Ronaldo says Spanish league is best

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:08 a.m. ET Dec. 28, 2011

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo prefers Spain's La Liga over the English Premier League because he says it allows individual players to shine.

Ronaldo, who played for Manchester United for six years before joining Real Madrid, said he "learned the elementary and basic rules of football, especially discipline" while in England. But he said La Liga was the best league in the world because it "relies on players' skills and techniques."

Ronaldo spoke Wednesday at the Dubai International Sports Conference.

Ronaldo is the Spanish league's top scorer this year and says he has no intention of leaving Spain. While insisting he could adapt to any league, Ronald said he wants to stay at Real Madrid, adding "frankly I'm just enjoying the moment."

Sexual assault reports rise at military academies. How is Pentagon responding? (The Christian Science Monitor)

Washington ? There has been a worrisome increase in the number of sexual assaults reported at America?s military academies, according to a congressionally mandated study released Tuesday by the Pentagon.

?One sexual assault is too many,? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a statement in the wake of the study ? which found a 65 percent increase in reported incidents of sexual harassment and violence between 2010 and 2011. ?We treat each other with dignity in this institution. I expect everyone in this department to live up to that high standard.?

The Defense Department said it was implementing some changes in policy in the wake of the study findings, including new policies that senior defense officials said were meant to improve the treatment of assault victims at the academies.

IN PICTURES: Military women of the world

However the most concrete policy change, which facilitates the speedy transfer of assault victims should they wish, also obliges them to surrender a degree of protective anonymity.

The study found that there had been 65 reports of sexual assaults at the academies between 2010 and 2011, compared to 41 the previous year. It did not specify whether the number of reported incidents was indicative of a wider unreported problem, as is often the case with sexual assaults.

Mr. Panetta called the increase in sexual assault reports ?a leadership issue, first and foremost, so I expect us to lead with integrity and with energy to eliminate sexual assault and harassment from our culture.?

To this end, Pentagon officials are asking the academies to develop methods and metrics to evaluate sexual assault initiatives.

Advocates of sexual assault victims question why such metrics have not been developed earlier.

Part of the problem, they say, is that the Pentagon itself does not conduct any military-wide surveys on the incidences of sexual assault. Instead, defense officials release the number of official sexual assault reports they have received. If those figures go up, defense officials often argue that it simply means victims are more comfortable seeking help than before.

The Air Force recently commissioned its own Gallup poll of sexual assault throughout the force, the first service to do this. It found one in five women had been the victim of sexual assault.

Many of these statistics mirror the experiences of the general US population, say defense officials. ?We know that the military academies are similar to college campuses around the country in that sexual harassment and assault are challenges that all faculty, staff, and students need to work to prevent,? adds Maj. Gen. Kay Hertog, director of the Pentagon?s Sexual Assault Prevention Office.

Yet assault within the service academies is particularly egregious, argues Greg Jacob, policy director for the Service Women?s Action Network. Though ?military service academies are similar to civilian universities and colleges in their student demographics, in other ways they are unique.?

That?s because the ?vast majority? of higher-echelon officers come from the academies and ?are in charge of developing implementing and enforcing sexual harassment and assault policies in today?s military,? Mr. Jacob notes. ?Ending the widespread issue of sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military starts by ending it at the service academies.?

In the meantime, a new Pentagon policy provides for the expedited transfer of those who have been the victim of sexual assault to be transferred, should they so wish.

The problem, some point out, is that in order to qualify for such a transfer, victims must file what the military calls an ?unrestricted report,? which requires a commander to launch a military criminal investigation, rather than a ?restricted report,? which allows the victim to remain anonymous.

The report found some positive developments at the academies. West Point named its superintendent to chair the Sexual Assault Review Board ?to ensure the highest-level awareness of the academy?s cases,? according to the Defense Department?s release. The Naval Academy established a therapist-led support group, and the Air Force Academy created an electronic reporting program to ?improve its 24/7 response capability.?

?We owe it to those who have been victimized, and to every cadet and midshipman," Maj. Gen. Hertog said, "to do everything possible to provide needed support and to hold those who commit sexual assault appropriately accountable.?

High School Launching New Communications Program ...

The future writers, broadcasters, editors and radio personalities of Collingswood have a lot to celebrate in 2012.

During this month's meeting, Collingswood High School Principal Edward T. Hill gave a presentation to members of Collingswood Public School District Board of Education. The topic? Communications.

"One program we're excited about (at the high school) is our new media and communications program," said Hill. "It's a school-choice program, limited to students who want to be a part of it. (For students,) it'll be like (being a communications) major?in high school."

