Bison migration triggers annual hunting season

For the wild bison herds of Yellowstone National Park, home on the range may be a little less cosy this time of year. Several hundred bison could be culled in a controversial programme aimed at limiting the spread of disease to cattle as the herds migrate out of the park's high altitudes and down into the warmer climes of Montana.

The state has approved the annual cull to reduce the chance of spreading brucellosis, which can cause miscarriage, to cattle. The disease has been eradicated in the US except in the Yellowstone region.

In a proposal obtained by the Associated Press, state officials have called for the removal of 200 female bison, 50 calves, 50 yearlings, and 60 bull bison. They may be shot by hunters or captured for relocation or slaughter, with animals that test positive for disease exposure being targeted for slaughter.

But others say the threat of brucellosis transmission is overblown. Stephany Seay, a spokeswoman for the Buffalo Field Campaign, told West Yellowstone News that the cull is "a political tactic used by the cattle industry to maintain control over land use. In fact, there has never been a documented case of wild bison transmitting brucellosis in the state of Montana."

The first bison has already been taken down 16 kilometres outside of West Yellowstone, Montana, by first-time bison hunter Bobby Sutton. Sutton estimated the animal weighed about 800 kilograms.

Tens of millions of bison once roamed North America, but only about 20,000 wild bison remain.

Private Money Investing-how To Get The Best Use Out Of This Form ...

Private money investing involves dealing with real estate companies, entertainment, retail and several other businesses. It basically involves two parties: the borrower and the lender. The lender becomes the investor.

The borrower receives money based on the value of real estate owned by him. Private individuals, trusts and pension funds can try their luck on private money investing. Substantial knowledge and experience of trust deed investing is required and mostly individual investors are good at it.

Everyone wants their money to grow and this is why this form of investing is such a desirable form of investing now. First, their investment in real estate will always pay off. Secondly, it will give regular income derived from the monthly dividend distribution scheme and thirdly, higher results than those available from investing in stocks and bonds. There is something called investor eligibility that you need to meet for this form of investing, and that is determined once you meet the minimum net worth requirements.

Private money investing involves many technicalities i.e. the lending process, funding and underwriting that one must be aware of. Methods of investments: Fractional method, Mortgage fund investment, Equity ownership etc.

Things to consider before venturing out into private money investing:

The amount of investment that is being asked, the value of the property that is pledged, description of the property, negotiation of suitable terms from either party and the use of funds whether to construct the property or to renovate. This eventually is a risky business so it is important to associate your investment with known construction brands.

Before lending money, several things are taken into account and one of it is to calculate the worth of the real estate piece. The liquid value of the collateral minus debt and liabilities is what investors look at while using private money investing.

Again, it cannot be emphasized enough: focus on one area of investing, and stick with that. For instance, either focus your efforts on real estate, the stock market, mutual funds, etc. don?t try to learn everything about all of them. Follow these important tips, and if you have decided to use private money investing, you will make a fortune with your investing efforts.

Iran defiant after U.N. nuclear resolution (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iranian media on Saturday described a resolution from the U.N. nuclear watchdog expressing "deep and increasing concern" about the country's atomic program as a victory, celebrating the fact it does not call for new U.N. sanctions.

But Washington has already lined up new unilateral sanctions aimed at Iran's multi-billion-dollar petrochemical industry and will pressure its allies to follow suit, sources told Reuters.

"Additional sanctions put on hold," ran the lead headline on Jomhuri-ye Eslami daily.

"Global opposition to U.S. nuclear scenario," read Hamshahri.

"U.S. failure in IAEA's governing board," said Qods, referring to the International Atomic Energy Agency resolution that Washington says upped pressure on Iran.

Russia and China signed up to the resolution calling on Iran to clarify questions over its atomic activities "to exclude the existence of possible military dimensions," but they have resisted pressure from Washington for more UN sanctions.

Iran said the resolution had strengthened its determination to push ahead with the nuclear program it says is aimed solely at power generation and medical and agricultural applications.

Mohammad Javad Larijani, a foreign affairs adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, told PBS television Iran was "100 percent away" from getting nuclear weapons but aimed to have the hypothetical capability to make them as its nuclear know-how increases.

"If you ask in terms of capability, hypothetically, 'is Iran capable to do that if it decides?' Obviously yes. Any country who has nuclear technology is capable of doing that," Larijani said, according to a transcript issued by PBS.

He cited Germany and Japan as countries that had no nuclear weapons but could make them in a matter of months if they wished and said Iran aimed to be more advanced than them.

Iran dismissed a report issued by the IAEA last week that included intelligence indicating Iran had worked on designing an atom bomb as "unprofessional, unbalanced, illegal and politicized" and some Iranian lawmakers are calling for the country to stop all cooperation with the agency.

