it was just too scary. And so the idea of baking cookies during the holidays with the help of some friends and donating all the proceeds to pediatric cancer seemed to be a good idea.

What I didn?t know was just how hard it would be to actually pull off my little idea to bake 96,000 cookies. But I?m not sure that would have stopped me. I would have done anything to help make a difference.

Over the years, Cookies for Kids? Cancer has raised millions of dollars for pediatric cancer research. Can you share one story that especially moves you?
Oh, gosh. There have been more than 4,000 events ? and our eyes are focused on the number 5,000, which is quickly approaching. Each one tells a story of love, compassion, and caring for others. Together, they weave a tapestry that covers my soul and helps me grieve. The stories that come from each event are awe-inspiring and help me to continue moving forward. I still open every piece of mail we receive, which is something that is so important to me. And whether it?s a child hosting an event or an adult or a business or a school or community group, they all say the same thing. They all say ?thank you? for making them aware of the need surrounding pediatric cancer and an opportunity to get involved. Can you imagine that? People are thanking us for the opportunity to work hard to raise money for us? My goodness!

You have a second cookbook out this year, All the Good Cookies.?Tell us more.
I am so proud of this book! It is a collection of irresistibly delicious cookie recipes that cover every type of cookie lover, including those with nut, gluten, or dairy allergies. It has recipes that are quick and easy, and ones that have as many nuts, fruits, and other wholesomeness that can be packed into a cookie.

Two dear friends, Fraya Berg and Jackie Plant ??who met when they were the food editors at Parents?magazine???worked incredibly hard developing, testing, and testing again until the recipes were perfect. The recipes are the heart of the book, but the soul is found in the more than 40 profiles of the wonderful event hosts across the country.?

Your day job is working at OXO, which has one of my favorite kids??lines, Tot. What are some of the most common frustrations you hear from moms about baby gear?
There was a five-year period at OXO where 25 babies were born, including my son, Liam. There were quite a few new parents experiencing the same frustrations about limitations of baby products. It became the talk around the water cooler: for example, how frustrating it was when you wanted one wipe and instead got something similar to a stream of Tibetan flags. So we invoked the spirit of Sam Farber, who founded the company in 1990, and got to work designing a better mousetrap ? well, in this case, baby products. As consumers, we have become accustomed to accepting the status quo. But at OXO, we take those everyday pet peeves and work on making a product that?s easier to use and therefore makes the experience more enjoyable. And whoever thought you could say that using a mop could be more enjoyable?

You try to achieve work/life balance by: Oh, this makes me laugh. When I figure it out, I?ll tell you! I live a life ruled by passion and love, and find I don?t have much time to worry about work/life balance.

gretchen holt!

Don?t forget to:?Say thank you and make sure people know how much you appreciate them.

Say no to: Being complacent.

Say yes to: Challenging yourself beyond your comfort zone.

The thing no one tells you about parenthood: How incredible children are if we just take the time to really get to know them.

The best piece of parenting advice you?ve received: Let children be children as long as they can be. As a parent, my job is to do the worrying, but my children were responsible for one thing: being children.

Imagine your daughter, Ella, has written a book about you. The title: Love Is All You Need.

Your secret remedy for the common cold: My mom.

Your favorite cookie baking memory:?How much Liam loved to be in the kitchen with me. I couldn?t make anything without him wanting to be by my side. If the stand mixer was out, Liam was there regardless of how he felt. He loved to bake because baking to him was his way of showing his love.

I?m just starting to get out of the pureed baby food stage for my son. Any tips or recommendations?
Graduate to the coarse setting on the food mill or ricer and try everything! You?d be amazed at what budding palates will take a liking to.

gretchen holt!

Your go-to sunscreen: Anything on the Environmental Working Group?s website that has a rating of 2 or lower.

S?mores or ice cream?
Ice cream ? every day.

Favorite beauty item in your makeup bag: It?s a tie. Argan oil or my favorite mascara, Lanc?me D?finicils.

Kiddie bedtime book: The Curious Garden and The Cloud Spinner. They are Ella?s go-to books when she wants to be comforted.

Your summer beach read: You won?t believe it, but I?m totally into The Emperor of All Maladies,?which is the history of cancer and dedicated to a child. The first time I read the dedication, I cried.

Go-to baby gift: OXO Tot feeding spoons, an OXO Tot wipes dispenser, and a stack of fashionable burp cloths.

