Microsoft is licensing technology to two Google Android device makers
Microsoft has entered into a licensing agreement with Aluratek and with Coby Electronics Corp. for patents used by Google?s Android smartphone operating system and Chrome browser, which the device-makers use on their mobile gadgets.
The company did not release the details of the agreements, but the corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for Microsoft?s Intellectual Property Group said in press releases that Microsoft is ?proud of the continued success of our licensing program in resolving IP (intellectual property) issues surrounding Android and Chrome.?
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties from Aluratek and from Coby Electronics for use of its patents.
Microsoft and Samsung, which was recently acquired by Google, have been fighting over standard-essential patents in Washington state federal courts, the International Trade Commission and in German patent courts. A jury trial has been set for November that will determine how much Microsoft will pay to license the video compression and WiFi patents from Google/Samsung.