CONSEQUENCES

In a separate move, the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution on Friday condemning an alleged plot -- blamed by U.S. authorities on Iranian agents -- to kill Saudi Arabia's envoy to the United States, allegations Tehran has dismissed as a fabricated "comedy show."

Amid the rising international heat over its nuclear program, Iran's army said it had started a large-scale, four-day exercise on Friday aimed at testing its defenses.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has sought to play down speculation of possible air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites -- something Washington and Israel have said they do not rule out -- saying such a move could have "unintended consequences" including harming the global economy.

But with Republican presidential hopefuls voicing willingness to get tough on Iran, the political and diplomatic pressure on Iran is set to intensify in the coming months.

While Russian and Chinese resistance has prevented the likelihood of any additions to the existing four rounds of UN sanctions imposed since 2006, sources in Washington said tough new U.S. sanctions could be unveiled as early as Monday.

The new measures would aim to bar foreign companies from aiding Iran's petrochemical industry, with the threat of depriving them of access to the U.S. market. Similar sanctions already stop banks and other financial companies that have business in the United States working with Iran.

The world's fifth-biggest oil exporter is also a major producer of petrochemicals with exports for 2010-2011 worth $8.6 billion, according to the Oil Ministry website SHANA.

Iran's English language Press TV reported in July that Iran aimed to boost that to $14 billion in the current year, ending March 19.

Taylor Swift wins 3 trophies at AMAs (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Taylor Swift was crowned artist of the year at the American Music Awards for a second time.

"This is so crazy!" the country superstar said after beat such contenders as Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to capture all three awards that she was nominated for at Sunday's ceremony, including artist of the year, the show's highest accolade that she previously claimed in 2009.

"I ended up writing the record by myself, so the fact that you would honor it this way, you have no idea what this means to me," said Swift after winning the trophy for favorite country album for "Speak Now." She was also awarded the prize for favorite country female artist.

Nicki Minaj, the pink-loving hip-hop diva, won two awards Sunday. She kicked off the 39th annual fan-favorite ceremony by sporting a pair of speakers on her much-talked about posterior and was later honored as favorite rap/hip-hop artist, besting a group that included mentor Lil Wayne, and won favorite rap/hip-hop album for "Pink Friday."

"There's so much love in this room," beamed the pink-haired Minaj.

Adele had been the night's leading nominee with four nods, but didn't have much of a presence at the show: She was absent from the ceremony because she is recovering from recent throat surgery. Adele tied Swift with three awards: favorite pop/rock female artist, adult contemporary artist and pop/rock album for "21."

Other winners included Maroon 5 as favorite pop-rock band/duo/group, Blake Shelton as favorite country male artist, Lady Antebellum as favorite country band/duo/group, Beyonce as favorite soul/R&B female artist, Rihanna for favorite soul/R&B album for "Loud" and Hot Chelle Rae as new artist of the year.

The ceremony inside the Nokia Theatre in an unusually rainy Los Angeles was drenched with 17 musical performances.

Justin Bieber got in the holiday spirit among a forest of neon lights with "Under the Mistletoe," and Kelly Clarkson, wearing a glittery red gown with her hair swept to the side, delivered a swinging rendition of her hit "Mr. Know It All" as back-up dancers dressed as 1930s-era photographers snapped the first-ever "American Idol" champion.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony shared custody of rapper Pitbull, who joined the former couple in a pair of separate performances. Lopez performed essentially a live version of a car commercial starring the "Idol" judge set to "Papi" ? with the car onstage ? before launching into her hit "On the Floor." Pitbull later returned to the stage and joined Anthony for "Rain Over Me."

Lopez expressed surprise when she won the favorite Latin music artist award.

"It's been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things," Lopez said of the last year.

Several artists delivered stripped-down performances: The Band Perry crooned an emotional "If I Die Young," a pink-haired Perry accompanied herself on guitar for "The One That Got Away" and a platinum-blonde Chris Brown simply sang "All Back" before being joined by a troop of helmet-clad back-up dancers for a flashy interpretation of "Say It With Me."

There were collaborations, too. Lopez joined a glowing-in-the-dark will.i.am for his new single "Hard." Christina Aguilera dueted with Maroon 5 on their "Moves Like Jagger," and then Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine teamed with Gym Class Heroes for their hit "Stereo Hearts." Bieber joined LMFAO in animal-print pants for the show's finale, which ended with everyone on stage ? including David Hasselhoff ? stripping down to smiley-face underwear.

Climate Panel Says To Prepare For Weird Weather

Seriously, here it is.

We engage the warp drive on the hemp production. We will suck every drop of carbon out of the atmosphere with it. Seriously, we have our number one oxygen scrubber growling like a weed. Once upon a time hemp grew like a weed. It was a damn weed and it would grow out of control. It's a pain in the ass if you want to grow corn crops. It makes great rope, in fact we enacted farmers to grow hemp for the war effort. Then we said...no..no more hemp.