Go-to family dinner: Neither Liam nor Ella liked red meat, so ours tend to be bean burritos. For Ella, it would be anything with cheese, which is the center of her food universe.

App: Without a doubt, NPR. Love that app ? couldn?t live without it.

On your bedside table: The Emperor of All Maladies and my thyroid medicine, which I?m always forgetting to take!

Meatball the bear approved for Glendale parade float at 2014 Rose Parade

A problem California black bear that gained a nickname and celebrity by stealing meatballs from a Southern California garage freezer will be portrayed on a 2014 Rose Parade float.

The Glendale City Council Tuesday approved an artist's rendering for a city float that depicts a mechanical Meatball the bear popping up and down from a trash can, wearing the lid as a hat.

The float design, called "Let's Be Neighbors," also includes other wildlife, including a skunk and coyote.

The foothill suburb has appropriated $155,000 and is seeking public donations for the city's 100th entry in neighboring Pasadena's Tournament of Roses.

Meatball was tranquilized twice after being found foraging through backyards and returned to the Angeles National Forest, but he kept returning to Glendale. He was captured last year and shipped to a sanctuary in Alpine, where he lives today.

Former congressman Anthony Weiner admits to new 'texts and photos'

Donald Traill / AP

Anthony Weiner and wife Huma Abedin attend the Jamaica Jerk Festival at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on July 21.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after a sexting scandal, admitted Tuesday that his Internet shenanigans didn?t stop when he stepped down in disgrace.

Hours after a gossip website published raunchy texts and explicit photos it said were from 2012, Weiner held an extraordinary press conference ? accompanied by his wife Huma Abedin, an aide to Hillary Clinton ? to apologize and ask voters for a second chance.

"Some of these things happened before my resignation. Some of them happened after," Weiner said without providing any specifics.

New York City's mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner and his wife speak to the media about the new release of photos and texts saying that those actions are behind him and he hopes that New Yorkers continue to give him a second chance.

And in her first public remarks on the scandal, a clearly nervous Abedin said it took ?a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy? to put her marriage back together.

"It was not an easy choice in any way but I made the decision that it was worth staying in this marriage,? she said. ?I didn?t know how it would work out but I did know that I wanted to give it a try.

"I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him,? she added. ?And, as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward.?

Weiner called the press conference after a gossip website called The Dirty published an interview with an anonymous woman who claimed she had an online relationship with him between July and November 2012 ? more than a year after his resignation.

BigGovernment.com via AP

This undated photo taken from the website BigGovernment.com purports to show former Rep. Anthony Weiner shirtless.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have," said Weiner, who has been leading some polls for the Democratic nomination for mayor and balked at calls from opponents to drop out of the race.

"While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me," he said, calling it ?problematic to say the least and destructive to say the most."

Weiner had even told NBC 4 New York in April, as he was weighing a mayoral bid, that there could be more revelations coming.

"Some things may come out that are true," he said at the time. "Some things are not.?... Basically, New Yorkers know the story. I did it. I did it with multiple people. These things were wrong and inappropriate, and I never should have been dishonest about it. They played out in the most public and embarrassing way possible. And that?s it."

On Monday, the Dirty claimed that Weiner ? who allegedly used the alias Carlos Danger ? met the unnamed 22-year-old woman on the social-networking site Formspring in July 2012, sent her lewd photos and had phone sex with her before the relationship "fizzled."

He promised her a job and a condo, said the site, which posted pictures of body parts and graphic messages about sex acts.

"Even post scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him," the woman was quoted as saying. "I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic."

Weiner was a six-term congressman representing the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and Abedin was pregnant when a photo he sent on Twitter ? of himself in his underwear ? sparked an uproar in the late spring of 2011.

After initially denying it was him in the picture or that he sent it, Weiner eventually came clean, confessing that he had carried on "inappropriate" conversations through Twitter, Facebook, email and the phone with six women over three years.

But less than two years after the stunning fall from grace, Weiner, 48, appeared to be in the midst of a remarkable, and carefully orchestrated, comeback.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., announces his resignation from Congress after previously admitting that he sent inappropriate pictures from his social media account.

Two months after he announced a return from political exile to run for his hometown's biggest job, he was near or at the top in several polls, despite a barrage of pun-filled front-page headlines focusing on his salacious history.

It's unclear if the admission his reckless behavior continued after it was first exposed will hurt his standing with voters, but three mayoral contenders have already urged Weiner to withdraw from the race.