Next year, interested students may opt to be part of the program, which Hill said will give them a professional advantage post-graduation.

"(Because of this program), when our students graduate high school, they'll have the tools necessary to be successful in the area of communications, so that in college, they'll already have knowledge and field experience ," said Hill.

According to Hill, Collingswood High School's new communications program will allow 15 students to take Television I, II, III, and IV courses. Electives will also be available, including classes like Journalism, Graphic Arts, Public Speaking, and Photography.

Hill said administration will use a selection process to determine which students may participate.

"Interested students will fill out applications?which will include recommendations?and will be interviewed by our department chair," said Hill.

During their senior year, communications students will get the opportunity to take internships related to a specialized field in the industry.

"Rowan University is interested in developing an articulation agreement with our high school," said Hill.

According to the principal, besides Sterling, no other high school in the area offer students access to specialized experience in communications.

Even the borough's pre-high school students will be able to try their hand in the world of media. Next year, Hill said Collingswood Middle School eighth- and ninth-graders will be eligible for the communications program.

While the new program will offer students media experience they wouldn't otherwise be exposed to at other schools, Collingswood High School had an impressive list of media outlets before the communications track even existed.

High-schoolers have always had access to editorial positions on the school yearbook committee, which has students writing, designing page layouts, using artistic abilities, editing text, and manipulating photos.

The Paw Print?the high school newspaper, which is published five times each year?is another preexisting media opportunity, which involved students reporting on school news, taking photos, and practicing newspaper layout and design.

Two television-based opportunities preceded the new communications program as well: the WCHS Television Club, and the school TV station, PAWS TV.

WCHS club members use computer software to edit and produce videos, which are broadcast in town and at school events.

PAWS TV has students producing programs for Collingswood TV, by heading preproduction, film editing, and broadcasting.

But Collingswood High School's new communications program will add even more niche-specific facets of communications an already-impressive media roster.

"Will it work?" Hill asked, referring to the new program. "I think the excitement about it at our school says, 'yes.'"

Apple saw record sales this holiday season, 12 times the amount of activations on Christmas Day

December 27, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Apple saw record-setting sales this holiday season,?according?to?Localytics. So well, that 12.5 times more iOS devices were activated over Christmas than past weekends. For comparison sake: there were?21 times more iPods compared to 14 times more iPhones. The iPods were most likely gifted to younger children who do not yet have a cell phone. At any rate? there were many people enjoying iOS devices on Christmas Day.

Apple is said to have another record setting quarter after a very?successful?fiscal Q4 for the company.?The last earnings report?said?Apple claimed $28.27 billion in revenue and saw record-setting Mac and iPhone sales. The holiday quarter is expected to be even better.

Apple is set to have its best year ever in its App Store with approximately 10 billion downloads in 2011, along with a record-setting holiday season.?That estimate doubles collective downloads from the three years prior, according to research firm Flurry.?The report noted the Android Market hit 10 billion cumulative downloads in December, up from 3 billion total downloads in May 2011.

Flurry also backs up Localytics claim and said Christmas Day 2011s activations crushed Christmas Day 2010s by almost 2.5 times. This year, 6.8 million iOS devices were activated, while last year?saw 2.8 million device activations?a 140 percent growth. We are looking forward to hearing what Apple has to say in late January.

In comparison to Android?

Apple saw similar sales. Interestingly, the sales for both platforms differentiate between region? as seen in the graph below:

Reuters Columnist: Economy Would Be Better Off If Fed-Ex Workers Had a Union Like UPS- 12/28/11

12/27/2011

By Doug Cunningham

Reuters columnist David Kay Johnston says if it were as easy to organize a union at Fed-Ex as it is at UPS, workers and the economy would be better off with the union advantage. Johnston says Fed-Ex has a special exemption under labor law and isn't covered under the National Labor relations Act. The UPS Teamsters union workers earn $12-18 more per hour in wages and benefits than Fed-Ex workers do.

[David Cay Johnston]: "The biggest problem in our economy right now is lack of demand. Workers don't make enough money, and enough workers don't have jobs to sustain the economy. A big reason for that is that companies like Fed-Ex that get special treatment have persuaded Congress that making them be on equal footing with their competitors would damage the economy overall."

Metadherin mediates lipopolysaccharide-induced migration and invasion of breast cancer cells.

Source

Department of Breast Surgery, Shandong University School of Medicine, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women worldwide and metastatic breast cancer has very poor prognosis. Inflammation has been implicated in migration and metastasis of breast cancer, although the exact molecular mechanism remains elusive.