It seems the cotton industry hated it. Here is a WEED that people go grab for fibers then that they could weave for themselves cloths and such. Coupled with corn farmers they lobbied it as an evil South of the border thing. And they did their best to eradicate it. It also turned out that the jazz and blues musicians were smoking it in all of those wrong kind of places to be seen at as a decent Christian sort. They were able to demonize it even more with their lobbyists. Preachers thundered on about it, etc.

But lets look at the facts of the matter. This plant has some amazing qualities to it aside from deer and rabbits wanting to eat it like it's a delicacy to them. The seeds of this are from what I understand can be distilled into a petroleum. Yes, I thought that as well. Petroleum? Seriously?

Petro is a hydrocarbon. Correct? What do we have floating about fucking up our atmosphere? Carbon? What thrives on this stuff in the air? Plants? How about a plant that will chew this stuff up and store that carbon in it's seeds as energy for it's babies. Imagine harvesting those seeds for that hydrocarbon? Then you have a very strong fiber resulting from the harvest as well. There are various grades of this fiber to work with. First being very long strong straight strands, then of course pulp fiber which can be pressed into parchment paper such as what the US Constitution is wrote on. Imagine the image quality of a high quality ink printer photo on a paper that ages like our Constitution. I can't get that at Office Max, can you? Let me know if you do, I want to print off pirate maps on some. Arrgh!

Here is the solution. You legalize and authorize hemp production in the US. It has to be licensed and monitored by the Ag department, not the DEA. Don't worry, stoners will not be growing weed in it or near it. They will cry if they do because it will be allowed to massively pollinate with Midwestern native hemp, which will drop the THC levels into the ditch weed category. Not to mention it will become seedy as FUCK. Everyone hates seedy pot. If you go to smoke pot and there is a seed in the pipe or the joint, BOOM! I have seen seeds blow up in a pot pipe someone was smoking and blow all the pot out of it and give them a face full of burning weed. It wasn't like a grenade, it just startles the living crap out of them when it happens. As a kid, I would get a seed, hollow out the tobacco of a cigarette, drop a big fat juicy seed in it, then repack it. We've all sabotaged a smoker like that before, right?

As I digress...

Those same "blow the fuck up in your face, so you better clean them out, NOOB" seeds are the ones that you run through a high pressure roller press and collect the oil. We also have to do this scientifically to appease the most staunch of skeptics. First, it has to be grown by using a strong composing, we can do this by processing a lot of our waste. We can let it process a trashy swampy sewer-ed field into clay, instead of devouring crop land. You just have to engineer the fields according with EPA standards for a land fill situation. It's called, get out the bulldozers time and do some serious earth moving.

We can do some genetic experimentation with this to tweak it to grow insanely big and fast. Plants are amazingly fun to mess with on a genetic level, we have been doing it for quite a time now. We used to call it "breeding". There are an amazing variety of this plant that we can cross breed with. Take for example there is a breed of it in italy that grows 6 inches I day, I would say couple that with so

Spain votes for change to combat crisis (Reuters)

MADRID (Reuters) ? Spaniards reeling from an economic crisis voted on Sunday in an election expected to throw out the ruling Socialists and bring in a center-right party which promises only harsher austerity measures.

A grim mood dominated as people went to the polls against a background of soaring unemployment, cuts in public spending and a debt crisis that has put Spain in the front line of the euro zone's fight for survival.

"Being a civil servant I'm not optimistic," said Jose Vasquez, 45, who was among the early voters in the capital Madrid.

"We can choose the sauce they will cook us in, but we're still going to be cooked."

Pre-election opinion polls gave the conservative People's Party (PP), led by Mariano Rajoy, an unassailable lead over the Socialists, who have led Spain from boom to bust in seven years.

Voters are angry with the Socialists for failing to act swiftly to prevent the slide in the euro zone's fourth-largest economy and then for belatedly bringing in austerity measures that have slashed wages, benefits and jobs.

Yet people now seem resigned to further cuts, including in health and education, in the midst of a European debt crisis that has toppled the governments of Ireland, Portugal, Greece and Italy and pushed Spain's borrowing costs to critical levels.

Spain's bleak economic outlook hung over the election campaign. One in five Spanish workers are without a job and its economy is threatening to slip into recession next year for the second time in three years.

"Something's got to change here in Spain, with 5 million people on the dole, this can't go on. People like us just want to work." Juan Antonio Fernandez, 60, an unemployed construction worker said as he voted in rain-swept Madrid.

Rajoy, who led his party in two previous failed parliamentary election campaigns, is likely to win an absolute majority giving him a clear mandate to enforce the deep and painful cuts seen as necessary to balance Spain's books.