"The sideshows of this election have gotten in the way of the debate we should be having about the future of this city," said Bill de Blasio, one of his Democratic contenders. "And yes, I'm talking about Anthony Weiner.? Enough is enough."

Weiner said he had no intention of calling it quits. He?s one of several politicians caught up in sex scandals who are mounting comebacks ? including former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who is running for city comptroller five years after a romp with a prostitute was revealed.

With just 49 days to go before the Democratic primary in the mayoral race, Weiner said he was surprised ?that more things didn?t come out sooner.?

He apologized several times to Abedin and to anyone he ever sexted, took full responsibility for the sexting and said he didn?t blame anyone for being ?curious? about it.

Upbeat earnings push FTSE to near seven-week highs

By Sudip Kar-Gupta

LONDON (Reuters) - A wave of upbeat corporate earnings pushed the FTSE 100 back towards seven-week highs on Wednesday, with some traders betting on more near-term gains for the market.

The FTSE 100 index was up by 0.7 percent, or 44.94 points, at 6,642.38 points in early session trading - pushing it towards its highest level since around late May.

European equity markets received a further boost from data showing the private sector in Germany - the euro zone's economic powerhouse - expanded for a third consecutive month in July.

Budget airline easyJet topped the FTSE 100's leaderboard with a 5.9 percent rise on stronger-than-expected profit guidance, and chip designer ARM rose 1.9 percent after forecast-beating profits.

Traders also pointed to forecast-beating iPhone sales from Apple overnight, which ARM supplies with chips, as further lifting the tech sector.

Securequity sales trader Jawaid Afsar said investors were prepared to overlook fresh signs of Wednesday of a manufacturing slowdown in China, the world's second-biggest economy, to focus on the wave of reassuring corporate results.

"We've had good numbers from Apple, easyJet and ARM. People are still more on the side of being bullish. I still favour the upside," he said.

Afsar and EGR Broking's managing director Kyri Kangellaris said they would look to see if the FTSE 100 could rise beyond its 2013 peak of 6,875.62 points hit in May to gauge the strength and momentum of the rally so far in July.

"Topping out around 6,750 points could mark the extent of this move up," said Afsar.

The FTSE 100 fell back in June due to expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve would gradually scale back economic stimulus measures that had driven much of the equity rally.

The FTSE is up around 13 percent since the start of 2013 but some 3 percent below the May peak. "I'm still uncertain over the momentum behind this rally," said Kangellaris.

Obama's latest economic push has familiar feel

WASHINGTON (AP) -- If President Barack Obama's new focus on the economy sounds familiar, that's because he's done it before.

Since the first year of his presidency, Obama has been launching ? and re-launching ? initiatives on the economy. Some came with new policy proposals, others with catchy slogans.

Remember 2011's "Winning the Future" campaign? Or the "We Can't Wait" initiatives that followed later that year? Just a few months ago, Obama was headlining the "Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour."

So far there's no slogan attached to the White House's latest initiative, which kicks off Wednesday in Galesburg, Ill. The president's advisers are billing his remarks as a major address on the economy, though no new initiatives are expected to be announced.

"I'm going to talk about where we need to go from here, how we need to put behind us the distractions and the phony debates and nonsense that somehow passes for politics these days, and get back to basics," Obama said Monday as he addressed Organizing for Action, the non-profit group backing his agenda.

Obama said Wednesday's speech would kick off a months-long effort to refocus on the economy and start exploring "some big and bold ideas" ? some he's offered previously, and some new ones, too. Aides said those fresh policy proposals would come in a series of follow-up speeches planned through September, most of which will be narrowly targeted on issues like housing, retirement security and expanding access to education.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's repeated attempts to orient his public agenda on the economy should serve as a reminder that "the president has always been focused on these issues."

"That doesn't mean we don't need to continue to remind people that improving the economic situation in America is the principle reason why our fellow citizens elect and send people to Washington," Carney said.

But congressional Republicans, who continue to be a roadblock for many of the president's economic proposals, dismissed the White House's new public relations push as a retread of old ideas.

"We've seen this song and dance before," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "Whether it's his health care law, his job-destroying energy policies, or the mountain of regulations piling up, it's the president's own policies that are responsible for this new normal of weak economic growth and high unemployment."