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

We show that the pro-inflammatory endotoxin Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) upregulates the expression of Metadherin (MTDH), a recently identified oncogene, in a number of breast cancer lines. Stable knockdown of MTDH by shRNA in human breast MDA-MB-231 cells abolishes LPS-induced cell migration and invasion as determined by several in vitro assays. In addition, knockdown of MTDH diminishes Nuclear Factor-kappa B (NF-?B) activation by LPS and inhibited LPS-induced IL-8 and MMP-9 production.

CONCLUSIONS:

These results strongly suggest that MTDH is a pivotal molecule in inflammation-mediated tumor metastasis. Since NF-?B, IL-8 and MMP-9 play roles in LPS-induced invasion or metastasis, the mechanism of MTDH-promoted invasion and metastasis may be through the activation of NF-?B, IL-8 and MMP-9, also suggesting a role of MTDH in regulating both inflammatory responses and inflammation-associated tumor invasion. These findings indicate that MTDH is involved in inflammation-induced tumor progression, and support that MTDH targeting therapy may hold promising prospects in treating breast cancer.

5 die of food poisoning at Mexican rehab center (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Medical officials say five recovering drug addicts died and dozens of others were sickened by soy sausage served for Christmas dinner at a rehabilitation center in western Mexico.

Authorities were investigating whether the poisoning at the center in the city of Guadalajara was accidental or intentional. Drug cartels have taken over rehabilitation centers in parts of Mexico, forcibly recruiting addicts as hit men and smugglers. The invasions have led to mass shootings at the centers that have left dozens dead.

Alhy Daniel Nunez is a spokesman for the Red Cross in the western state of Jalisco, where Guadalajara is located. He said Monday that 37 people remained hospitalized, three of them in serious condition.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.

Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.

"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the `A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.

Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.

"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think `Why me?' I am not rich."

But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.

Stratfor said in an email to members, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers, that it had hired a "leading identity theft protection and monitoring service" on behalf of the Stratfor members affected by the attack. The company said it will send another email on services for affected members by Wednesday.

Stratfor acknowledged that an "unauthorized party" had revealed personal information and credit card data of some of its members.

The company had sent another email to subscribers earlier in the day saying it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Queen Elizabeth visits husband in hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Queen Elizabeth II paid a quick visit on Saturday to her husband, who is recovering from a heart operation at a hospital in Cambridge.

Prince Philip, 90, was taken to the hospital from the queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk late Friday after experiencing chest pains. He had a coronary stent put in after tests found a blocked artery was to blame, though the palace has refused to say if he suffered a heart attack.

Elizabeth was flown in by helicopter and arrived at Papworth Hospital, some 70 miles (113 kilometers) from London, in a Range Rover. She was accompanied by two of her children, Princess Anne and Prince Edward. After a short visit, the royals were seen boarding the helicopter back to Sandringham.

Buckingham Palace said Philip "had a good night."

Doctors said Philip could have suffered a heart attack, but without more information it was impossible to know for sure.

Coronary stenting is standard procedure both to fend off a heart attack or save a patient already in the midst of one, said Dr. Allan Schwartz, chief of cardiology at New York-Presbyterian, Columbia University Medical Center.

Philip has been known to enjoy good health throughout his life and rarely misses royal engagements. Upon his 90th birthday in June, he announced plans to cut back his official duties.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron offered his support to Philip.

"The Prime Minister has been kept informed of the situation and wishes the Duke of Edinburgh a very speedy recovery," Cameron's office said.

The palace said it does not know when Philip will be released, only that he is having a "short stay" in the hospital.

Philip had been at Sandringham, the queen's sprawling rural estate in Norfolk, since Monday for the royal family's Christmas festivities.

The palace said Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family will attend church as usual on Sunday.

Another key part of the royal family's Christmas celebrations is the queen's annual message to the nation, which this year will focus on family and community.

The queen has made a prerecorded Christmas broadcast on radio since 1952 and on television since 1957. She writes the speeches herself, and the broadcasts mark the rare occasion on which the queen voices her own opinion without government consultation.

Kindle Fire update, live today, should improve performance

The Kindle Fire update should 'enhance fluidity and performance,' Amazon reps announced.?

Back in November, Amazon released the Kindle Fire. Critics were mostly impressed. Sales went through the roof. And soon thereafter, the inevitable problems emerged: There were complaints browsing speed, about the placement of the "off" switch, and the?Fat Finger Fire Dilemma. In response, Amazon reps announced they would release a new software update, intended to "improve performance" on the Fire.?

Today, that update ? version?6.2.1 ? is available for free download. According to Amazon,?the new software, which should automatically be delivered to Kindle Fire devices, "enhances fluidity and performance, improves touch navigation responsiveness, gives you the option to choose which items display on the carousel, and adds the ability to add a password lock on Wi-Fi access."?