"I'm prepared to do what Spaniards want," Rajoy said after he voted in the wealthy Madrid neighborhood of Aravaca.

The 56-year-old will not be sworn in until December but he is likely to swiftly lay out his plans during the government handover to reassure fraught markets.

Underlining the fragile situation, Spain's borrowing costs hit euro-era highs during the election campaign, almost reaching the 7 percent level at which other euro zone nations like Ireland and Greece sought international bail-outs. Growth has stalled.

"If we had not had an election in Spain, the markets would have changed the government as they did in Greece and Italy," said voter Antonio Diaz, 38, a local government administrator.

"The first problems the new government is going to confront are unemployment and the markets -- who are what governs us. It's going to be very complicated to solve Spain's problems."

CHEAP CREDIT THEN CRASH

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero decided against running for a third term as his approval ratings sank. The Socialists then chose veteran politician Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba as their leader for the campaign, but he struggled to differentiate himself from Zapatero.

The left-wing party took power in a 2004 election held three days after an Islamist attack on Madrid commuter trains which killed 191 people. Conservative Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar wrongly blamed blamed Basque separatist group ETA, prompting a voter backlash. Rajoy was the unsuccessful PP candidate.

Sunday's election took place on the 36th anniversary of the death of dictator General Francisco Franco, who had ruled Spain since the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War.

Following the restoration of democracy, Spain joined the European Union in 1986 and the euro in 1999, enjoying years of prosperity and a real estate boom driven by cheap credit.

When the property market crashed in 2007 the government, companies and consumers all found themselves over their heads in debt.

"The best social policy is to create jobs," said voter Luis Escobar, a 50-year-old hotel worker."

"The guys in power haven't done anything so if you want things to change you have to do something," he said, adding that he would vote for the People's Party.

The crisis has hit some regions, notably southern Andalucia, heartland of Spain's tourist industry, worse than others.

In the Basque Country, people were voting for the first time in years without the threat of violence, after ETA announced last month that it was giving up its armed struggle.

The traditionally prosperous northeastern region has been relatively unscathed by the economic storm and most voters were expected to back pro-independence parties.

"For the time being I've got a pretty good pension and the crisis hasn't affected me yet. Of course it will reach me," said 81-year-old Laureano Agirremota in the industrial city of Bilbao. "I've always voted the same, for the Basque Nationalist Party."

By mid-afternoon, on a day when rain swept the country, turn-out among Spain's 36 million potential voters was 59 percent, officials said.

Congress about to kill high-speed train program (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress is on the verge of killing funding for President Barack Obama's signature high-speed rail program, but it may have some life in it still.

Republican lawmakers are claiming credit for killing the program. But billions of dollars still in the pipeline will ensure work will continue on some projects. And it's still possible money from another transportation grant program can be steered to high-speed trains.

Obama had requested $8 billion in fiscal 2012 for the program, and $53 billion over six years. House and Senate negotiators agreed to a measure this week that eliminates any funding specifically for high-speed trains. Final passage of the bill, which funds day-to-day operations at the Transportation Department and several other agencies in fiscal 2012, is expected Thursday in the House and Friday in the Senate.

Republicans have made it clear since taking control of the House last year that they intended to eliminate the program, which they say is too costly.

The bill marks "an end to the president's misguided high-speed rail program, but it is not the end of American high-speed rail," said Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's railroad subcommittee.

Shuster and the Transportation Committee's chairman, Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., say the future of high-speed rail in the U.S. is in the Northeast rail corridor that connects Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, rather than the national network of trains envisioned by Obama.

"We are being given a chance to refocus and reform the high-speed rail program," Shuster said.

But Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., an Obama ally and high-speed rail supporter, said he is confident some money will be found to keep Obama's train program going through the Transportation Department's TIGER program, which makes grants to projects that achieve critical national objectives.

The 2012 spending bill includes $500 million for the TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program. High-speed trains would have to compete with highway, transit, port and freight rail projects for money.

Since Obama took office in 2009, his administration has steered $10.1 billion to high-speed rail projects around the country. Some of the money is only now being used because of the time it takes to start up a major grant program and because the program suffered setbacks when several GOP governors canceled projects in their states that had been awarded funds.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Wednesday that he expects more than $1 billion in high-speed rail construction-related activity across the country next year.

The biggest project is in California, where the state is proposing Europe-style bullet trains traveling up to 220 mph between San Francisco and Anaheim. Planners hope to start construction of the first phase, from Fresno to Bakersfield, next year and complete it by 2017.

The project has been awarded $3.9 billion in federal aid so far. California voters also authorized $9 billion in bonds for high-speed trains in 2008. But at that time the project was forecast to cost $45 billion and be completed by 2020.

A new estimate and schedule released this month pegged the cost at just under $100 billion and pushed completion to 2034. One reason for the cost increase is that it takes into account inflation over that period. But the price tag has strengthened the position of the project's opponents.

