NASUWT joins Unite in rejecting the Government's pensions reform deal

The move strikes a blow to ministers' hopes of being able to resolve its dispute with the unions regarding public sector pension reform.

NASUWT representatives accused the Department for Education of a "completely unsatisfactory" process for trying to secure a deal.

They say they were "pressurised and threatened" to sign up to a document without a final draft being available, which would have been "completely irresponsible".

General secretary Chris Keates said: "Put bluntly, the NASUWT national executive has recognised that the process the DfE used to seek to reach agreement by its imposed deadline of December 20 was a debacle.

"Valuable time was wasted by the DfE.

"It failed to provide the necessary information on which meaningful discussions could take place, chopped and changed its mind on the issues which were up for discussion, and presented some potential changes which did not have Treasury approval," she said.

The announcement comes just a day after Unite's health executive rejected the Government's proposed deal for health staff.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said the decision was "disappointing" because the scheme on offer is a "good deal".

Also, the British Medical Association has decided to survey 130,000 doctors and students on their views of ministers' final offer which could lead to the organisation balloting on industrial action for the first time in 30 years.

Last year, thousands of staff took part in a nationwide strike to protest against the reforms, which unions say will mean employees must work longer and pay higher contributions.
