RIP: Evelyn H. Lauder, Advocate for Breast Cancer Awareness ...

RIP: Evelyn H. Lauder, an Est?e Lauder executive and a creator of the Pink Ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness, passed away yesterday in her home in New York City.

Born Evelyn Hausner in Vienna, Austria, she fled Nazi-occupied Europe with her parents and came to New York in 1938. She eventually married Leonard A. Lauder, the son of Est?e Lauder. Evelyn Lauder worked in the family business, most recently holding the title of senior corporate vice-president.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, she created the Pink Ribbon campaign, quickly becoming an advocate for women?s health, yet rarely speaking out about her own condition.

In 1993 she created the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which has since raised over $350 million and helped establish the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Cancer Center at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

A spokeswoman for the Est?e Lauder Companies said the cause of death was non-genetic ovarian cancer. She was 75.