"What's frustrating about Congress passing no new funding this year is that it adds uncertainty to federal funding," said Petra Todorovich, director of America 2050, an urban planning and infrastructure advocacy group. "That isn't helpful to projects like California that rely on a certain amount of federal funding."

The first phase of the California project is already funded.

"Some time in the next few years they will need Congress to vote for more money for rail, but it doesn't kill the project that Congress zeroed out funding this year," Todorovich said.

Mort Downey, the No. 2 Transportation Department official under President Bill Clinton and a former Obama campaign adviser, said Obama's high-speed rail plans depend on the California project.

"If California continues to go forward, we're still on life support," Downey said.

Anthony Perl, chairman of the Transportation Research Board's rail group, said that even if Obama's program collapses, it's "still highly likely" a national high-speed rail network will be built in coming decades, partly because the price of oil is expected to continue to increase.

"There is nothing that uses less oil moving people than trains," Perl said. "Cheap oil equals more cars and planes; expensive oil equals trains."

California transportation officials estimate that if high-speed train service doesn't go forward, the state will need to spend $171 billion to construct more than 2,300 miles of freeways, four more airport runways and 115 additional airline gates to accommodate the travel demands of the state's population of 54 million people by 2050.

Germany to create far right extremists' register (AP)

BERLIN ? Germany will create a national database as a clearing-house for information on far-right extremists amid mounting criticism because its security agencies failed to detect a deadly neo-Nazi terror group for years.

Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said Wednesday the new database to be used by all federal and state-level intelligence and police agencies will be modeled on a similar registry for Islamic extremists created in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We want to also use this idea, that has been very successful over the past 10 years to foil Islamist terror attacks, against domestic terrorist structures," Friedrich told reporters.

The minister also announced that the government scheduled talks for Friday with the country's 16 state interior and justice ministers on how to "improve cooperation in the future."

Germany has a federal domestic intelligence agency, but all states also have their own police and domestic intelligence agency ? resulting in a lack of coordination that critics say helped the neo-Nazis to remain undetected between 1998 and last week.

The group is suspected of murdering eight Turks, a Greek and a policewoman over the past decade.

The investigation into the activities of the National Socialist Underground has spiraled into a nationwide search of previously unsolved crimes, including suspected terror attacks in Cologne and Duesseldorf from 2000 to 2004 that are now linked to the group. The attacks injured more than 30 people, most of them foreigners.

Two people have been arrested, a suspected co-founder of the group and an alleged supporter. Two other suspected founding members died last week in an apparent suicide, but authorities believe the group relied on a much larger network of "helpers" across the nation.

The crimes have caused an outcry and caused soul-searching across the country. Chancellor Angela Merkel called them "a shame for Germany" over the weekend.

President Christian Wulff announced Wednesday that he will invite the victims' relatives and government representatives to meet at his Berlin office in a private ceremony.

German police referred to the series of the nine murders of foreign businessmen ? including a flower wholesaler, a tailor and kebab stall owners ? as "kebab killings," suspecting organized crime behind it but not politically motivated violence.

The head of state therefore raised the question of what lessons German authorities must learn from that failure.

"Did we have to suspect a far right extremist background and are the protagonists of those far right circles under sufficient surveillance?" Wulff said.

"Did we possibly let prejudices guide ourselves?" he added in a speech addressing the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

APNewsBreak: Demi Moore to divorce Ashton Kutcher (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Demi Moore is ending her marriage to fellow actor Ashton Kutcher, she told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Moore, 49, and Kutcher, 33, were wed in September 2005.

The couple's relationship became tabloid fodder in recent months as rumors swirled about Kutcher's alleged infidelity.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation," she said in her statement to the AP.

The pair frequently used Twitter to communicate with each other as millions of fans followed along.

"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," Kutcher tweeted Thursday. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."

Moore said in 2007 that her relationship with the star of "That `70s Show" and "Punk'd" ? who is 15 years younger than Moore ? "caught us both by surprise."

"If somebody would have said, `OK, here is the prediction: You're going to meet a man 25 years old and he's going to see being with you and having your three kids as a bonus,' I would have said, `Keep dreaming,'" Moore said in a 2007 interview with Vanity Fair. "I think it caught us both by surprise, and particularly him."

Kutcher became a stepfather to Moore's three daughters ? Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle ? from her 13-year marriage to actor Bruce Willis. Moore and Willis divorced in 2000 but remained friendly. Moore and Kutcher were photographed socializing with Willis, and the couple attended Willis' wedding to model-actress Emma Heming in 2009.

Moore and Kutcher created the DNA Foundation, also known as the Demi and Ashton Foundation, in 2010 to combat the organized sexual exploitation of girls around the globe. They later lent their support to the United Nations' efforts to fight human trafficking, a scourge the international organization estimates affects about 2.5 million people worldwide.