(If you're having trouble accessing the update, you can navigate to this?landing page, and click the blue link under the image of the Fire.)

So does the update actually answer user complaints? Well, yes, mostly. "The updated device did immediately and noticeably respond better to the touch, with few of the lags that had bothered buyers in previous versions of the software," notes Hayley?Tsukayama of the Washington Post. And over at Mashable,?Lance Ulanoff says version 6.2.1 improves problems with the carousel ? the digital display case containing Amazon content.?

"Immediately, I could see and feel the difference," Ulanoff writes. "Most screen interactions were smoother and, finally, the carousel was in my control. I had no trouble finding and selecting whatever I wanted ? no more icons racing by before I could select them. The update also gave me the ability to remove items from the carousel ? which I began doing immediately."

U.N. condemns Damascus bombs, expresses grave concern (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The United Nations expressed grave concern about twin suicide car bombings in Damascus and condemned the attacks that killed 44 people and lent a grim new face to the uprising in Syria.

With world powers arguing about details of a U.N. resolution on Syria, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate end to the bloodshed and urged the Syrian government to implement a peace plan proposed by the Arab League.

The first batch of 50 Arab League monitors will head to Syria on Monday to assess whether Damascus is abiding by an Arab peace plan, Egypt's state news agency reported on Friday.

European and U.S. officials want the U.N. Security Council to impose an arms embargo and other sanctions on Syria's government because of its nine-month-old crackdown on protesters against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, which U.N. officials say has killed more than 5,000 people.

The suicide bombs, aimed at two security buildings, sent human limbs flying and streets in Syria's capital were littered with human remains and the blackened hulk of cars.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi said the attacks were carried out by "terrorists (trying) to sabotage the will for change" in Syria, and followed warnings from Lebanon that al Qaeda fighters had infiltrated Syria from Lebanese territory.

Some of Assad's opponents said the suicide attacks could have been staged by the government itself.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the "terrorist attacks."

"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and ... any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable," its statement said.

"EXTREME OPPOSITION"

Western powers say government security forces have been responsible for most of the violence in Syria. But Russia, an old ally of Damascus, wants any resolution to be even-handed.

"If the requirement is that we drop all reference to violence coming from extreme opposition, that's not going to happen," U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin said in New York after Russia submitted a revised draft resolution to the council.

"If they expect us to have arms embargo, that's not going to happen," he said. "We know what arms embargo means these days. It means that - we saw it in Libya - that you cannot supply weapons to the government but everybody else can supply weapons to various opposition groups."

German Ambassador Peter Wittig said the latest Russian draft did not go far enough. "We need to put the weight of the council behind the Arab League," he said.

"That includes the demands to release political prisoners, that includes a clear signal for accountability for those who have perpetrated human rights violations."

Assad has used tanks and troops to try to crush the street protests inspired by other Arab uprisings this year. Such rallies are now increasingly eclipsed by an armed insurgency against his security apparatus.

But Friday's blasts signaled a dramatic escalation.

"It's a new phase. We're getting militarized here," said Joshua Landis, a Syria expert at the University of Oklahoma who felt Friday's bombs were a "small premonition" of what may come in a country that some analysts see slipping towards civil war.

"This is when the Syrian opposition is beginning to realize they are on their own," he added, referring to Western reluctance to intervene militarily in Syria.

MANGLED BODIES

The interior ministry spokesman said 166 people were wounded by the Damascus explosions. It broadcast footage of mangled bodies being carried in blankets and stretchers into ambulances, a row of corpses wrapped in sheets lying in the street.

The United States condemned the attacks, saying there was "no justification for terrorism of any kind" and that the work of the Arab League should not be hindered.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Al Qaeda are Sunni Muslim militants. Assad and Syria's power elite belong to the Alawite branch of Shi'ite Islam while the majority of Syrians, including protesters and insurgents, are Sunnis.

"I'm defending my people," Ali, 45, an Alawite factory worker issued by police with a gun which he has used against protesters in the city of Homs, said in comments passed on to Reuters. "We can't let them topple the regime, they'll go after us and kill us all."

Syria has generally barred foreign media from the country, making it hard to verify accounts of events from either side.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 15 civilians were killed outside the capital on Friday, eight of them in Homs.

The Arab League peace plan stipulates a withdrawal of troops from protest-hit cities and towns, release of prisoners and dialogue with the opposition.

Damascus says more than 1,000 prisoners have been freed since the Arab plan was agreed and the army has pulled out of cities. Anti-Assad activists say no such pullout has occurred.

Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Alao said on Saturday that his country's oil production had fallen by about 30 to 35 percent as a result of sanctions imposed on Syria over its crackdown.

The European Union has stepped up its sanctions against Syria's oil industry, including blacklisting state-owned firms. The Arab League has also imposed sanctions on financial and other dealings with Syria.

D.C. Attorney General Announces Southwest Community House Association in Receivership

From?Ted Gest:

District of Columbia Attorney General Irvin Nathan announced yesterday that Southwest Community House Association, a social services organization in D.C. since 1901, has been placed in receivership.? The receiver, Lisa Burford, was appointed on December 14 by Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman and charged with recommending a ?plan, if feasible, for returning [the association] to its nonprofit purposes of providing vital services to low and moderate income residents in the Southwest D.C. community.?

?

Southwest Community House Association consented to the receivership, which the District requested in a civil complaint alleging that the association, after suffering a series of financial and legal setbacks, failed ?to maintain a presence in Southwest D.C. for the benefit of the community it was established to serve, and historically did serve.?? The District said in its complaint that the association?s access to grants ? its primary source of funding ? was cut off in 2006, after an audit of its finances showed irregularities.

?

In mid-2006, Southwest Community House Association sold its only asset, a building at 156 Q Street, S.W.? Since then, the association has not maintained an office and has not engaged in or supported substantial charitable activity.? The lawsuit followed an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General into the association's corporate management and finances.

?

The Attorney General is authorized by the District law to seek a receivership over a nonprofit corporation that continues to act contrary to its nonprofit purposes.? The receiver, Ms. Burford, is a D.C.-based consultant for nonprofit organizations.

California woman indicted on terrorism-support charges (Reuters)

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) ? A federal grand jury in Los Angeles has indicted a Turkish national on terrorism-support charges for allegedly wiring money to Pakistan to help fund attacks against American military personnel.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, of La Palma, California, a permanent resident of the United States, used Western Union to wire more than $2,000 from a grocery store in Buena Park to a person in Pakistan, prosecutors said late Wednesday. They also say she knew the money would be used for attacks on U.S. military personnel and other people overseas.

Court documents state that Mihalik, a pharmacist who worked at CVS, made three wire transfers - $750, $600, and $700 - to Pakistan in December 2010 and January 2011. They said the first wire was made in her name, but the latter two were made using the alias "Cindy Palmer."

While Mihalik printed the name "Cindy Palmer" as the sender of the final two wires, Western Union receipts reveal she always signed her real name, according to an affidavit filed by investigators.

The affidavit said that when sending the first transfer, Mihalik gave the Western Union agent a New York telephone number as her contact number. That number was linked to her husband's cellular phone.

It adds that investigators believe Mihalik's marriage, which led to her status as a permanent resident, was a sham.

Court documents do not identify the recipient of the alleged wire transfers, nor do they name any suspected terrorist organizations.

Mihalik has been in federal custody since she was arrested on a false statements charge on August 27 while preparing to board a flight to Turkey and with a one-way ticket, court documents state.

They said Mihalik told federal agents she did not intend to return to the United States and that she had called to say goodbye to her husband.

Mihalik's lawyer has denied the charges against her.

If convicted, she could face decades in prison.

Hingis high on Kvitova, not on Woz?s coach
Ticker ? Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Martina Hingis, who is now a coach at the Paris-based Patrick Mouratoglou academy, tells L?Equipe that Czech Petra Kvitova is the player who most appeals to her the most as she is ?very solid, left-handed ? and is the only one I really like to watch. With others, it is monotonous. [Caroline Wozniacki] may moving better than the others, and she tries to go inside the court, but not often enough. The fact that she does not win Grand Slams is not only her problem, but also that of her coach.? Wozniacki? is coached by her father, Piotr, as well as the adidas Player Development staff, and she recently hired another coach, Ricardo Sanchez.

The 31-year-old Hingid added that she loves coaching and is trying to teach the young likes of Daria Gavrilova, Yulia Putintseva, Naomi Broadly and Sachia Vickery to keep moving forward.

France weighs removal of risky breast implants (AP)

PARIS ? French health authorities are considering a call by leading doctors to tell an estimated 30,000 women to get their breast implants removed amid warnings about health risks.

Officials from the Health Ministry are meeting Friday to decide what to recommend for women who have silicon implants made by French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP.

Some doctors say the implants pose a risk of rupture. A French cancer institute is also studying whether there are links between the implants and eight women who developed cancer after receiving them.

Some 40,000 women in Britain are believed to have the PIP implants as well. Britain's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said its own testing had found no evidence of toxicity in the PIP implants and no evidence to suggest women should have them removed.