Still, the timing of Obama's latest economic initiative underscores the degree to which jobs and growth have been overshadowed in Washington since the president began his second term. That's been driven in part by the White House, which has invested significant time on other areas of the president's agenda, including the failed effort to enact stricter gun laws and the push for immigration reform, which succeeded in the Senate but faces an uncertain future in the House.

"Here's the thing: It will be a pretty good speech," Obama said. "But I've given some pretty good speeches before. And things still get stuck here in Washington, which is why I'm going to need your help."

A series of foreign policy crises, like the Syrian civil war and Egyptian coup, have also competed for the White House's attention. So have a flurry of recent controversies, including the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of political groups, the Justice Department's seizure of journalists' phone records, and renewed attention on the investigation into the deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.

All the while, the economy has slowly but steadily improved. The housing market is coming back, the stock market is on the rise and consumer confidence is near its highest levels of Obama's presidency. Nationwide unemployment is also falling, though at 7.6 percent, it still remains high.

But a new round of fiscal deadlines threaten to upend that progress, adding urgency to the White House's desire to get the economy back on Washington's radar ? while at the same time trying to get the public to side with the president's economic vision.

The potential fiscal showdown in September will focus on the debt ceiling and the automatic federal budget cuts that kicked in earlier this year. Obama wants to end the cuts before they extend into the next fiscal year. And some Republicans want more deficit reduction in exchange for raising the nation's borrowing limit, a bargain Obama says he would not back.

Obama's aides say that while Wednesday's address and subsequent events will touch on the looming fiscal fights, they say they do not see the speech as a legislative negotiating tactic. Nor will the president lay out an economic "to-do" list for Congress, reflecting the White House's recognition that many of the president's proposals would almost certainly face opposition on Capitol Hill, particularly in the Republican-led House.

And that dynamic, just like Obama's repeated economic PR campaigns, may again leave the public with a feeling that they've been here before.

What's in a royal name? Lots of tradition

LONDON (AP) ? When it comes to the royal baby, choosing just one name won't do. You need about three or four.

Just ask the father, William Arthur Philip Louis. Or the grandfather, Charles Philip Arthur George. Or the great-grandmother, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.

"I think because the child is going to be the third in line to the throne, they have to maintain all this tradition," said Pauline Maclaran, a professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway and the co-author of the upcoming book, "Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture."

"They'll go for three or four names and ... be able to make the right nod to the right people," she said.

And it can't just be any old moniker, either. It has to have some gravitas: Noble names are steeped in history, which explains why thousands of bets have rolled in to British bookmakers for Alexandra and James.

Alexandra appears to be a good bet. It's the name of Queen Elizabeth II's great-grandmother, a Danish princess who married Edward VII. And the queen's name includes Alexandra, as well as Mary, her grandmother. James and George are big choices on the male side ? as there's strong precedent of kings of that name.

Albert Mehrabian, a professor emeritus of psychology at UCLA and an expert on names, firmly voted for James ? which far outdistanced George in the popularity stakes.

"Names make impressions, good and bad," he said. "Among all the names I've studied, James rated the highest."

Mary was among the top rated for girls, though Alexandra also scored well, he said.

Maclaran is betting against a girl having the first name of Diana ? even though Prince William has been eager to include his beloved mother in other aspects of his marriage to Kate. He gave her Diana's engagement ring.

Maclaran said that giving a girl her late grandmother's name would constitute an undue burden because the public and media would constantly compare her to the glamorous late princess.

"That would be a lot of baggage on the child," she said. "They wouldn't want that."

She said one of the secondary names might be Diana, as that would give the young princess a nod to her ancestors.

The name can also take on cultural significance. Arthur, the middle names of both Prince Charles and Prince William, evokes the legendary King Arthur and tales of chivalry ? a favorite theme ingrained in British literature.

Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936, was christened Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David ? the last four were patron saints of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales respectively.

The public may have to wait, though. It is not uncommon for the palace to take its time to choose just the right name.

But is it possible that William and the former Kate Middleton might break with tradition and call their child something trendy and unexpected? The grandchildren of Princess Anne, the queen's only daughter, are called Savannah and Isla.

But those closer to the throne normally don't have such freedom.

"They'll try and choose something that reflects tradition acceptable to their peer group ? like Charlotte, which can be shortened to Charlie," Maclaran said. "It won't be any kind of celebrity name ? like Tiger Lily."

That probably also excludes John Paul George Ringo.