Moore can be seen on screen in the recent films "Margin Call" and "Another Happy Day." Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on TV's "Two and a Half Men" as is part of the ensemble film "New Year's Eve," set for release next month.

Kutcher's publicist did not immediately respond to an e-mail and phone call seeking comment. No divorce papers had been filed in Los Angeles Superior Court as of Thursday afternoon.

Chinese spacecraft dock in orbit for second time (AP)

BEIJING ? Two unmanned Chinese spacecraft successfully docked together for a second time Monday, state-run media reported, in China's latest step toward placing its own space station in orbit.

The Shenzhou 8 craft re-docked with the Tiangong 1 module that will form part of a future space lab, and the two were jointly orbiting Earth, Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the mission's control center.

About half an hour before the Monday evening docking, Shenzhou 8 had successfully disengaged from the module after a 12-day flight together, Xinhua said.

In a commentary, Xinhua said the Shenzhou 8 mission had "laid a solid steppingstone for deep space exploration."

"The autonomous docking know-how now enables China to build space stations, resupply them, transfer astronauts and rescue them," it said.

One expert said not having to have crews on board when docking spacecraft was a big step toward building a space station and developing a human spaceflight program.

"They have plans to build a space station, and of course that's not possible without perfecting docking between two different craft, and the fact that they have perfected automated docking is a big step forward. The Americans didn't do it for decades after they launched their space program," said Peter Bond, consultant editor for Jane's Space Systems and Industry.

Shenzhou 8 was launched Nov. 1 and first docked with the already orbiting Tiangong 1 on Nov. 3. China's first space docking took place in an orbit 213 miles (343 kilometers) above Earth, Xinhua said. The craft is due to return to Earth on Thursday.

The docking mechanism, composed of 10,000 parts, and the more than 600 instruments aboard Shenzhou 8 were all developed and made in China, Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, was quoted as saying.

China will conduct two more space docking missions next year, and plans to establish its own space lab around 2016 and a manned space station around 2020, Wu said.

At about 60 tons when completed, the Chinese station will be considerably smaller than the 16-nation International Space Station, which is expected to continue operating through 2028.

China launched its own space station program after being rebuffed in its attempts to join the ISS, largely on objections from the United States. The U.S. is wary of the Chinese program's military links and the sharing of technology with its chief economic and political rival.

Xinhua said Monday that "tiny adjustments" could make the Chinese docking mechanism compatible with the ports of the ISS and U.S. space shuttles as it allows any two similarly equipped spacecraft to dock with each other.

It also said that China allowed Germany to conduct biological experiments in a docking vehicle ? the first instance of international cooperation since the beginning of China's manned space program.

Bond said Europe seems "more open" to collaborating with China in space and "I think that's to their mutual benefit."

Magic trick reveals unconscious knowledge

People 'know' what they don't believe they've seen, study shows

Web edition : 3:51 pm

WASHINGTON ? Magic tricks prey on people?s subpar powers of perception, but new work finds that the brain has tricks of its own up its sleeve: People notice more than they think.

In the research, presented November 12 at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, Luis Martinez of CSIC- Miguel Hernandez University in Spain and colleagues amazingly ?read minds? with the Princess Card Trick, invented by magician Henry Hardin in 1905. Volunteers mentally chose a playing card from a panel of six cards, which then disappeared. When a second group of cards appeared, the researchers had miraculously figured out which card a person had in mind and removed it. Few people caught the trick: All the cards in the second set were different, not just the card people had chosen.

A few seconds after viewing the two panels of cards, participants were asked which of two new cards was present in the first panel. None of the volunteers could consciously recall which card was present. Despite these avowals of ignorance, when forced to choose, people got the right answer about 80 percent of the time. ?People say they don?t know, but they do,? Martinez said. ?The information is still there, and we can use it unconsciously if we are forced to.?

To see whether this unconscious knowledge works for objects other than cards, Martinez and his colleagues performed a similar experiment with pictures of men?s faces. A similar kind of visual short-term memory helped people choose which face they had seen before, even when volunteers didn?t perceive that they knew the correct answer.

These unconscious, short-term memories are finicky, Martinez and his colleagues found. If the researchers talked to the volunteers while performing the trick, the ability to identify the card that had been present worsened. (Magicians may deploy a steady stream of patter for this very reason.) And if the researchers revealed the secret of the trick, participants performed no better than chance at identifying the card.

Evidence of ancient lake in California's Eel River emerges

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2011) ? A catastrophic landslide 22,500 years ago dammed the upper reaches of northern California's Eel River, forming a 30-mile-long lake, which has since disappeared, and leaving a living legacy found today in the genes of the region's steelhead trout, report scientists at two West Coast universities.

