W&M lacrosse coach steps down after two seasons

WILLIAMSBURG? ? The William and Mary athletics department announced the resignation of head lacrosse coach Brooke Ireland Wednesday afternoon.

"The decision to step away at this time does not come easily,? Ireland said in a press release. ?I have a great passion for this sport and, especially, this group of Tribe student-athletes, but I know the moment has come where I can no longer divide time between coaching and my family at home. I have truly enjoyed the experience at William and Mary and will always hold a special place in my heart for the young women whom I've had the pleasure to coach."

?A number of Tribe standouts achieved tremendous success individually under Ireland?s tutelage, as seven players combined to earn nine all-conference honors during the past two seasons. Additionally, 20 members of the 2012 team garnered the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner?s Academic Award.

?"Brooke Ireland provided leadership and stability to our lacrosse program, and we are grateful for her contributions over the last two seasons,? stated William and Mary Athletics Director Terry Driscoll in the release. ?Her dedication and professionalism guided the program through a difficult time of transition and provided a sound foundation on which a bright future can be built. While we will miss her leadership, I wish the very best for Brooke and her family in the future."

In two seasons leading the Tribe, Ireland posted a 9-24 record overall and a 4-10 mark in conference play. Nine of the losses came against teams ranked among the nation?s top 10 and eight were by a margin of two goals or less.

A national search for Ireland?s replacement will begin immediately.