Using remote-sensing technology known as airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and hand-held global-positioning-systems (GPS) units, a three-member research team found evidence for a late Pleistocene, landslide-dammed lake along the river, about 60 miles southeast of Eureka.

The river today is 200 miles long, carved into the ground from high in the California Coast Ranges to its mouth in the Pacific Ocean in Humboldt County.

The evidence for the ancient landslide, which, scientists say, blocked the river with a 400-foot wall of loose rock and debris, is detailed this week in a paper appearing online ahead of print in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The National Science Foundation-funded study provides a rare glimpse into the geological history of this rapidly evolving mountainous region.

It helps to explain emerging evidence from other studies that show a dramatic decrease in the amount of sediment deposited from the river in the ocean just off shore at about the same time period, says lead author Benjamin H. Mackey, who began the research while pursuing a doctorate earned in 2009 from the University of Oregon. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology.

"Perhaps of most interest, the presence of this landslide dam also provides an explanation for the results of previous research on the genetics of steelhead trout in the Eel River," Mackey said, referring to a 1999 study by U.S. Forest Service researchers J.L. Nielson and M.C. Fountain. In their study, published in the journal Ecology of Freshwater Fish, they found a striking relationship in two types of ocean-going steelhead in the river -- a genetic similarity not seen among summer-run and winter-run steelhead in other nearby rivers.

An interbreeding of the two fish, in a process known as genetic introgression, may have occurred among the fish brought together while the river was dammed, Mackey said. "The dam likely would have been impassable to the fish migrating upstream, meaning both ecotypes would have been forced to spawn and inadvertently breed downstream of the dam. This period of gene flow between the two types of steelhead can explain the genetic similarity observed today."

Once the dam burst, the fish would have reoccupied their preferred spawning grounds and resumed different genetic trajectories, he added.

"The damming of the river was a dramatic, punctuated affair that greatly altered the landscape," said co-author Joshua J. Roering, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Oregon. "Although current physical evidence for the landslide dam and paleo-lake is subtle, its effects are recorded in the Pacific Ocean and persist in the genetic make-up of today's Eel River steelhead. It's rare for scientists to be able to connect the dots between such diverse and widely-felt phenomena."

The lake's surface formed by the landslide, researchers theorize, covered about 12 square miles. After the damn was breached, the flow of water would have generated one of North America's largest landslide-dam outburst floods. Landslide activity and erosion have erased much of the evidence for the now-gone lake. Without the acquisition of LiDAR mapping, the lake's existence may have never been discovered, researchers say.

The area affected by the landslide-caused dam accounts for about 58 percent of the modern Eel River watershed. Based on today's general erosion rates, researchers theorize the lake could have been filled in with sediment within about 600 years.

"The presence of a dam of this size was highly unexpected in the Eel River environment given the abundance of easily eroded sandstone and mudstone, which are generally not considered strong enough to form long-lived dams," Mackey said.

He and his colleagues were drawn to the Eel River -- among the most-studied erosion systems in the world -- to study large, slow-moving landslides. "While analyzing the elevation of terraces along the river, we discovered they clustered at a common elevation rather than decrease in elevation downstream, paralleling the river profile, as would be expected for river terraces. This was the first sign of something unusual, and it clued us into the possibility of an ancient lake."

The third co-author on the paper was Michael P. Lamb, professor of geological and planetary sciences at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping provided LiDAR data used in the project. Additional funding support came from the Keck Institute for Space Studies.

New Kyrgyz president to take office in December (AP)

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan ? Kyrgyzstan says president-elect Almazbek Atambayev will take office on Dec. 1 in a ceremony that will mark the first ever peaceful handover of power in the former Soviet republic's two decades of independence.

The announcement Tuesday sets the stage for an event authorities hope will spell the end of political turbulence that has scourged the Central Asian nation over the past year following the overthrow in April 2010 of former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

Kyrgyzstan's first two presidents were overthrown in public uprisings. Current president Roza Otunbayeva, who wrested power from Bakiyev, earned international plaudits for agreeing to relinquish power.

Election officials released official results of the October vote over the weekend, which showed Atambayev claiming 62.5 percent of the vote.

Mexico crash co-pilot said craft was faulty: report (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? The co-pilot of a helicopter that crashed outside Mexico City, killing Interior Minister Francisco Blake and seven others, had told his brother the aircraft was faulty, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

"My brother told me on Wednesday. That helicopter is not OK and it was failing on the way back from Colima," Hiram Fernando Escobar told El Universal newspaper of his conversation with brother Pedro Ramon Escobar, who died in the crash on Friday.

But officials charged with investigating the accident repeated in a news conference on Sunday that the craft was fit to fly, sticking with their previous explanation that bad weather was a key factor in the crash.

Mexico's Communications and Transportation Minister Dionisio Perez-Jacome said that the helicopter, made in 1984, had been serviced between November 4-6, and had flown on November 9 and 10 without reports of problems.

Samples taken from the helicopter's wreckage and other evidence are consistent with the hypothesis that it crashed into a hillside after running into thick fog or cloud, Perez-Jacome said.

Investigators were not asked directly about the comments by the co-pilot's brother, but they said they did not believe there was engine failure.

The helicopter was in radar contact up to the seconds before the crash and traveling at a constant speed and direction.

"That diminishes those hypotheses that there were control or navigation problems and, in an important way, strengthens the hypothesis that the impact happened in normal flight conditions and on a straight level," said Gilberto Lopez, chief executive of Mexico's Airports and Auxiliary Services, an independent government agency.

Blake, 45, was the second interior minister under President Felipe Calderon to be killed in an air crash, which prompted speculation on Twitter about the cause of his death. All aboard were killed.

As interior minister, Blake was responsible for helping Calderon in the country's fight against powerful drug cartels.

He was flying to Cuernavaca about 60 miles south of Mexico City when his helicopter encountered low-lying clouds, prompting the pilot to divert from the planned route only to get lost in fog, investigators have said.

Initial checks of the helicopter showed no damage from an explosion or fire, Perez-Jacome said on Sunday. A more exhaustive investigation is under way.

Separately, a poll published by Milenio newspaper on Sunday showed 36 percent of people surveyed in Michoacan state -- where there are state elections on Sunday -- believe the helicopter crashed as a result of an attack, while 43 percent believe it was an accident.

Thais celebrate water festival despite floods (AP)

BANGKOK ? Sahattaya Vitayakaseat placed a tiny crown-shaped boat made from curled banana leaves and marigold flowers into the murky brown water and let it drift toward a park bench submerged by Bangkok's surging Chao Phraya river.

She then closed her eyes and prayed, silently begging forgiveness from Thailand's goddess of water ? who some believe is responsible for a three-month wave of cataclysmic flooding that has killed more than 500 people.

"I hadn't planned to come out tonight because there's been so much loss and so much grief," Sahattaya, 45, said Thursday as the Southeast Asian kingdom celebrated Loy Krathong, a full-moon festival held every year when the rainy season comes to an end. "But this is a chance to let our misery float away."

Thais believe the candlelit boats launched during the Loy Krathong holiday can carry misfortune away with them, allowing life to begin anew. But this year the tradition, begun hundreds of years ago to pay tribute to water itself, has taken on a profound new irony.

Floodwaters born from months of intense monsoon rains have swept the country, engulfing whole cities in one of the worst natural disasters in modern Thai history. In the last few weeks, areas of outer Bangkok have also been submerged, forcing residents to flee neighborhoods where the best way to get around now is on boats made from anything that can float ? plastic foam, empty water bottles, bamboo poles.

The threat is not yet over, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand responded by canceling all official Loy Krathong celebrations in the capital this year.

The Chao Phraya river ? normally filled with tens of thousands of floating lanterns during the holiday ? was dark and mostly empty Thursday night.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority had urged people not to float krathongs on the river or in any flooded zones. Officials were worried they could trigger fires in abandoned homes or clog drains and canals critical to helping ease the massive pools of runoff bearing down on the metropolis of 9 million people.

Still, hoards of smiling Thais came out to celebrate, packing parks across Bangkok where festive vendors sold boiling noodles, balloons and krathongs made of ice cream cones. One hint that things were different this time: donation boxes set up to help flood victims.

At the riverside Santi Chai Prakan Park, teenagers set off firecrackers. A dozen candlelit paper lanterns floated into the night sky above a floodlit fort.

Revelers set loose hundreds of krathongs on the water, in a spot where the overflowing river had submerged a set of park steps. The krathongs were kept from the river, contained in a barricaded zone beside it.

"She's cruel," Vilasini Rienpracha said with a lighthearted laugh, referring to the Thai water deity called Phra Mae Khongkha. "She wanted to come into our streets and to see what the city is like. But we've had enough, it's time for her to go."

Loy Krathong has its roots in an era when most Thais lived in stilt houses made of wood, dependent on rivers and rain-fed agricultural land for their sustenance and survival.

That life is being erased by modern development, which critics say has exacerbated the current crisis. Over the last few decades, canals that once allowed annual floodwaters to pass through the capital unimpeded have been paved over to make room for roads, highways, shopping malls and housing estates.

Sahattaya said Thais have treated the nation's rivers poorly, polluting them with garbage, and exacerbated annual floods with deforestation and poor urban planning.

"If we as humans don't change our behavior, more catastrophes will come," she said. "It's time to start doing something positive instead of destroying the environment. We've been greedy. We've treated Mother Nature poorly. And now she's come back to hurt us."
